Enjoy drift boat fishing on the world renowned Salmon River in Pulaski NY for hard fighting salmon or steelhead during the splendor of the fall, winter and spring seasons.
Whether it's trophy sized steelhead or salmon that you're after, I am dedicated to introducing both new and experienced anglers to the exciting world of freshwater fishing.
For novices, I place emphasis on Fly/Spin fishing skill and supplement the day with knots, fly/bait selection, fish habitats, and prey species. For the more experienced sportsman, I'll work with you to hone your fishing skills. I guarantee a rewarding experience.
I have a firm belief 100 % of my energy and time should be focused on you and helping you attain your goals, during our time together and not fishing along side you during this time.
I am a thoroughly proficient and professional year-round fly/spin fishing guide with 35 + years of fresh and salt water experience.
At 16 feet, my 285 pound guide drift boat is comfortable and a very stable platform . It is outfitted with a propane heater to keep you nice and toasty on even the coldest days. While you can Spin or Fly fish from the drift boat, I will often stop to let clients wade and fish a particularly productive run on the Salmon River NY. When the Steelhead or Salmon are concentrated in particular locations wading is the preferred option. At other times a drift boat is the only way to get to the fish. While I will give booking anglers a recommendation, you may want to experience one method over another. All you have to do is ask.
I'm a full-time professional fly/spin fishing guide with over 35 years of experience.
During the Fall, Winter, and Spring I run drift boat trips on the World Class Salmon River, Pulaski N.Y. using fly/spin and floats for Steelhead, Brown Trout, Coho, Atlantic's and King Salmon.

September through April
The Salmon River is located in Pulaski NY on Lake Ontario's eastern shore, 30 miles north of Syracuse. Its reputation for large runs of Salmon, Steelhead and incredible average size of all species is unsurpassed by any other fishery in New England.
September 1 - October 30
Tackle busting King Salmon averaging 10-20 lbs. will amaze you with their freight train runs. Trying to harness the raw power of a 12 lb Coho Salmon running in 20 different directions in a blink of an eye will keep you on your toes (and hopefully not on your back!)
October 15 - November
Brown Trout. Like Salmon and Steelhead you measure these Fish by the pound and not by the inch. They have entered the river to spawn and will weight from 3-10 pounds. While they are not as numerous as the Salmon or the Steelhead, these are an optional trophy of a Fishing life time.
October 20 - May 1
Steelhead 8-15 lbs. The Fall Steelhead is without a doubt, one of the hardest fighting Fish that swims in the Salmon River NY. They'll take you into your backing in seconds, then jump start your heart with tail walking antics that will live in your memory forever.
Winter - This is one of my favorite Drift Boat Guide Fishing times of the year. With colder temperatures the crowds disappear. Steelhead continue to come into the river from the lake. A winter Drift Boat trip aboard our heated Drift Boat is a great way to learn the river and experience it's beauty.
The end of February, March and April are great Steelhead Fishing days as new Fish move into and out of the river on a daily basis. As the river temperatures rise, so does the aggressiveness of the Steelhead. Often, sight fishing is possible as they move into the shallows.
We can Spin or Fly Fish for Salmon or Steelhead either by wading or using the Drift Boat..
I invite you to join me and enjoy what is an unquestionably one of the finest fresh water fisheries in the eastern United States.

