The abbey was founded in 1150 by a small group of Cistercian monks in the commune of Flotte-en-Ré, a few metres from the sea. A few years later, the abbey became one of the largest and most powerful abbeys in the west of France. Indeed, it was one of the largest religious monuments of the time and a large part of the Ile de Ré was run by this monastery.
However, in 1294 the Abbey of the Châteliers was destroyed for the first time by the English before being rebuilt a few years later. Then came a succession of religious wars, including the Hundred Years' War, in which the abbey was once again the victim with part of its building destroyed again in 1388 and a few years later in 1462 with much more serious damage.
In 1990 the building was classified as a historical heritage site and in 1997 the abbey was renovated and secured by the General Council of Charente-Maritime. Today, the abbey is a cultural site open to the public.

On the western part of Newfoundland is Gros Morne Park, a world UNESCO site. In the park is Western Brook Pond.
It is a fjord built millions of years ago from glaciers. On each side are high cliffs and the center is the pond water. It is 16 kilometers long.
We took a tour boat through the fjord and it was spectacular.
A must see place to visit when going to Newfoundland on the west side.
There is a small coastal town.......just 5 mins by car from St. John's, Nfld. It is called Quidi Vidi. Pronounced 'kiddee viddee'.
After breakfast one morning I called a taxi to take me to this quaint small town. It is on the must see list if you go to St. John's.
...it was early....
...he said, I will take you to the most scenic spot that a lot of people don't know about......
...and he drove me up a hill...
...the early morning air was crisp and the sun shone.....
...he let me out at this spot......
...so beautiful..... all still with no breeze....
...and I sat on some wooden steps at the top of the hill, that brought one down to the shore...
... for half a hour.....
...as the sun slowly rose higher in the sky....
...and just let the moment seep in to my memories...
Beautiful place....Newfoundland...
Not my photo though I was standing immediately next to the photographer. But, I did quite a bit of processing. The artificial bokeh was added in my own camera, a Google Pixel 6 Pro, but the conversion and more was done at home on my computer.
It was the first day of my trip. I rented a car a drove from Deer Lake to Corner Brook....sunny and warm. The only warm day of the trip.
This is a picturesque church with pink summer roses framing it.
First lighthouse that I saw in beautiful Newfoundland. It was a cold day in June, 10C. Perfect Newfoundland weather.
Best viewed large to see the magnificent landscape of Western Newfoundland.
There are about 120,000 moose in Newfoundland.
Four moose were brought over to the lsland in 1904. And they multiplied! Not a lot of predators of moose on the island.
One must be very careful when driving as all the roads are dark, windy, hilly and a moose can just appear.
HBM!
I've made a cake that looks like spaghetti ice cream. Don't know if this ice cream is only a thing in Germany.
