Scandinavian Air System (SAS), jointly run by Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, currently does not service Los Angeles. SAS passengers heading for Los Angeles must transfer to Star Alliance partner United at Chicago O'Hare, Newark, or London Heathrow. But in the past, SAS did bring its own planes to Los Angeles.
In fact, when SAS inaugurated its Los Angeles service using the DC-8, it was Los Angeles's first polar route. The long range of the DC-8 allowed nonstop service to Seattle and continuation to Los Angeles, saving a lot of distance over the more traditional routing over the North Atlantic.

LN-ROX contributes in illustrating SAS' last of the Mohicans. prior to the surviving MD80s, SAS used to be a Douglas' stronghold as far customer loyalty was concerned. The tri-national airline has operated once the DC.4/6/7C/8/9 and 10, all in fairly large numbers by European standards.
The 23 MD82s are operated alongside two surviving shorter MD87s. The Eighty are configurated to accomodate 150 guests in a single class economy cabin.
They have been taking more than their shares for over two decades in turning SAS as the most punctual airline of Europe.
One of 23 "MadDogs" still serving SAS, Mike-Oscar taxies to gate on a late Sunday afternoon.
The airline was founded in 1946 as a consortium to pool Det Danske Luftfartselskab's, Svensk Interkontinental Lufttrafik's and Det Norske Luftfartselskap's transatlantic services. European and domestic cooperation started two years later, and in 1951 the airlines merged to create SAS.
