Devdas style saree

The Sari (Saree) is the primary dress Indian women wear, especially in South India. It's basically a plain piece of cloth about 6 yards long and about 4 feet wide. There are some longer versions. They come in various materials (silk, cotton and synthetic blends). It can be worn in about a half dozen principle ways, and several variations thereof.

The silk versions are the most expensive, especially the ones that are accentuated with gold threads, called Zari. The material of the Zari is a synthetic thread made to look like gold, but in the old days, they used real gold or silver-gold alloys. Even today, sarees with gold or gold-silver Zaris can be bought, but they are obviously, very expensive.

The cheapest saris cost less than US $5, and the high-end ones with real metal Zaris or extensive embroidery can cost well in excess of US$5,000. Custom-woven sarees (usually for weddings) could cost even more. So there's something that can be found to fit any budget.

A sari or saree is a strip of unstitched cloth, worn by females, ranging from four to nine yards in length that is draped over the body in various styles which is native to the Indian Subcontinent. The word Sari is also supposedly derived from chati or shati - a South Indian word. The term for female bodice, the choli is derived from another ruling clan from south, the Cholas. Rajatarangini (meaning the 'river of kings'), a tenth century literary work by Kalhana, states that the Choli from the Deccan was introduced under the royal order in Kashmir. The concept of Pallava, the end piece in the sari, originated during the Pallavas period and named after the Pallavas, another ruling clan of Ancient Tamilakam.

It is popular in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Burma, Malaysia, and Singapore. The most common style is for the sari to be wrapped around the waist, with one end then draped over the shoulder, baring the midriff.
