Out and about in Winchester the day before Christmas Eve, I heard beautiful, soulful music but could not find its source. As I turned the corner, it seemed to be flowing from a public telephone box. Definitely puzzling.
And then I thought I saw somebody with a guitar IN the phone box. I walked over and saw a young guy playing and singing. As I usually do in such situations, I pointed to my camera and gave a questioning look. He nodded so I took a few very poor shots through the dirty glass.
Then I realised I would at least need a name if I had any hope of using this portrait in a strangers' project. So I loudly asked, "What's your name?" whereupon the young man opened the door of the phone box and told me he was Sam Brothers.
I described my project and asked if he would mind participating and if so, would he step just a bit further out of the box so I could get a better shot. Sam was happy to do this.
It may look, in my photo, as if Sam is about to pay me for the photography but in reality he was searching for his card to give me his details so I could send him a photo.
Sam told me that he is actually a serious musician but when he arrived to start his Christmas busking in the morning it was raining so he decided to have a bit of shelter.
He plays folk and blues and does gigs, playing in pubs and clubs, and plans to release a CD next year. He busks in Winchester and in Canterbury where he lives.
A rather unusual experience!

When Sam was in the bath yesterday I called for Justin to bring me my camera. "You don't have to take his picture everytime he takes a bath Laney!" Yes, dear, I know. But he's so cute in the bath now. He just gets so excited!
And I know I have a lot of pictures with this green towel, but I thought this was really sweet the way he was looking at me - and his little cute lips. I love that towel - such a great color.

Within some 40km of the town Jaisalmer in Rajasthan lies Sam Desert. Sam is not a separate desert out there but it is a part of the Thar Desert of Rajasthan. Even the main city of Rajasthan is built within the Thar Desert.
Sam is more or less a point, more of a sight seeing point from Jaisalmer.
The major attraction of Sam is its spectacular Sand Dunes. Standing on them you'll see dunes after dunes around you. A totally undulating hillocks if sands surrounds you. And I think it's a crime if someone does not get on a camel and ride through the dunes on them.
The best time to visit Rajasthan, specially Sam is from October to February when the weather is bearable during the day time. The best time to take a camel safari and roam through the desert is during sunrise or just before sunset. The rate of camel safari varies with season, but more or less it starts around 300 INR for a short ride and then if one wants to continue more, the rate is purely dependent on the concerned person's haggling ability.
One can stay in the desert also. During the busy tourist season many organizers set up tents in the desert and call them desert camps. Some of these camps have become permanent resorts. The tents are comfortable and many has modern facilities like attached toilet, hot water, etc for the comfort of the tourist. Usually staying in the camps are quite comfortable as they usually have a nice itinerary for their guests.
Typical itinerary at a desert camp:-
12.00PM - Check-in
1.00PM - Lunch
3.00PM-4.00PM - Start for camel safari, reach the sand dunes and stay as long as you want.
6.00PM - 8.00PM - Rajasthani folk music and dance/other cultural progam
8.00PM - 10.00PM - Dinner
Next Day check out after breakfast.
These desert camps typically charge between 2000 INR to 4000 INR depending on the season and demand. The charge includes staying in the hotel, lunch, evening snacks, dinner and breakfast. Every camp also charge a sum between 350 to 500 INR for the camel safari, folk dance, etc.
The Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) has a permanent resort in SAM in on of its best location called Sam Dhani( www.rtdc.in/samdhani.htm ). They charge INR 2500 for a single person and INR 2950 for two persons in non ac roooms. A room can accommodate maximum of two people. They have 10 tented accommodation as well as 10 rooms. Charges are same for both. Also RTDC charges 350 INR for the camel safari. It is one of the safest and best places to stay in SAM as per my experience. Only drawback is they do not perform the cultural show and dinner at the resort, but they organize the in collaboration with some neighboring resorts.

Just a Berner Sennen, one would think. Well, not quite. I've known many Berner Sennens, mostly obese, and neither very active, nor agile. Sam is slim, fast, agile, playful and can run amazingly fast.
