The pure white of most of the homes and other buildings on the Greek Island of Santorini is spotted with dashes of color and topped by beautiful old windmills and churches. Santorini is in the Southern Aegean Sea, about 120 miles southeast of the Greek mainland. It lies on the rim of a volcanic caldera, surrounding a central lagoon about 7 by 4 miles in size. The walls of the Caldera are roughly 1000 feet high, and the buildings hug the edge of the top. From a distance the white of all the buildings look like snow capping the rim.

This particular angle is arguably the most reproduced image in all of Santorini, and is seen on a lot of tourist brochures. The high-walled, winding streets of Oia make it a fun challenge to try and find special locations like this one where you can get a truly photogenic view that shows off the area. I got a tip about how to find this place from a scuba-diver off the coast of Akrotiri!

I took the picture from the ship in the bay off Santorini.

The islands of the Cyclades comprise one of the most enchanting parts of Greece, and Santorini my be the prettiest of the Cyclades.

Did not shoot too many details in Santorini. Sometimes I get lost in the over all view. This is one of the rare exeptions. A part of the old castle and a church wich is not painted blue and white, just a little different from the normal Santorini look.

Santorini Island in the south Aegean Sea, Greece, was named for the Macedonian martyr Saint Irene (Santa Irina). The island's capital Fira sits atop a cliff on the west coast.

I guess this island needs no description...
