This week's trip down memory lane is from the day we hiked on the Mendenhall Glacier. Maybe I was getting fomo of all the nice white wintery photos popping up from our Northern hemisphere neighbours ;) This view is from the helicopter on the way to the glacier over the magnificent Juneau Icefields. The immensity has to be felt and a photo can't really do it justice. They were a truly amazing sight. Camera equipment wasn't allowed unfortunately so this is just from my little Sony RX point & shoot.
Happy Friday all !

So this is just one aspect of the many incredible views at the top of Kunanyi (Mt Wellington) which dominates Hobart, Tasmania. One of the coldest places I have been, but also one with the most spectacular views. The usual views are over Hobart nestled far below, but the rugged alpine landscapes that spread out in all directions are what caught my eye.
Happy weekend everyone!
The Aletsch Glacier or Great Aletsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Alps. It has a length of about 23 km,] has about a volume of 15.4 km3, and covers about 81.7 km2 in the eastern Bernese Alps in the Swiss canton of Valais. The Aletsch Glacier is composed of four smaller glaciers converging at Konkordiaplatz, where its thickness was measured by the ETH to be still near 1 km. It then continues towards the Rhône valley before giving birth to the Massa. The whole area, including other glaciers is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch Protected Area, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.

I was heading south in western Wisconsin on a state single lane highway and while not mountainous I did end up climbing up a pretty good size hill. Near the top I saw a sign that said Scenic Viewpoint ahead. I pulled in and was looking forward to a view of the valley below. Well, most of the scenic view was blocked by these trees. The area was apparently new, a new asphalt parking area, but not a clear view. Maybe they'll cut back these trees and open the view later. Anyway, it was raining, and decided to take some pictures regardless of the blocked view. I kinda liked how this one came out, so not a wasted stop.
Decided to re-title this shot. I had "creepy trees", but that was bugging me. Being that it's winter, but was warm enough for rain rather than snow.

Oeschinen Lake (Oeschinensee) is a lake in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland, 4 kilometres east of Kandersteg in the Oeschinen valley. At an elevation of 1578 metres, it has a surface area of 1.1147 square kilometres. Its maximum depth is 56 metres. A gondola lift from Kandersteg leads to Oeschinen, 25 minutes by foot from the lake. Since 2007 the lake is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn UNESCO World Heritage Site. As of summer 2021, a circumnavigation of Lake Oeschinen is not possible. The reason for this is the danger of an imminent rockfall on the south shore, which is why paths are closed there.
