America the Beautiful
I titled this with no intent of sarcasm. Let me tell you why.
Today I passed through a very small American town as I often do as part of my job. This particular town is near a rather well known covered bridge that I have been wanting to photograph, and when I drove by and saw this couple I decided to ask them for directions, primarily because they were the only visible sign of human life on the streets of this town.
I was dressed in business attire and you can see how they were dressed. I was a complete stranger to them. I pulled my car to the curb and walked up to them and asked them for directions to the covered bridge. What happened next is what makes America beautiful.
Instead of brushing my question aside, or treating me rudely, or not answering me at all, they were extremely warm and friendly and gave me directions gladly. As I witnessed this act of kindness, I thought to myself, if this were two people dressed in business attire and a stranger pulled up dressed as these folks were dressed, how would the two people in business attire respond to the stranger? One can't say for sure, but in many instances, I suspect the response might not have been so warm and accommodating.
I have to confess, I almost didn't stop because I was concerned of how my interaction with these folks might turn out. In fact, I circled the block three times trying to decide whether to stop or not.
Upon experiencing their kindness, I asked for permission to take their photograph. They consented, and after I made this photograph I showed it to them both. They smiled with the same warmth they showed me in providing directions to the covered bridge. Not many words were exchanged, but something more valuable than words filled the moment. It was palpable.
This is the "America the Beautiful" I remember from growing up in the 50's and 60's. I fear we're losing it rapidly in a world of hyperbole and exaggeration and outright lies.
I was moved today, by the kindness of two people who will never experience the tangible blessings I've been given, but whom I'm confident are rich in their own right.
This is "America the Beautiful". Today and tomorrow and every day we have left on this earth, we have the choice in every word we say, every social media post we make, every interaction we have with one another, to make America beautiful, or to make it ugly. The choice is our ours.

I love the sea serpents and have used them before. This is the first time I've made a piece where the thread inspired me to make the design before anything else. I picked up the overdyed silk at the Stitch&Craft show at Olympia in March and loved using it.
Now on my desk at work......

Yes, it was time for a holiday dinner, Twentynine Palms style. (Sarcasm alert.) Before going over to the park, I went to Del Taco for a burrito. If you don't live in southern California, think of the place as being a competitor to Taco Bell. Tonight's self assignment: go over to the park and find the most alienesque, Star-Trek-set-shaped Joshua Tree you can find. Verdict? I failed.
The first frame at upper left is Joshua Junior. Right center frame is a Cholla and not a Joshua Tree. I had to include it because the Cholla was lit so well by the setting sun.
I forced myself to use the backup camera to make sure it still works. All the trees were shaped mostly like normal trees.
It's busy in the park owing to the holiday weekend. I love pulling up to North Entrance and finding zero cars queued up to pay the entrance fee. As usual, a car ahead of me was going twenty miles per hour below the speed limit. There was a procession of maybe eight vehicles behind the slow visitor.
We almost always have nice sunsets and today supported the rule. At every sunset there are a few dozen photographers shooting one thing or another. Some were employing tripods shooting the sunset. Every night there are photographers shooting tan models with long, blow-dried hair wearing sequined tube dresses or yoga shorts and sports bras, not that I was looking.
It seems like there are more birds in my yard than in the park. There was a lone, unknown-species bat seen in the park. When I got home, there were two bats flying over the neighbor's yard.
There is no them. There is only us.

