Little known, but invaluable in beauty, is the Church of the Heart of Queen Mary of Bran

hides an extremely beautiful story about Queen Mary.

A faithful replica of the Stella Maris church from the town of Walsik, which was granted by Romania after World War II in Bulgaria, was built in Byzantine style at the request of Princess Eleana in memory of her mother, Queen.

History says that one of Queen Mary's greatest pleasures was spending time in Balchik's chapel and her wish was to bury her heart there after she died. Because this was no longer possible, the princess demanded the construction of a chapel very close to Bran Castle. The box containing the queen's heart was temporarily deposited in the wooden church of Bran Castle and after a year was transferred to a crypt dug into the rock of Bran Maggiore, awaiting the completion of the church.

In 1947, however, it was the abolition of the monarchy in Romania by the communist regime, so although the chapel was completed in time, it was no longer sanctified and Queen Maria's heart remained hidden in the rock for 27 years! It was not until 1968 that the director of the Bran Museum, together with others, opened the crypt and the sarcophagus and found the golden box containing the queen's heart. Inside the gold box was another silver box wrapped in English and Romanian flags, as well as platinum and gemstones. Since then, Queen Maria's heart is in the National Museum of Romanian History

This is my second shot from my Golden series.

Also called Basilica Catariniana.

St. Catherine was born in Siena in 1347, sanctified in 1461, and venerated as patroness of Siena, Italy and Europe. Inside St. Dominic's Basilica we found the Chapel dedicated to the saint, which contains her head inside a reliquary. The Chapel was built and decorated right after its sanctification in the Renaissance period. The Dominican basilica was built in the 13th century in Gothic style.

Hermitage of Our Lady of Mercy or of Santa María de la Cabeza,

It is the oldest Marian sanctuary in Madrid, since it has its origin in pre-Islamic times. Only its ruins and the hermit's house in the old Visigoth neighborhood of Caraquiz, on the outskirts of the Villa, have survived to this day.

Today we can see its floor plan, a single nave, in which the remains of iconostasis are still preserved, as well as part of the walls and the start of the apse, and the belfry, all dating from the 17th century.

The name of Santa María de la Cabeza was given to it because of the care that this saint had with the temple when she worked in it and for its later sanctification. In this way, she came to house her remains inside when she died until in the 18th century they were transferred to Madrid together with those of her husband, San Isidro Labrador, resting together in the Collegiate Church of San Isidro. At the foot of one of the arches, is what is said to have been her tomb.

Throughout time, its owners have been several. According to tradition, in the Middle Ages it belonged to the Temple, later coming to belong to the Archbishopric of Toledo. At that time, the Cistercian Order of Malacuera was commissioned to take charge of it, and it remained so until 1511, the year in which the Franciscans of Torrelaguna kept it. Around 1950, the III National Assembly of Brotherhoods declared it “National Sanctuary of Peasant Pilgrimage”, at which time it was decided that its reconstruction should take place, something that, however, was not carried out then. In 1976, it ceased to belong to the Church and was sold to an individual, which is its character today.

For centuries, every year a pilgrimage has been held in its surroundings in June.

Se trata del santuario mariano más antiguo de Madrid, ya que tiene su origen en época preislámica. De ella sólo han llegado a nuestros días sus ruinas y la casa del ermitaño del antiguo barrio visigodo de Caraquiz, en las afueras de la Villa.

Hoy podemos ver de ella su planta, de una única nave, en la que aún se conservan restos de iconostasio, así como parte de los muros y del arranque del ábside, y la espadaña, todo ello del siglo XVII.

El nombre de Santa María de la Cabeza le fue dado por el cuidado que esta santa tuvo con el templo cuando trabajaba en él y por su posterior santificación. De este modo, llegó a albergar en su interior sus restos cuando falleció hasta que en el siglo XVIII fueron trasladados a Madrid junto a los de su esposo, San Isidro Labrador, reposando juntos en la Colegiata de San Isidro. Al pie de uno de los arcosolios, se encuentra el que se dice que fue su sepulcro.