Randy, I just wanted to thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge to make our trip an unbelievable experience for us. With me having 8 to 9 hookups, and my friend Tim with somewhere between 5 to 6 that is more fish on in a single day than some people have for an entire season. I'm a true believer in that hot spot on "Pucker Brush Creek :)
As a matter of fact Tim and I went back on our own the next day and the fish were there waiting for us just like you said they would be. Again we had a combined count of over 10 hookups and Tim had the hot hand that day with his 6 weight fly rod. Our only regret was that we did not have enough days left to explore some of the other high percentage areas you showed us as we had to go back to work sometime.
Who says old dogs can't learn new tricks?:) Tim and I have been coming up there for over 15 years, and yet we still learned a few valuable lessons from you, thanks again. I'm just sorry that the season is almost winding down, definitely want to get back up there for another trip.
I would highly recommend you to anyone, beginner or experienced steelheader, it's the combination of little things and techniques that make all the difference in the world. Feel free to pass on my contact information if you need any references for anglers, I would be more than happy to vouch for your professionalism, knowledge, and stream courtesy to fellow anglers anytime.
Thank You, Ted
Randy,
Every time I go fishing, the optimist in me says "This might be the day." Athletes pray for days like this, hoping they play in "the zone." I think fishermen do too. Surely, this is what keeps many of us thrashing the water with a piece of string. I can count on one hand the number of days when this has happened. Two of them have been with you. The first was two years ago today, Oct. 8, when I hooked 40 or 50 fish, including a 35 lb male king that now sits above my fireplace as an reminder of that one remarkable day of fishing. The other was last Friday. Not only did I land a pair of nice Kings, I also caught my first Cohos, a beautiful male brown and three fall run steelhead, my first grand slam on the Salmon River. All told, I had maybe 20 hookups, while my buddy Myles had almost as many and landed cohos, a brown and several steelhead. It wasn't as if this was a great day on the river. I saw many long faces and shaking heads as other anglers came up empty, lost lead and flies to the river bottom and called it quits by midday. The credit for my experience is all yours. I know there are many fishermen who can work the Salmon River and catch plenty of fish, especially when a run is on. I can do it on my own sometimes. But putting it all together when the fishing is slow as you did is a testimony to your skill, knowledge and hard work. Looking forward to my next trip with you and the chance to yell "Fish On"!
Regards, Jim
Thanking you for your many kind and generous words! My head almost didn't fit thru the front door after those :) Randy

Complementary Guide Tip and Lesson for the week:
Non-transitional Prime holding - Approx. 20-30% of these steelhead are in the heat, while 70-80% have moved into the Winter lyes. (Hint - Water temp. approx. 40 degrees)
All hab's producing.
1. When the Steelhead are running, fish there temporary transitional resting points as they make there way up the river. Otherwise, you are fishing to fish that are not stopping, decreasing your odds greatly, in my opionion.
2. Once they stop to hold for the remainder of the day, fish these prime transitional holding waters. (Approx. 15% of steelhead that are in the river system)
3. Find these prime non-transitional holding places in the river all Winter, and just fish those. After all, they aren't going anywhere soon. (Approx. 85% of steelhead that are in the river system)
-
Be glad it wasn't you - Funny Story:
A guide friend told me that Friday in the early morning darkness he was walking in the moving river water to place his drift boat anchor in the "hot spot." He unfortunately did what I call a superman dive (arms out in front and legs out behind) and fell in the water, getting the normal and much cherished "Salmon River Baptism.". He said he had water pouring into his waders and was wet from his ear's to the tips of his toes. He was wet, but ok. Later in the morning as some of us bank anglers (I might add, we were ALL hitting steelhead) on the bank were watching his client try to land a big steelhead we noticed a steady plume of black smoke rising from his drift boat heater. Coupl'a of the guys yelled to him that something was on fire in his boat. Turns out, that in his haste to try to net his clients fish, some how his rubber oar handle ended up on his heater and started to burn and melt? Never a dull moment on this river

Incredible weather and water level
This weekend will be cwaaaazy bizzy w/ anglers. Great for the local economy! I noticed a increase in anglers fishing on Friday. Why?
1. Nice air temperatures. No blizzards forecast, so all the fair weather anglers will be out.
2. The word has gotten out about ALL the Steelhead that are around.
3. Most anglers stayed away from the 1,500 cfs plus, water flows and have been waiting for the water to drop to a level that they are more familiar and comfortable with.
4. Economy doing well.
-
Why will this Dec. be a banner steelhead Month?
Lot's of steelhead around, lot's of anglers will be busy with family - Biz. holiday obligations, hunting, warm - fair weather anglers will be putting their skirts on for the Winter (yukyuk) only a few of us "Full - Time" Guides will be working. Offering you more fishing opportunities. Fish On and On and On, Baby!!!