.....I'm a bit irritated at the flickrverse today. I woke up to an email telling me my Entire Account has been set as Restricted. Not even Moderate. Full on unsafe evil.
The thing is, I moderate all of my photos with darkened or shadowie parts, and have made a recent effort to frame and hide so I don't have to restrict access. I'm down to about a flaggable photo a week or two......so if anything slipped through my radar, it would be one stray photo every several weeks or months, in the midst of silly smiles and stuffed animals.
I've been having the dark sort of fun, going through my images, and picking the silliest and most innocent and going, "This is porn. ....This is porn. .....Yup. This is porn....."
I filed my complaint, and sure enough, within an hour my account was restored (thank you! speedy flickr gods....). ...The only flickr-moderated image being a 100-image mosaic, where each image is about 40 pixels high.
So basically? My account is getting repeatedly flagged for unobjectionable content....and classified with a level of restriction so harsh, I prefer not to include it in my own safesearch filters. Which is to say, if I were on my own friendslist? I would be completely oblivious to the photos other-me was posting. Filthy by my own standards.
I have a couple of paranoid theories about who would be flagging my images without reason.... The most disturbing possibility is that I'm being flagged by strangers for lesbian content. A kiss is just a kiss, people, no matter how equally soft the lips. Stop hating me for loving her.

Paradise: (at the Booty Burger, adjusts her hat as she rolls up to the order window)
Fawn: (as Paradise rolls past the table where she's sitting with friends) Nice hat.
Paradise: (smiles at the sarcasm in Fawn's tone) Thanks. Nice weave.
Fawn: (glares) I don't HAVE a WEAVE.
Paradise: My bad. (hands off the order to the guy at the window)
Huey Lewis And the News on the Oldies station: I'm supposed to get a raise week, you know damn well I won't - Workin' for a livin'
Lawrence "Manny" Lemans: (owner of Booty Burger, spots Paradise at the order window) Hey, New Girl Number Two!
Paradise: Mr. Lemans, my name is, Paradise.
Manny: My name's, Manny, but you don't call me that, and I don't call you, Paradise, until you're definitely hired. You ain't definitely hired yet. Go take care of DU5.
Paradise: (pushing away from the window) You know, you're not saving syllables when you say, DU.
Manny: I'm not saying it to save syllables. I'm saying it 'cause it sounds cool.
Paradise: (shakes her head as she roller skates across the lot, toward stall 5, stopping when she sees who it is) You've got to be kidding.
Huey Lewis And the News on the Oldies station: Hey I'm not complainin' 'cause I really need the work
Alex: (is sitting at the wheel of her car while Amber, Holly, and Stacy are standing)
Amber/Holly/Stacy: Woo hoo! Training Day!

Amber: Can't do that!
Stacy: Gotta play by the rules!
Paradise: (turns with a sigh) Rules?
Amber: (smirking) It's Training Day. You know the drill.
Huey Lewis And the News on the Oldies station: I'm takin' what they're givin' 'cause I'm workin' for a livin
Paradise: (sighs) I've only been on the other side of it.
Alex: Waitress?
Paradise: I'm a carhop.
Alex: A lateral move, at best.
Stacy: (demands) Where's my menu?
Paradise: (points at the large display beside the car)
Stacy: Oh.
Amber: I'd like a cherry Big Suck. (referring to the slushy type and size)
Holly: Cola Double Suck!
Stacy: Fries and a raspberry Super Suck!
Alex: Cola Basic Suck for me. (smiling)

Huey Lewis And the News on the Oldies station: Walkin' on the streets it's really all the same - Sellin' souls, rock 'n' roll, any other day
Amber/Holly/Stacy: (chanting) Suck! Suck! Suck!
Paradise: (shakes her head and rolls back to the order window, handing off the order, still hearing the chant, and others have taken it up, then she rolls back with their order, hooking it on the side of the vehicle)
Alex: I have to say, the service here is a little slow.
Paradise: (to Amber) This was your idea, wasn't it?
Amber: Pleading the Fifth.
Paradise: You know that doesn't make you look innocent, Cohen.
Amber: (sticks out her tongue at her friend)
Stacy: There aren't any trans fats in these fries, are there? I'm watching my figure.
Paradise: You're a stick figure, so what do you care?
Holly: Hey, she's a customer. You can't talk to her that way.
Stacy: (with faux indignation) I demand to see your manager!
Huey Lewis And the News on the Oldies station: Workin' for a livin' - (Workin') - Workin' for a livin'
Paradise: (sighs) Okay, I'm sorry. Did you guys want anything else? I'm sure there are a lot more people I know coming to torture me.
Amber: I think we're good, for now.
Paradise: Great. (hands the bill to Amber) Please follow the Treasure Trail around the building and pay at the window. (she points as she says this)
Alex: Are you this grumpy with all of your customers?
Paradise: Only the ones who chant "suck" at me.
Amber/Holly/Stacy: (look at each other, break into grins, and chant) Suck! Suck! Suck!
Paradise: (shakes her head and wheels back from the car as Alex maneuvers along the exit toward the barrier arm that looked like a fallen coconut tree which only raised after the cashier at the window was paid)
Huey Lewis And the News on the Oldies station: Workin' for a livin', livin' and workin' - I'm takin' what they're givin' 'cause I'm workin' for a livin'
Manny: Hey! New Girl Two! You got somebody in DU1!
Paradise: Of course I do. (as she rolls along) It's probably the drama class. (stops beside a nondescript sedan with tinted windows) Hello? May I take your order? (the window rolls down, revealing Tyler Griffin) Oh!
Tyler: Oh, hello again.
Paradise: (loses her balance on the skates and falls on her backside)

