When you see these palm trees from space, you know you are looking at Dubai! 100 days until the World Expo opens there. The French pavilion is set to be on point, I might be involved in some way 😉. One picture is the result of using the maximum zoom we have available on our cameras on the Space Station : a 2x teleconverter on a 800 mm lens, giving us 1600 mm focal length. The disadvantage of using this setup is that you have to focus manually, so it is harder to to get sharp pictures (we fly at 28 800 km/h remember!). Dubai, and especially the human-made Palm Jumeirah islands, is another cliché picture for astronauts. From space we have a tendency to focus in on details of Earth, I think because it is super satisfying for us to get the timing right and zoom in and get lucky that the clouds disperse to capture that perfect shot. However with Google maps easily available for all with internet I suspect many on Earth prefer more zoomed out shots showing the curvature of our planet from a distance, is that right? You can compare an image of Dubai I took during Proxima with one of these newer ones here: www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2021/06/Dubai_palm_isla...
