That bag they were holding was a very special bag.
The Pan Am booth is to promote the new ABC show of the same name. There is a faithful recreation of half of the First Class cabin. Passengers (Con attendees) needed to obtain a boarding pass for a "flight". Once it's time for your flight, you board the plane. There were two stewardesses (and yes I'm using the term stewardesses because they weren't dubbed flight attendants back in the hey day of Pan Am) inside the cabin escorting you to your seats, asking you to buckle up, etc. The windows on the opposite side of the aisle were screens showing a view from a plane window during take off, cruising, and landing. They announce that for the in-flight entertainment, you get a first look of the show.
The best part of the flight was that once the plane lands, the stewardess says, "We know you have many entertainment choices at Comic Con, we thank you for choosing Pan Am". I went on a flight three times and that joke never got old.
Anyways, once you deboard, you get a parting gift of a small duffle bag. However, if you're on a "special flight", before you deboard, the stewardess will instruct you to open up your tray table. And if you're in the lucky seat, a boarding pass will be in your tray table and you win that very nice travel bag. There were maybe 4-5 flights per hour, and not every flight was a special flight with a winning ticket. Only "a couple" were given out during the day, less than once per hour. A very hard bag to get.
I was on a flight Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Got two duffle bags, and on my third flight on Sunday, I won!
Easily one of this year's top three best con moments.
