The town of Fira sits at the top of the cliff on the island of Santorini. Santorini was created in 1450 BC when a volcano erupted and spawned the dramatic, crescent-shaped island. Many believe that the island is a candidate for the lost city of Atlantis. After taking a tender ashore, we took a harrowing cable car straight up the hill.

Morning arrival view from the cruise ship. Santorini is built atop volcanic cliffs jutting out from the sea, and has 13 villages spread across the largest caldera on earth. It is very dramatic and picturesque, and its weather is unpredictable, as it was the day we visited. High winds forced our ships to depart early from its anchorage, as both the cable car up the cliffs and tenders to the ship were unable to operate safely by late afternoon.

Welcome to Santorini

Did the catastrophic volcanic eruption that ravaged Santorini circa 1600 BC destroy Crete's ancient Minoan civilization-and give birth to the myth of Atlantis? In 1967, archaeologists on Santorini unearthed the remains of a Bronze Age city that may have been home to as many as 30,000 people. Whether the Lost Continent of Atlantis is rooted in myth or reality, an undisputed fact remains. The eruption created a caldera and one of the most dramatic land and seascapes in the entire Mediterranean. On Santorini, white washed buildings cling to vertiginous cliffs that plunge to a turquoise sea. Part of the Cyclades Archipelago, the three island group of Santorini, Thirasia and uninhabited Aspronisi present the traveler with a unforgettable vistas.
