Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Golden Mop' False Cypress PLTD 2003

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Golden Mop' () 2020 photo - Common Name: Dwarf Sawara False Cypress, Size at 10 years: 3x3ft., stringy, whip-like, golden yellow foliage, USDA Hardiness Zone 4, In Garden Bed S2 for 9.7 YEARS (Lowes). Planted in 2010.

Missouri Botanical Garden: ‘Golden Mop’ is a mounded, slow-growing, dwarf shrub that typically grows to 2-3' tall and as wide over the first 10 years, eventually maturing to as much as 5' tall. This is a filifera-type plant with stringy, whip-like, golden yellow foliage. It retains good yellow color throughout the year. Cultivar name comes from the reportedly similarity of a small shrub to a mop head.

Big box. Golden Mop False Cypress is a mutation of ‘Filifera Aurea’ and a true dwarf, 3 feet in 10 years , with a more intense yellow color. Planted in 2010. 32x36 inches in 2019.

Missouri Botanical Garden: ‘Filifera Aurea’ is noted for its drooping yellow foliage. This is a dense, semi-dwarf, evergreen shrub that typically grows as a broad cone. It is slow growing, often reaching only 6-7’ tall in 20 years, but may eventually reach 15-20’ tall in optimum conditions. Features golden, weeping, thread-like foliage that provides excellent texture and color to foundation plantings. Foliage is usually quite attractive in winter. Small cones appear only on mature plants. Peeling, reddish-brown bark develops on mature branches. This cultivar, as well as other Filifera cultivars, is also often commonly called threadleaf false cypress in recognition of the thread-like foliage.

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Filifera Aurea' Yellowthread Falsecypress PLTD 1981

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Squarrosa Pygmaea', 2019 photo, Common Name: Sawara False Cypress, Size: 1x1ft., Blue green foliage, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, In Garden Bed HR-G3 for 38.2 YEARS (HLG). Planted in 1981.

American Conifer Society: Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Squarrosa Pygmaea’ is a dwarf form of Sawara cypress that is similar to Ch. pisifera ‘Squarrosa Intermedia’ in foliage and color. The foliage is blue-green in color and juvenile in structure. Although many believe that that are one in the same, many arboreta have displayed the two side by side to compare the divergent rates of growth. Differences could be explained as differences in propagation practices. While this is possible, it would also suggest that a given specimen would be unstable and throw erratic growth. Many specimens in older collections support this idea that the cultivar is stable over time.

In 1923, Murray Hornibrook first described the original plants that were growing in Arnold Arboretum outside of Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 1923. One can still find these very old, very dense plants growing there. ‘Squarrosa Pygmaea’ originated as a slow-growing mutation growing on ‘Squarrosa Intermedia.’ Some publications describe this plant under the cultivar name, ‘Squarrosa Minima.’

Chamaecyparis pisifera 'Spaan's Cannonball', 2019 photo, Common Name: Sawara False Cypress, Size: 1x1ft., Green dense foliage, USDA Hardiness Zone 4, In Garden Bed HR-G1 for 9.1 YEARS (HLG). Planted in 2010.

American Conifer Society: Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Spaan’s Cannonball’ is a diminutive, dense ball of tightly packed, creamy pale-green foliage. The plant is similar, but quite small than the better-known Ch. pisifera ‘Plumosa Compressa Aurea.’

This cultivar’s origin is speculative at best. It is clearly named for Jon Spaan who was an active nurseryman in Washington state in the 1950s and 60s. It unknown at this time whether or not he found the original plant or if it was simply named for him. The nature of the mutation is also a mystery . . . It is often seen listed in the nursery trade simply as, ‘Cannonball.’
