Wetenschappelijke naam: Mya arenaria
Door de storm van de afgelopen dagen zag ik hele vreemde schelpen liggen op het Kijkduinse strand. Het bleken strandgapers te zijn. Ik had ze nog nooit van mijn leven gezien.
Ze schijnen normaal veel voor te komen in de Waddenzee en op sommige plekken in Zeeland. Op de Waddeneilanden noemen ze dit "Piemelschelpen"

Na de storm van eergisteren even naar het strand van Kijkduin geweest om te kijken hoe het strand er bij lig.
Op bepaalde plekken veel zeesterren, scheermessen en strandgapers (apiemelschelpen).
Het water is erg hoog geweest maar de duinen zijn niet aangevreten.
Met al dat lekkers voor de Meeuwen waren die daarom ook in grote getallen aanwezig.

Description:
The shells are long, narrow, and parallel-sided. This shape resembles a closed, old-fashioned straight razor (a cut-throat razor), or a closed jackknife (pocket knife) and sometimes these clams are known as razor shells or jackknives. The shells in these species are fragile and can easily be damaged when digging for these clams.
Ecology:
Ensis species live in clean sand on exposed beaches. They are capable of digging very rapidly; see the description under the Atlantic jackknife clam. Some clammers catch jackknives by pouring salt on the characteristic keyhole-shaped breathing holes. The clam then tries to escape the salt by coming up out of its hole, and at this point it is possible to gently grab the shell and pull it out of the ground.
Ensis is een geslacht van middelgrote in zee levende schelpdieren, ook wel aangeduid met de naam "scheermes". De typesoort van dit geslacht is Ensis magnus Schumacher 1817 (jonger synoniem: Ensis arcuatus (Jeffreys, 1865)). In de levende fauna zijn wereldwijd 11 à 12 soorten bekend waarvan er vijf in de Noordzee leven (waaronder de exoot Ensis directus). De oudste Ensis-soorten zijn uit het Onder Mioceen van Europa bekend en daar lijkt het geslacht ook tegenwoordig nog zijn zwaartepunt te hebben.[1]
Ensis-soorten staan erom bekend dat zij moeilijk te determineren zijn. Zeker bij fossielen waarbij vaak alleen fragmenten gevonden worden, is determinatie tot op soortniveau meestal niet mogelijk. Door de grote variabiliteit in de vorm van de schelp zijn in het verleden vrij veel soorten beschreven waarvan nu wordt aangenomen dat zij binnen de variabiliteit van al eerder beschreven soorten vallen[2]. De namen van die nieuwere soorten vallen dan ook in de jongere synonymie van die eerder beschreven soorten.

The Kampfe brothers, who patented the first safety razor in the US, formed a manufacturing company in 1875. They make the "Star" razor. It was the first safety razor made in the United States. The Star Razor's revolutionary design won national and international awards for design and craftsmanship. In 1898, after working for the Kampfe Brothers for 23 years, an employee, Jerry Reichard, left to form the Gem Cutlery company, later renamed the Gem Safety Razor Company. Its first product, the Gem Safety Razor, borrowed heavily from the Star Razor in design but soon outpaced the Star and became one of the world's most famous razor and blades ever made. Reichard, the founder of Gem -- left again to form the Yankee company, which was soon renamed the Ever-Ready Company. Ever-Ready and Gem quickly re-merged as the American Safety Razor Company, in 1906. In 1919, they absorbed the Star brand as well. The company purchased the PAL blade company in 1953. Philip Morris purchased the company in 1960. Philip Morris purchased Burma-Vita company (makers of Burma-Shave) in 1968. ASR bought the Burma-Shave brand from Philip Morris in 1979, after a management buyout of ASR from Philip Morris in 1976
