Founded in 1867 this school was built to educate former slaves. It was funded by New York educator and philanthropist, Emily Howard. The one room schoolhouse is 26 x 40 feet and was built by local black carpenters and builders. It was known as a graded school because it only educated grades 1 through 7.
Originally it was called the Howland Chapel because on Sundays it also served as a place of worship (for what would become the First Baptist Church congregation) until 1920. The school closed its doors in 1958 after being a schoohouse for almost 100 years. It is little altered from the Reconstruction era, but got new siding and minor restoration in 1991. This is the oldest school in Northumberland County, Virginia. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Govan is a town located in Lincoln County, Washington state, USA - a bit west of Wilbur. The current population is 3. It was a farming/ranching community with a 100+ population in the early 1900’s. The town withered as it was bypassed by Route 2 and then suffered a fire in the 1940’s. Ghost stories and unexplained murders are part of the history of Govan.
This school was built in 1905. Apparently the steeple crumbled not too long ago.

This was not one of the Freedom Schools of the 1960s. Rather, this building was a hotel and cafe, and the proprietor home-schooled her children, as well as some other local children, here. Supposedly the school operated until 2002.

The Granite School is open to the public, who has, for the most part, not abused it. At the very least, it's still standing and most of the windows are not broken.
This is a rare RB67 shot that was done on the tripod. Usually I handhold everything, but it was too dark for such shenanigans.

The school is located at the base of Peach Mountain on the Appalachian Plateau in Mineral Springs. This remote community once had a huge spa and hotel, with a connecting rail line. Thousands came to seek a cure from the mineral waters for a variety of ailments.
Bell tower of a no longer used early 1900’s school house in Gilson Illinois. This large bell was sufficient to be heard throughout the town.
This guy apparently has found a home here and is not very skittish. He hung around for quite some time before flying into the bushes.

Lincoln's New Salem State Historical Site
"Mentor Graham moved to this area in 1826 and built a brick house on his farm one mile west of here. He first taught school in a log church on the Felix Green farm. After New Salem was laid out in 1828, the growing community erected a round-log schoolhouse. Graham moved his school to the building. He ran a subscription school, charging from 30 cents to 85 cents per month depending on the age of the child. Commonly called a "blab" school, the students learned by repeating their lessons out loud over and over."