Though one can find a bit sarcasm in the caption, there is nothing funny in it. We can only capture frames like this, but there is no denial that we will faint if we have to do this under the scorching hot sun.
Week 04: Your Other Hobby
A little sarcasm here as it's not a fun hobby but it sure does feel like I have been doing more of this lately than shooting my camera. Always great to spend some quality time with Dad. The snow banks are crazy. I measured it today at just over 10 feet. I hope they do snow removal soon. It's not even February yet ahhhhhh
have a great week friends

Because it looks so terrible here right? (sarcasm)
So my photo yesterday seems to have drawn a lot of attention from the American Red Cross. I've got a few messages and it is featured in their blog and soon to be used for their advertising. Looks like I might become a face (or finger hehe) for the Red Cross. Very cool.
I have been wanting to leave for a while though. I would love to be able to go travel with an organization doing relief/missions work if they would cover the costs. If I could get on doing photography that would be a huge plus.
Things I learned today:

Collies Ledge , Sgurr Alisdair to Sgur Mhic Coinnich
A family holiday in Skye which I was really looking forward to and the first two days were looking superb (weather wise)- how could I resist the pull of my favourite place in the whole wide world – The Black Cuillin??? With family commitments and trying not to lose any brownie points, I set the alarm at 4am, sound in the knowledge that the rest of the family wouldn’t surface till well after 9!! In fact I hoped they wouldn’t know I was gone until at least mid morning!!;) Which would then give me time to get back soon after as if I hadn’t been away at all !! (Please read last bit with a sprinkling of sarcasm ;)).
After arriving at our home for the week, I set about getting my gear ready and I was ready for the off early on the Monday morning….
4am and porridge and coffee were consumed and then a drive into the sunrise with some of the most majestic scenery in the world. To add to my delight the first thing I saw as I left the car was an otter crossing the garden , this was followed by the skies glowing pink, then orange as the sun rose before the hour hand hit 5am. I was finding it hard not to stop at every layby to take photos, but I eventually got round and down to a quiet (a rarity in the summer) Glen Brittle for about 05.30am. The Cuillin were inviting me up and I had a right good spring in my step. My original objective was a quick blast up The Great Stone Chute an back again to allow me to get back mid morning, however if things were looking good (they were!) I wanted to visit Collies Ledge again and then head up Sgurr Mhic Coinnich. The last time I had been on these peaks was on a traverse of the ridge 14 years previously and I have vivid memories of Collies Ledge which I wanted to relive today
The path up to Coire Lagan is well made and the Cuillin dominate the view, with Rum and Eigg taking second place;) Arriving in Coire Lagan the lovely lochan awaited and I stopped for a while on the slab of rock that sits on its crest and admired the views back down to the beach . However, I was only delaying the inevitable, that being the brutish ascent that was awaiting me. The Great Stone Chute is easily identified and just about takes you to the top of Sgurr Alasdair, I was expecting this ascent to be brutal, and it didn’t disappoint! Foot placements were key and I must admit the walking poles really helped (I was doubtful if they would’ve helped). After a good old slog, I eventually reached the Bealach. The sun was starting to light up Coire Lagan behind me which gave great views, but as I crested the bealach the panorama of the southern Cuillin with the mainland mountains as a back drop was spectacular! What a sight. It was around 07.30ish now and after gawking at the views I had the short scramble to the top of Sgurr Alasdair (involved a short balancey section!). It was fun though and soon I was perched on the highest point in Skye with the ridge stretching out before me ! I’d like to say I had the place to myself but before long I spotted a group of three climbers coming over from Sgurr Dubh Mor. It was amazing and I sat on the summit for about 30 minutes before moving on – the climbers I had seen hadn’t arrived by the time I left the summit but they would soon catch me up.
