Castle Schaloen is located near the city Valkenburg (Limburg, south of Holland). The castle is now owned and habitated by the family Bot and the extra buildings are used as hotel and cafetaria.
El castillo Schaloen se encuentra cerca de la ciudad Valkenburg en la provincia Limburg (sur de Holanda).
Oud-Valkenburg ligt tussen Valkenburg en Schin op Geul, dat wordt omringd door de natuur. de twee kastelen Genhoes en Schaloen.
Oud-Valkenburg met zijn planten die typerend zijn voor de Zuid-Limburgse flora.
Kasteel Genhoes is de oudste bezitting van Natuurmonumenten in Zuid-Limburg. In 1955 kocht de vereniging het kasteel en de omringende landerijen. Het oorspronkelijke kasteel stamt uit de 11de eeuw en was ooit het stamkasteel van de heren van Valkenburg. De naam Genhoes betekent Hét Huis, daarbij een gesloten hoeve, dateren uit de 17e en 18e eeuw.

Ook bij dit gebouw hoort een hoeve. Verder liggen er bij het kasteel een watermolen en de bekende Kasteeltuin.

When my sister and I where still young our parents who sadly died far to early took us during summer holidays to one of the most beautiful regions of Europe. South Limburg is located in the deep south of The Netherlands, flanked by Belgium and Germany. Here you find hilly landscapes, beautiful meadows, picturesque villages, mines, caves, many attractions and also this great castle. I took this photo in 2020. It was for sale shortly afterwards. In fact, it is a good buy for anyone who has some savings left. 5 months ago you could buy the beautiful castle built on a small island and with a large castle garden for only 3,995,000!

Wandeling 1105 OUD-VALKENBURG - WIJLRE 13,3 km.
Start in Wijlre.
Tijdens deze heuvelachtige wandeling wandelt u eerst langs het mooie kasteel Schaloen en dan volgt u een mooi pad langs de meanderende Geul naar Schin op Geul. Dan loopt u een mooie stuk door het prachtige Geuldal en via mooi graspad langs de toeristische spoorlijn komt u in Wijlre waar u bij Brasserie Amuseer komt, een mooie pauzeplek met terras. Dan loopt u o. a. langs kasteel Wijlre naar de buurtschap Beertsenhoven. Via mooie stijgende holle veldweg komt u boven op het Plateau van Margraten. Via leuk bos en trappenpad komt u in het mooie rustige Gerendal. Vervolgens loopt u via mooi pad door het Gerendal terug naar Het Valkennest met mooi gelegen terras. U kunt ook starten in Wijlre bij Brasserie Amuseer (punt 4) en dan pauzeren (koffie en vlaai) bij Het Valkennest (geen restaurant).
Kasteel Schaloen is een kasteel in Oud-Valkenburg in de Zuid-Limburgse gemeente
Valkenburg aan de Geul. Het kasteel is een rijksmonument. Het maakt samen met de Johannes de Doperkerk en Genhoes deel uit van het rijksbeschermd gezicht Oud Valkenburg. Het is tevens onderdeel van het Buitengoed Geul.
Kasteel Schaloen is gebouwd in de 12de eeuw. Het is gebruikt als verdedigingsburcht en als woning.
De naam Schaloen is afkomstig van de kasteelheer Reinier IV van Hulsberg van Schaloen, eigenaar van het kasteel tussen 1442 en 1457.
In de Tachtigjarige oorlog werd het kasteel vrijwel geheel verwoest door brand, maar in 1656 werd het herbouwd. Toen het kasteel in 1665 in handen kwam van Gerard Ernest Hoen van Cartils.
Tijdens de Franse bezetting werd het kasteel overgenomen door de familie De Villers Masbourg d'Eclaye in 1814, en het bleef in handen van deze familie tot eind jaren '60 van de 20ste eeuw.
In 1968 werd het kasteel verkocht aan de gemeente Valkenburg-Houthem. Deze verkochten het kasteel weer door aan een aannemer in 1977, die startte met de restauratie van het pand.
In 1986 werd dit door de familie Bot overgenomen, dat een hotel en appartementen realiseerde in het gebouw. Het tv-programma first dates hotel is hier opgenomen.
Helaas is het kasteel niet te bezichtigen.

The name Schaloen comes from the lord of the castle Reinier IV van Hulsberg van Schaloen, owner of the castle between 1442 and 1457.
In the Eighty Years' War, the castle was almost completely destroyed by fire, but it was rebuilt in 1656.
During the French occupation, the castle was taken over by the De Villers Masbourg d'Eclaye family in 1814, and it remained in the hands of this family until the late 1960s.
In 1968 the castle was sold to the municipality of Valkenburg-Houthem. They sold the castle on to a contractor in 1977, who started the restoration of the building.
In 1986 this was taken over by the Bot family, who realized a hotel and apartments in the building. Unfortunately, the castle cannot be visited.

The castle is located in the meadow of the river Geul near the village of Oud-Valkenburg. The canal around the house is fed with water from the Molenbeek, a Geul branch that formed the main branch of the Geul in the 16th century. The castle is located north of the Oud-Valkenburgerweg, the through road from Valkenburg to Schin op Geul.
The rectangular castle is built of marl and originally dates from the 12th century. Then it was a bit smaller. It was expanded in the following century, but almost completely burned down in 1575. On the map Jacob van Deventer in 1550, the castle with attribution Sloenes clearly visible in its current form. In the middle is a residential tower with an extension as an entrance. A wing has been added on both sides. The arkel turrets date from the 16th century. There is a wide canal around it.

The long branches of the beech trees form a hedge of branches across the path and - especially when the branches are full of leaves - form a beautiful and natural tunnel.
