Increasingly as I explore some of America's most pristine landscapes, I'm confronted by view-killing, lung-clogging dust and smog. I had heard a year or two ago that California's air pollution can get a boost by up to 50% from overseas, but it seems to be particularly bad lately, so I went looking for an update on the subject.
Here's what I found:
"if you go to the Western national parks during the springtime, you're very likely to have your visibility decreased by Asian dust..."
"Human health suffers when dust plumes drift into town. Clouds of dust or smoke contain microscopic particles that, when inhaled, penetrate deep into the lungs. Studies in publications such as The New England Journal of Medicine have found that cities with chronically high levels of particles have higher death rates, mostly from heart and lung disease. And emergency-room visits and death rates rise in the days following a spike in particle pollution."
“Los Angeles may get as much as 50 parts per billion of its ozone from overseas…. A 'Code Orange' alert warning… is issued when ozone levels average 80 parts per billion.”
"The EPA's Bachmann says the base-line ozone content of the world's air has at least doubled since the Industrial Revolution. That means base-line ozone alone gets U.S. air uncomfortably close to being unhealthy."

I was too slow to get my camera set up to catch the bright crimson red crescent moon setting, but my eyes could just make out its light still shining through the clouds on the horizon.
Scientists have determined that California now gets 1/3 of its air pollution arriving from overseas (another way to say that is that this international air pollution gives our own air pollution levels a 50% boost)... which makes for colorful sunsets and moonsets! That seems like a better way to look at the situation than "we're having our goods manufactured overseas so it can be done with zero regulation and limitless pollution, where there also isn't a darned thing you can do about the increased asthma, lung cancer, and overall lowered quality of life which we may look forward to as a result." When the fallout of lead, PCBs, DDT, and other highly toxic substances becomes measurable in our milk, wheat, corn, fish, etc, you can be sure that our elected representatives will be well paid to sweep the issue under the rug for a few more decades.
