EB CN grain train G898 is on its knees as it climbs out of the Mississippi River valley. The train is cresting the highest elevation on the railroad ( in the state of Illinois ) at Scales Mound. The train could be heard 15 minutes before it arrived. Thanks to Craig for the intel.

I would have preferred a 50mm shot off the road bridge that I am on, but there is a thick wire going across the tracks. I am standing on the roof of my truck, in order to get above the wire. No way to get below the wire.

My first stab at a smaller scale vehicle. The design is 100% my own and I plan an using it for a bigger project, which I may or may not finish. It doesn’t quite look right, but just enough to pass as an M48. I need to reshape the turret rear and possibly switch to a larger barrel for the commanders cupola.

I thought I'd have an outing before my area goes in to Covid Tier 3 tomorrow. Revisited Scale Haw Force hoping, this time, for some autumnal colours but suspect I'd missed the best of it.

Dettifoss waterfall Iceland, situated in northeastern Iceland, not far from Mývatn.

You see the falling Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, which comes from the Vatnajökull glacier and collects water from a large area in north-east Iceland. Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfalls in Europe, having a flow between 200.000 and 500.000 litres per second !!! The falls are 100 m wide and have a drop of 44 m down to the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon.

I went to so many waterfalls in Iceland that I can't remember the name of this one. The sun was up creating intense contrast - a difficult shot. Pictured here with photographer Steve Bell balanced on a rock to give it a bit of scale

The Peterbuilt doesn't look so big when compared it to the Galaxy C-5's engines. The Galaxy C-5 is the world's largest military airplane. This one and the ones in the background are in storage at the Aircraft Maintenance and Regeneration Group, Tuscon, Arizona. At the time I took this picture (2012) there were over four thousand US military aircraft being stored here, and they are all wrapped for protection from the elements. I did some research and this particular airplane (0466) seems to still be there.

Plenty of trees at the park. Taman Botani has themed gardens of various places...this is the mediterranean species - i cant recall the species. A rustic bark and compound leaves, just wonderful in the diffused light.

Weights can be evaluated only in comparison. Too much thoughts lately, it will change soon :)

Bornean Keeled Pitviper (Tropidolaemus subannulatus) - Malua Forest Reserve, Malaysia

A T. subannulatus from the Malaysian Rainforest in Borneo. This is probably the most common viper species in Borneo but this individual has a somewhat unusual color atleast when compared to the others which I encountered. This one had more of a blueish tint to its scales which made it a rather strikingly colored snake. By playing around with my lighting I was able to get a shot which really showed off the texture of the scales.

The pressure and temperature scales for weather measuring on the old wall piece from yesteryear. Still fine today.

This is part of the front scale from a Remington 12 typewriter, from the early 20th century. The numbers reflect the scale of 10 characters per inch, with each minor tick representing the width of one character - one-tenth of an inch.

My work with snowflakes is deceptive; I favour the symmetrical snowflakes because I find them more beautiful, but it’s quite rare to find a snowflake with this level of symmetry. There’s a lot of chaos that goes into the formation of these crystals, and a symmetric snowflake is just one of countless possibilities.

They almost all start with symmetry, however. On the smallest molecular scale, all snowflakes are pretty much just hexagonal prisms. If environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.) remain the same, that symmetry will continue as a snowflake grows into a larger prism. As it grows, however, something changes: as the distance from one corner to another increases, so too does the potential for different parts of a snowflake to experience slightly different conditions. There is nothing that ties the growth of all six branches of a snowflake together other than the fact that they all grow in the same conditions.

As a certain point, the “branching instability” kicks in. This is triggered when the corners of a small hexagonal snowflake can collect more available water vapour (building blocks) than the inner portions of the crystal facets; whatever stick out the farthest, grows the fastest. This is why branches form from all outwardly-facing angles of a snowflake. As branches continue to grow further from the center, the likelihood of different growth conditions – even just immeasurably small fluctuations in humidity – increases exponentially. Symmetry is still possible, but it becomes more of a lottery game as it grows. A snowflake like this would be like hitting the jackpot.

Another fun snowflake fact: the crystal structure only has primary features on one side. Notice how the inner parts of the branches are relatively lower in contrast then darker features emerge as they widen? The less-contrasty areas do have surface features, but they are on the rear side of the snowflake. Changes in growth conditions can flip the side where these details are featured – a mechanism I do not fully understand, but the evidence of it happening is right in front of you – the higher-contrast area on the “paddle” of the branches is surface details interacting with the light from my flash, showcasing the contours of the crystal.

The tiny hexagon in the center is the result of the snowflake beginning as a column which grew plates from either side. The bottom plate must have been facing the wind and grew faster, leaving the smaller plate to forever remain inside that footprint. Without access to water vapour, its growth would have nearly halted – and it would be a stable environment that allows for the maintenance of near perfect symmetry… at least at the center!

Want to know how to make snowflake images like this? The equipment, techniques, and entire editing process are detailed in my 384pg hardcover book on macro photography: skycrystals.ca/product/pre-order-macro-photography-the-un... - $75 Canadian, which is roughly USD$59.50 with the current exchange rate. Ask anyone with a copy and you’ll tell you it’s worth every penny. :)

MFG: Golden Wheels Scale 1:64

This was the first time on this trip I could stop and take all my toys from the car with enough time to enjoy.

I was designated driver at the time, my co-driver happily sleeping as the sun came up on this glorious vista. Took a while to find a safe parking spot so missed the 'Golden time' but hey, I'm not complaining. More to follow.
