Centro Visitatori Nord.

North Visitors' Center.

Beginning in 1963, two visitors' centers, called the North Visitors' Center and the South Visitors' Center, were constructed on temple square.

The North Visitors' Center was built first and featured a replica of the Christus.

The Christus was in a room called the Rotunda with large windows, and a domed ceiling painted with heavenly bodies meant to reflect the sky on April 6, 1830, the day that the Church was founded.

The visitors' centers and grounds are staffed by full-time sister missionaries and senior missionary couples exclusively; no single male missionaries are called to serve on Temple Square.

The sister missionaries serving on Temple Square are from around the world, speaking enough languages to cater to the majority of visitors.

Beginning with the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, the sister missionaries have been wearing tags with the national flags of their home country along with their missionary name tags.

Salt Lake City, often abbreviated to Salt Lake or SLC, is the capital and most populous city in the U.S. state of Utah.

With a population of 200,134 as of the 2020 census, rising to 1,257,936 in the metropolitan area, it takes its name from the Great Salt Lake immediately northwest of the city.

The city was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young, Isaac Morley, George Washington Bradley, and many other Mormon followers, who extensively irrigated and cultivated the arid valley.

Due to its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, the city was originally called "Great Salt Lake City," with the word "Great" being dropped from its official name in 1868.

Although Salt Lake City is still home to the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, less than half of Salt Lake City's residents are members of the Mormon Church.

Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake City.

Before the Mormons settled, the Native American tribes of Shoshone, Ute, and Paiute had inhabited the Salt Lake Valley for thousands of years.

At the time of Salt Lake City's founding, the valley was within the territory of the Northwestern Shoshone, but was only occupied seasonally.

The land was treated by the United States as public domain, with no Shoshone title.

Emigration Canyon, Salt Lake City, Utah

This photo was taken with a Rokinon 8 mm lens on a D800. Although the distortion from this lens is not so pronounced when shooting landscapes, the distortion was pretty extreme here. It took a lot of processing to reduce the distortion to the levels seen in this image.

Any suggestions for further reducing the distortion would be appreciated :)

“No, this is not the beginning of a new chapter in my life; this is the beginning of a new book! That first book is already closed, ended, and tossed into the seas; this new book is newly opened, has just begun! Look, it is the first page! And it is a beautiful one!”

Salt Lake City's LDS Conference Center interior shot.

SLC, Utah. Temple Square.

Photographer's Backstory: This is obviously a fisheye shot using a full frame camera with a circular fisheye lens. I planned the shot early one morning when I knew no one would be around in order to shoot straight up at the rotunda dome. I suddenly heard lots of little voices and footsteps as I was setting up the camera and thought "...well, so much for that." After another moment's thought, I figured maybe I could incorporate the elementary school class into the photo and after some discussion with the teacher, they agreed. The phrase "...like herding cats" comes as I remember the setup. Once it was ready to go and everyone was positioned, I set the self timer and got as far out of the shot as possible. Just before the timer went off, the teacher said, "...look up class!" totally altering the face views of the students that I wanted. Another setup was out of the question---like herding cats as I mentioned---so this is the result, a class full of kids with a nice view of them looking up.
