Dune Bashing is basically a form of off-roading done on sand dunes, usually in big 4X4 vehicles like the Toyota Land Cruiser or Fortuner. It basically involves driving at varying speeds over sand dunes and maneuvering the car in such a way as to maintain balance while going up the dune and coming down.
I hiked up a hillside about a mile through deep sand towards the end of the Golden Hour to be able to see & photograph these pristine sand dunes. The cottonwood Tree to the right shows how large these dunes are by relative comparison.
Moments of blowing sand as they shape the dunes. One amongst many precious moments spent in this beautiful place.

Curves and waves, sand dunes, Mojave Desert, California
Here's another photo from some of those "other" dunes in the Mojave Desert. I loved the curves in the foreground ridge, and positioned myself to juxtapose that ridge with the folds in the background.
You can see more of my recent dune photos from the Mojave Desert on my blog:

I shot this collection of photographs at White Sands during twilight, some in the early morning hours, but most in the evening. When the sun is below the horizon, the dunes and sky take on a magical presence. The dunes reflect the sky which can range from warm to cool, and there is a magical fifteen minutes when the sky away from the compass point of sunrise or sunset develops a glow of reds and oranges.
In late October, I made a trip to New Mexico to shoot the dunes at White Sands National Park. I hooked up with my close friend and photographer, Sandra Herber. www.flickr.com/photos/sandraherber/ We were at White Sands four days, made eight excursions into the dunes, hiked over 20 miles and shot close to 2,000 photos between us.
We are posting our images at the same time and it will be interesting to see how we handled being in the same locations together. For safety reasons and for the fun of it, we hiked the dunes together, sometimes pointing our lenses in the same direction, other times wandering apart. I am sure we got some similar shots, but it will be interesting to see those that are different as we each have our own way of looking at things, as well as having different focal length coverage. Then there is the processing aspect.
To say White Sands is magical is an understatement. As photographers, we talk about the light, emphasize the light, are critical about the light. The dunes at White Sands react in amazing ways to the change in light, offering different looks, revealing various personalities. It is this diversity of the dunes that I wanted to capture then, and present here now.
This is a minimalist photo with the framing weighted to the top edge of the composition, of a detail in a sand dune at Clam Harbour Beach.
The Pinnacles Desert, Western Australia
As the sands of this coastal desert move with the wind, they expose buried limestone pillars, of different sizes, shapes and some up to 11 feet high. Over time, new Pinnacles emerge and others are buried, in this everchanging landscape
Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado. Some of the dunes are very impressive, with sand waves as high as 750 ft.

Location
Merthyr Mawr National Nature Reserve, Merthyr Mawr, Nr Bridgend, South Wales
This lovely sand dune nature reserve was once joined to Kenfig National Nature Reserve, and a continuous belt of sand and dune systems ran all the way along the coast from the Ogmore estuary as far west as the Gower Peninsula. There are interruptions to the beaches now , but Wales still has large and relatively unspoilt coastal and sand dune habitats, which are home to many fascinating plants, insects and birds.
The sand dunes here are unusual ,because they have formed against a Carboniferous Limestone Plateau that runs from East to West along the coast, making the dunes at Merthyr Mawr the second highest in Europe. The reserve also contains examples of the successional stages of dune formation, from bare sand, embryonic dunes to (further inland) stabilised dunes and slacks.
The site is managed by the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW), and it is designated as a SSSI because of its wealth of plants and insect life. It is also well known as a place where some nationally rare and unusual fungi species grow
Sand-Düne unter Dach
• Andere Häuser sind teilweise schon vom Sand begraben, vereinzelt schieben sich Dünen bereits zum Dach hinauf.
• Other houses are partially buried by the sand, scattered dunes already move up to the roof.
I am not sure of the wisdom of shooting White Sands in 40mph winds, but I certainly was enthralled with the encounter. The camera was not completely honest; the experience was anything but soft, calm, and restful. I felt an outsider that day. The sands had an agenda all their own, and were keeping their secrets to themselves.