A lo largo del tiempo, sus dueños han sido varios. Según cuenta la tradición, en la Edad Media era propiedad del Temple, pasando posteriormente a pertenecer al Arzobispado de Toledo. En ese momento, se le encargó a la Orden del Císter de Malacuera que se hiciera cargo de ella, siendo así hasta 1511, año en que se la quedaron los franciscanos de Torrelaguna. Alrededor del año 1950, la III Asamblea Nacional de Hermandades la declaró “Santuario Nacional de Peregrinación Campesina”, momento en que se decidió que se llevara a cabo su reconstrucción, algo que, sin embargo, no llegó a realizarse entonces. En 1976, dejó de pertenecer a la Iglesia y fue vendida a un particular, siendo ese su carácter en la actualidad.

a bit of history:

I found this wonderful life size statue of Rae lying in peaceful repose next to a rifle and a book, inside the great St. Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall.

John Rae, a Scottish physician, explored the Canadian wilderness in the 1800's. He was the first European to survive an arctic winter by living in the manner of the native Inuit. He is also known for discovering the tragic fate of the Franklin Expedition that had disappeared some years previous trying to find a North passage. Rae did not get the immediate recognition he deserved as his report proved very unpopular. No one at that time wanted to believe that an Englishman would resort to cannibalism to survive.

Rae was employed by the "Governor and Adventurers of England Trading out of Hudson Bay." He eventually returned to Great Britain and is buried in his native home of Kirkwall in the Orkneys.

This is one of my favourite shots from the Ross series we're completing today. The sun is setting, but it always offers us the hope of a new dawn. And that is certainly the vision that we have seen Daniel Herbert had. Tomorrow can only be better if we make it that way.

I wanted those colourful sun flares to remind us that hope is the one thing that drives us on. A great modern German thinker, Jürgen Moltmann (who is 94 and still with us today), once wrote a "Theology of Hope". And this theme carried on throughout the rest of his numerous and inspiring books. In 2010 he wrote a book that linked God, Nature and hope and called it, "Sun of Righteousness, Arise! God's Future for Humanity and the Earth" (Fortress Press). It is a vision that might have inspired Daniel Herbert as well.

And so it is that as we come to the end of this series of Ross photographs, I have also decided to return us to the nature of this place on the banks of the Macquarie River. And as we go down those steps to the river, we are walking on holy stones. Carved by the convicts themselves, but sanctified by Life.

This is the last of my Vienna Georgia photos. Dooly county has many treasures and is rich with history. I choose this church because it can be seen from interstate I75. A local resident told me people from all over the world have stopped to take a photo. The church was organized in 1874 and began as a brush arbor with Rev. C. E. Boland as the first pastor. On September 1, 1883, one acre of land was deeded to the church by James T. Jackson.

Over the coming week I'll show you some of the marine reserve at Bicheno on Tasmania's east coast. It is a haven for sea birds of all kinds, seals and even whales out at sea. I'm told the diving here is extraordinary, with kelp forests underwater.

My title comes from a novel about young Australians heading off to war. Sadly, the world is in another precarious position with potential global conflict in both hemispheres. I won't go into the details - we are all too aware of them. This is humanity at its very worst! A predator species that feeds on itself (particularly its young men who go off to war). And such was the theme of David Malouf's brilliant novel called, "Fly Away Peter" (1982).

Young Jim Saddler is a bird watcher - particularly Queensland Sandpipers - and when WWI is declared he feels compelled to join up. The novel doesn't have a happy ending with Jim dying as he goes "over the top" of a trench on the Western Front. What a waste! And for what? Europe was plunged into war again within a generation.

Wars and rumours of wars, they seem to be with us always. But the beauty of David Malouf's work is the way he weaves the truly sanctifying aspects of Nature into the story. Nature redeems much of what we humans destroy. There's a lesson in that for us. If we don't learn our lesson soon the world would be better off without us.

Why all these gull pictures? First of all, winter has so little color I am not that interested in landscapes. I have a relatively new camera (Nikon Z6). I have been working on getting the focus system nailed down, It seems a bit finicky, but I have come to the conclusion it is a finely tuned instrument that needs to be understood correctly. Going to the river and working on getting the flying birds in focus in different lighting conditions has been a learning experience. Today, was my best day, I think about 80% of the photos I took were in focus to my sanctification. I want to get into some pet photography in the spring, and figure that if I can nail down decent focus on fast moving subjects like flying birds, I should not have too much problem getting a good percentage of my shots in focus for dogs, cats, and horses. Probably nobody will read this, but if you do, hope it helps.