Descending back to the bealach and I decided that I would descend down the Great Stone Chute and traverse across the face of Sgurr Thearlaich to gain access to Collies Ledge. When we did the traverse, 14 year ago, we had come over Surr Thearaich to get to Collies Ledge but this involved some grade 3 scrambling, down the face and being on my lonesome, I decided on this slightly easier route today.
Once about a third down the Chute I found a slight path heading off north and traversing the rocky face. The poles were put away as to get to the Bealach Thearlaich involved some easy (grade 1) scrambling. I found a gully leading to the bealach and scrambled up. At this point I could hear voices very close and eventually spotted the three climbers descending Sgurr Thearaich. They were very close to me and I expected them to appear at the bealach at the same time I arrived but when arrived I couldn’t see them although I could still hear them. Next was the highlight of the hike – Collies Ledge. To ascend it from the bealach you follow the polished rock round to the right and a couple of scrambling moves up see you at the start of the airy traverse.
From this point , Collies Ledge didn’t disappoint! The airy traverse is a sheer joy. Nothing technically demanding but the exposure to your left is immense. At points I had both hands on the rock to my right with gapping drops looming below me, but saying that if you are ok with heights this is a few hundred metres to enjoy – absolutely stunning
I eventually reached the end of the traverse and soon the going was vertical again. At this point the three climbers had caught me up and I let them pass as it turned out they were doing the ridge traverse. They were moving well and at speed – hope they made it safely to the end of the ridge
Once you reach the crest of Sgurr Mhic Coinnichs ridge there is scrambling all the way to the summit. At points the exposure is almost greater than when on Collies Ledge as the drops are now on both sides. A head for heights is a definite requirement here! However I was soon on the summit and the chaps had passed and were quickly descending – heading for the Inn Pinn and Sgurr Dearg. Me on the other hand , well I was in no rush and I enjoyed another 45 minutes on this airy perch, enjoying the views and solitude. It was now about 9 am.
More filming and photos were taken and now I had to descend. I knew that more scrambling was required as I descended the same route I had just ascended. Beyond this however, more down climbing and scrambling moves are required before reaching the flat area above the An Stac Screes. After a wee bit of route finding on the descent (there are lots of ways down through the large boulders – some easier than others!) I eventually reached the flat area and sat and had a third breakfast before getting the poles out again for the scree descent.
Having done my research I knew I had to find the correct line for the descent, which wasn’t too bad as the weather was clear, I had noted this point on the way down from Sgurr Mhic Coinnich. The top of the descent is steep and loose and I was grateful for having poles, but once on the actually scree run, the going was slow but nice , his time having gravity on my side (unlike the ascent of The Great Stone Chute!
Before long and I was again in the magnificent amphitheatre of Coire Lagan. I sat down and relaxed. The helmet was replaced with my hat and I soaked in the views in the knowledge that I could just about start to relax! The path out was now the only obstacle and I headed down passing many , many people who were taking a walk on the fine, warm and sunny morning.
An hour after reaching the car (and driving past the busiest locations I’ve seen for years – Fairy Pools and Sligachan!), I eventually got home at lunchtime. A few brownie points were lost but not enough to stop another quick Cuillin blast later in the week (stay tuned!;))
