Although this guy was very good at catching fish, he just has that expression that he is pleased with himself. Happy Bear With Me Monday.
Loch Faskally (Scottish Gaelic: Loch Faschoille) is a man-made reservoir in Perth and Kinross, Scotland, 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) northwest of Pitlochry.
The loch lies between steeply wooded hills and is approximately 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi) in length, narrowing to around 700 metres (770 yd) wide. The loch is retained by the Pitlochry Dam which was built by Wimpey Construction between 1947 and 1950 as part of the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board's Tummel Hydro-Electric Power Scheme. The dam incorporates a salmon fish ladder, allowing around 5,400 salmon to ascend annually, and is a popular visitor attraction.
The loch is popular with anglers. The water holds a good head of brown trout and the native fish are augmented by a stocking in the 1-5lb range. A 7-pounder was recorded in 2001. Salmon and a few sea trout pass through as they head up the Tummel and Garry systems. 54 salmon were caught in 2001 the best being a fish of 14 ½ lbs, however fish to 28lbs have also been caught. June also sees the arrival of the summer grilse.
There are also good numbers of small pike with a few larger specimens mixed in. The best recorded pike have been over 30lb.
Kokanee Salmon is a landlocked species of the Sockeye Salmon. They are both silver for most of their life. When they are ready to spawn the sliver gradually turn to red, males turn very bright red and develop a distinctive hump, females turn pinkish red. They die after spawning.
Not the best picture from a technical standpoint, but one of my favorite serendipity shots of the trip. Imagine the thrill of realizing I was getting the bear with a salmon in his mouth being watched by a Bald Eagle - a heavenly cliche for sure!!! HCS

The Capliano Salmon Hatchery, located on the Capilano River in Capilano River Regional Park, is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. Admission to this popular attraction, is free.
Depending on the season, you may see juvenile salmon and trout in the display aquaria or mature returning salmon in the fish ladder. Be sure to visit the “Fishway” in the observation gallery, where you can see how salmon climb the fish ladders by jumping from one pool to the next. It’s truly exciting for children and adults alike!
The fish hatchery interpretive centre has a self-guided tour where you can learn about and see fish develop from eggs to the juvenile stage when they are released to the river in spring. It’s a colourful and fascinating process.

An Osprey is shaking off water and dirt while keeping a firm grip on the Kokanee Salmon.
The background here looks very much like fall colors and foliage. Although there were some foliage in the scene, the large parts were bare ground and debris. The affect was created by the characteristics of a super telephoto lens.
The annual salmon run that takes place in September and early October has been in full swing the last week of September. The Chinook and Coho Salmon that have been feeding in our Great Lakes since they migrated down the rivers are returning upriver to spawn and create new life by laying eggs and fertilizing them to fulfill their purpose in life.
This male Chinook (I believe) is about 3 feet long and probably weighs about 30 pounds has moved into some shallower water in the Ganaraska River as he propels himself toward the spawning grounds. A fish ladder has been installed at the Corbet Dam in the Ganaraska River so these salmon can navigate around the dam and complete their spawning migration.

Puerto Montt is a port city and commune in southern Chile, located at the northern end of the Reloncaví Sound in the Llanquihue Province, Los Lagos Region, 1,055 km to the south of the capital, Santiago. The commune spans an area of 1,673 km2 (646 sq mi) and had a population of 238.455 in 2012. Founded as late as 1853 during the German colonization of southern Chile, Puerto Montt soon outgrew older neighboring cities due to its strategic position at the southern end of the Chilean Central Valley being a gateway city into Chiloé Archipelago, Llanquihue Lake and Western Patagonia.
Puerto Montt has gained renown and grown significantly due to the rise of Chile as the second largest salmon producer of the world during the 1990s and 2000s. The city's cultural heritage mixes elements of Chiloé culture with German heritage although the city has attracted a significant number of newcomers from all over Chile in the last 30 years due to employment opportunities from salmon fish farms and related industries.
Meet 'Simplicity Pink', a floribunda rose.
Growing profusely - right now in mid winter - at the Swanes Rose Nursery in Dural (northern Sydney)
Photographed on Monday 24th June, 2024.
'Simplicity Pink' is bred by William A. Warriner (United States, 1976). It was introduced to the United States by Jackson & Perkins Roses in 1979 as 'Simplicity'. In Australia it is called 'Simplicity Pink'.
I love visiting the Swanes Rose Nursery here in the Hills District of Sydney (490 Galston Road, Dural) beause it is quite close to home at Castle Hill. Only a 20 minute drive. And the roses at the moment are in a winter frenzy of blooming. Quite strange in a way, because in the past, by late June the roses would be coming to the end of their Autumn flourish. But not now. You should see them.
AND the best feature of Swanes Nursery, apart from the extensive rose gardens, is the brilliant 'Green Vibes' cafe with its new owner & chef. Awesome coffee and superb home-made Thai-style salmon fish cakes. Excellent before OR after your rose expedition. See:

A salmon jumps out of the ocean in the Inner Passage of Alaska. I noticed that some of the salmon in the water would randomly push themselves out of the water. It was difficult to predict when a salmon would come out. As soon as I saw a splash or fin at the top of the water, I pointed my lens toward it, and hoped for a shot like this. If you look carefully, there is a bite mark on its side. I wonder if a seal tried to catch it?
A big black bear was walking the far edge of a small river and I went a ways down river to try to get a good vantage point with a decent background for when it walked by. What I got instead was the bear charging at high speed out into the water to grab a salmon. Between me and the bear was a tree. I pushed the shutter anyway and kept on shooting, hoping it would come out into the open. This was as clean a shot as I could get. 10m back the way I came from would visually have been head on with the charge.
Focus was a bit off and overall image quality was a bit off. But a fisherman should show off the big fish they catch, and maybe even exaggerate about the size. Since the bear didn't have a social media account, I thought I would post the pic on its behalf just to show off how big that salmon was. Judging it against the bear, you know it was an impressive size.
The bear is likely a Vancouver Island sub-species, Ursus americanus vancouveri, which is generally a bit bigger than those on the mainland. Given the size of the fish, it is possibly a Chinook (aka King) salmon. I'm sure the bear enjoyed it thoroughly.
I've been charged by bears, but this wasn't one of those moments. Georgina, the World's Coolest Bear, has her mind on salmon - as usual. If that foreground rock were not in the way, we probably could see the frantic salmon splashing to get out of her sightline. The salmon are quick, but here, near their spawning beds, the shallow water gives them little chance of escaping once seen by a bear. Their best bet is to slip past unnoticed.
Yesterday's shot of this bear catching a Pink Salmon made Explore, but I would not rank it among my best. Much better shots have slipped past, unnoticed, like a spawning salmon. I vastly prefer soft light, as seen here, to bring out the nuances in that black fur.

a juvenile grizzly bear with a salmon, although there are plenty of fish the grizzly siblings were struggling for each bite,so no wonder this guy was looking for a calm spot to feed, Bute Inlet, BC
This Alaska Grizzly is preparing for another season of hibernation by consuming this salmon and many more at Brooks Falls. Predation can be tough to watch and photograph but this is raw nature and I want to capture it.
