It was Scarecrow day today in our village. This one depicts a Scarecrow Wedding, of course Tyson had to get in on the occasion!

A scarecrow stands watch over a nearby garden. I like this old fashioned way of keeping the birds off the crops. In fact, I'm thinking about getting one myself--the dang birds keep eating our strawberries. If only scarecrows had a brain.
In the foreground, wild sweet peas dominate the vegetation. The sweet pea is one of Marg's favorite local wildflowers. Because of our abnormally wet winter they're blooming in abundance this year.

A scarecrow in a field beneath the Devizes Millennium White Horse, Wiltshire. The Devizes Millennium White Horse was cut in 1999 to celebrate the forthcoming third millennium, and is based on a design of another white horse hill figure, which was also known as the Devizes White Horse, or sometimes The Snobs Horse, which was very close to the present horse as it was also on Roundway Hill beneath the Oliver's Castle hill fort. Traces of the Snobs Horse can still be seen under the right conditions.
The Devizes White Horse is the eighth and latest major white horse hill figure cut in Wiltshire to be seen today, and is 45.7 metres (150 ft) long by 45 metres (148 ft) high. The horse, although sometimes viewed from an skewed angle when on nearby roads, can be seen from miles away, including from Bratton Castle on Bratton Downs, home to Westbury White Horse. It is also visible from the Vale of Pewsey, home to the Pewsey White Horse, where the Devizes White Horse and Alton Barnes White Horse can be seen facing each other.

I'd like to tell you that this was a hard-won wildlife shot, but I'm afraid that this beautiful bird was tethered to a post as part of a display at Desford Scarecrow Festival 2021. The only photographic challenge was low light under an awning. The owl was part of a "bird on your arm" experience. I have mixed feelings about that but it appeared content perch on gloved arms of delighted onlookers. And I suppose it might well scare a crow!
This fellow drops by once a year. He doesn't cause much trouble, but he sometimes has a little too much of the spiked punch.
We continue Halloween week with a more traditional scarecrow -- staked upright and looming large.

Reminicent to a scene in the original "Planet of the Apes", barren trees appear on the crest of a hill above the landscape below. They almost look as though they are scarecrows planted to keep the curious away. Or, perhaps my imagination once again got the better of me
