This photo was taken on a very windy day and it looked like the bee was having a little fun blowing back and forth with the wind. It stayed on there for quite a while before flying away. Best viewed large.

The purple coneflower (echinacea), is one of the biggest bee attractors. Drawn to the wildflower for its bright color, bees forage on both the nectar and the pollen that the plant produces. It blooms for a long period during mid-summer to fall, providing many months of nectar for the bees.

This hibiscus bush was a blend of several bushes - showing white, pink and purple flowers. Loads of little bees gathering pollen all over the bush.

Slovenia proposed May 20th be official World Bee Day in light of what is happening to the bees. It’s celebrated to draw attention to the importance of bees and other pollinators.

The day focuses on promoting actions by individuals, society, organizations, and governments for improving the diversity and abundance of their habitats—all while showing support for beekeeping.

The date chosen was the birthday of Anton Jansa, a modern apiculture pioneer from Slovenia.

The bees are very scarce this year compared to last year so I was thrilled when I saw this one.

What the Buzz (my bee and pollinator preservation/education project) has found a new home on the Corsica south coast and will be opening soon. I'm just getting the bees situated in their new home and putting the finishing touches on a few things, but I am so excited to be able to share my passion with people again!

“Blind Melon - No Rain”: youtu.be/qmVn6b7DdpA

“All I can say is that my life is pretty plain

I like watchin' the puddles gather rain

And all I can do is just pour some tea for two

And speak my point of view but it's not sane

It's not sane

I just want someone to say to me, oh

I'll always be there when you wake, yeah

You know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today

So stay with me and I'll have it made

And I don't understand why I sleep all day

And I start to complain that there's no rain

And all I can do is read a book to stay awake

And it rips my life away but it's a great escape

Escape, escape, escape

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain

You don't like my point of view, you think that I'm insane

It's not sane, it's not sane

I just want someone to say to me, oh

I'll always be there when you wake, yeah

You know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today

So stay with me and I'll have it made, I'll have it made, I'll have it made

Oh, no, no, you know, I really wanna, really gonna have it made

You know, I'll have it made”

Bees are the leading pollinators in the world. Humans depend on pollinators to help produce food crops. These pollinated crops contribute to one-third of the world’s food supply, according to Nature.com.

Also known as a Confusing Bumble Bee, this insect is 1/2" - 3/4" in length and usually nests underground. This was my first time seeing this type of bee as it is very rare in my area.

It seems like this could be a full time job. They are drawn to our pool, so I have to keep scooping them out. Then they must rest before flying off. This one had a perfect water droplet on his furry little back.

The Bee and the Iris

First time I laid eyes on the Italian Queen, I knew she was special. The worker bees have laid out a beautiful honey frame on both sides. This frame will be one of the few that will be extracted into honey this year. Honey extraction in Northern Nevada is traditionally the week of the 4th of July. This will be my first honey harvest.

Sweat Bees are important pollinators. They get their name from their being attracted by perspiration.

Winter is roughly 12 weeks (or a rough 12 weeks) and we are at the mid way point. The daylight is lasting longer and the weather will start to warm up. We had a blast of very cold weather with some snow this week so thoughts of Springtime are on my mind. Last Spring this Great Gray Owl was hunting in a field of dandelions-hope to catch this natural yellow backdrop again this Spring.
