The upper side of the Red Pierrot is also strikingly beautiful as its underside. The upper side of its wings is black except for a large portion of the lower edge of the hind wing which is orange and bordered with white spots. This too was captured at the Bannerghatta Butterfly Park in Bangalore.

Wish you a smooth sailing through 2009; leaving behind the recession, terror attacks, wars and all the unpleasant memories of 2008 at the shores.
Seeing this photo, I can think of a title for an Enid Blyton novel – Mystery of the Misty Woods :). I can visualize the Famous Five or the Secret Seven or the Five Find-Outers in these woods hunting for hidden clues. Still remember those days when we had to try so hard to get one of these books and still harder to read it, often by hiding it in the school books :). Really miss those days!
Dedicating this to Enid Mary Blyton, one of the best children storytellers of all time.
The Idukki Dam, located in Kerala, India, is one of the largest arch dam in Asia. This dam was constructed along with two other dams at Cheruthony and Kulamavu. Together, the three dams have created an artificial lake that is 60 km² wide. The stored water is used to produce electricity at the Moolamattom Power house, which is located inside nearby rocky caves.
This photograph shows a section of the reservoir taken during the start of monsoon season. As you can see, the water levels have not risen and the muddy banks can be seen.

"It was the last day of our Yosemite trip in April 2013. We were scheduled to fly out early the next morning and were planning to make the 4-hour drive to San Francisco that day. When we woke up and saw snow on the ground, we cancelled breakfast and raced up to tunnel view because we knew the snowy scene would be spectacular. And it was. The initial omen: only a coyote..." Dont go around tonight,

Ever since I remember, the image associated with Kochi (Cochin) is that of Chinese Fishing Nets typically during a sunset. These images conjured my mind during my visit to Fort Kochi. It’s been several years since I have been to the Fort Kochi beach (so called). There’s hardly anything to call it a beach. But photography wise the visit was very fruitful as I was able to capture many moods of sunset. This is one of the many captures that I had visualized.

One never gets tired of shooting these ingenious structures. My photostream has few of these in different moods. This is yet another but different.
The Danaid Eggfly or Mimic (Hypolimnas misippus) is a widespread species of nymphalid butterfly. It is well known for polymorphism and mimicry. Males are blackish with distinctive white spots that are fringed in blue. Females are in multiple forms that include male like forms while others appear like the toxic Danaus chrysippus and Danaus plexippus butterfles. They are found across Africa, Asia and Australia.

The Chinese fishing nets (Cheena vala) of Fort Kochi (Fort Cochin) in the City of Kochi (Cochin), in the Indian State of Kerala, are fixed land installations for an unusual form of fishing — shore operated lift nets. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20 m or more across. Each structure is at least 10 m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen.
The system is sufficiently balanced that the weight of a man walking along the main beam is sufficient to cause the net to descend into the sea. The net is left for a short time, possibly just a few minutes, before it is raised by pulling on ropes. The catch is usually modest: a few fish and crustaceans — these may be sold to passers by within minutes.
The system of counterweights is most ingenious. Rocks, each 30 cm or so in diameter are suspended from ropes of different lengths. As the net is raised, some of the rocks one-by-one come to rest on a platform thereby keeping everything in balance.
Each installation has a limited operating depth. Consequently, an individual net cannot be continually operated in tidal waters. Different installations will be operated depending on the state of the tide.
It is received wisdom that the nets are Chinese in origin. This is not as improbable as the 5,000 km distance from China might suggest — Kochi is a very important centre for the spice trade attracting traders from far and wide. Some suppose that the nets were introduced by the Chinese explorer Zheng He.
The Chinese fishing nets have become a very popular tourist attraction, their size and elegant construction is very photogenic and the slow rhythm of their operation is quite hypnotic. In addition, catches can be purchased individually and need be taken only a short distance to a street entrepreneur who will cook it.

Named as one of the "ten paradises of the world" by the National Geographic Traveler magazine, Kerala is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Often known as “God’s Own Country”, its beauty has to be seen to be believed. Of the many attractions of Kerala, the backwaters are a world of serenity and wonderment. Travelling through these backwaters, the picturesque shores and amazing flora & fauna provides endless opportunities for photography. This was captured during a ride through the backwaters of Kottayam.