I'd like to fish my good friend and client Dick Koelling a speedy recovery from a recent stroke.
Dick's been out w/ me 100 times on the Salmon River for Kings, Coho's, Brown's and Steelhead. (We've even done a few "Grand Slam's")

Steelhead Fishing Report that came from last years Nov. Archives:
I thought you might enjoy it as its exactly what we are experiencing now on the river and is basically a repeat of the above report. Funny how after 30 plus years of guiding, nothing reeeeeelly ever changes that much.

Complementary Tips:
Steelhead top to bottom of river with fresh Chrome entering daily. Running the river spreading out. All Fall Spots still producing.
With the water temperature around 40 degrees, we are seeing some of the residents transferring into their Winter lyes.
It's approx. 30% Fall spots, 30% Winter spots and 30% inbetween. All Transitional holding, resting and Prime holding water is hold'n.
Every type of habitat is producing. The entire river is producing. You can find them almost anywhere presently.
Even heard reports of a few fresh Kings and Coho Salmon in the river.
Best of luck to you all!
-
This last week we played with on average 10 to 14 Steelhead daily. On 1 day, my one guest w/ a fly rod hit 18 Steelhead!
Another day my 2 very experienced spin clients played w/ over 20!! Ye-Haa!
Had what I call a DAY for KINGS!
-
For the first 2 hour's skunk, nothing, nada, not even a sucker in a spot where the steelhead had been loaded the day before. I started to chain smoke, chew tobacco and put on a nicotine patch. (kidding) Glad I gave up drinking. (har-har) I was getting nervous. I knew that most of these Steelhead were residents who had set up shop in this prime lye. But, where were they? I pulled anchor and guessed with the water temperature dropping they were all just a lil lower in the deeper, less current habitat. I was right!
We HAMMERED over 20 Steelhead with my 2 very experienced Steelhead guest's! One after the other! Darn, I love this job!
-
The previous day I had the luxury to be able to move the driftboat around freely and fish different prime area's. We had approx. 18 Steelhead on that day with 1 guest useing a fly rod!
-
Egg sack's, hot shoting (plugging w/ drift boat), beads and flies are all producing daily. The wade - shore anglers are having a lot of success also. It's always nice to share the fish, water and see other's out enjoying this incredible fishery w/ success!
-
I would highly recommend coming up to do some Steelhead fishing.
-
From the Mail Bag:
Randy I would appreciate your thoughts regarding what is the appropriate "line" to use for the butt section of the fly leader when fishing for steelhead. I use 12 pound clear mono between the floating fly line and barrel swivel and then fluorocarbon for a tippet. But I also observe others using a dark brown line for this section and referred to as "chameleon". Not sure if it makes a difference, but the darker color leader is claimed to be an advantage during bright sunny days; less reflection off the line. Thus the late day activity I experienced Wednesday may not be the result of warmer water temperature, but less sunlight to reduce the reflection (or it could have been a push of steelhead entering the tailout). Thanks. Dick.
-
HI Dick,
The brown mono is Maxima. Some guides use it exclusively, even for leaders or tippets to fly, bait.
It breaks approx. 1 -1/2 lb/s more than what it is rated for. (Please see my Links-The Very Best page for the best in Mono and Fluorocarbon, it all breaks at what its rated for and is also what most of the tournament anglers use around the world for all species. Its also used by many for any local, regional, national, world record hold'rs)
Blends in with a dark bottom river. Never thought about reflective qualities, hmmm.
For traditional fly casting a tapered leader transfer's the energy the best.
I just use clear 10-12 lb. straight mono for butt.
An 8 lb. mono straight butt is less current - water resistance than heavier - Diameter, so you will get into the strike zone quick'r and stay longer. Also feel the bottom better.
But, a good snag will sometimes break it, so keep an eye on it. Thats why I use a 10-12 lb. Less knot tying and lost total rig's.
Clients spend more time fishing and less time waiting on me to tie all those knots. Also, my hands stay warmer when its cold .
Best Fish's,
Randy

A Sampling of Fishing Reports from some of last month's Steelhead trips on the Salmon River in Pulaski NY:
I think I canceled or rescheduled more trips last month due to unsafe and uncomfortable (driving here and fishing) weather (wind chill) than I actually worked. Thats normal and I'd rather have you be comfortable and safe than take any chances of a driving accident getting here or going home, frost bite while fishing or anything else. For this guide, you come first, before the almighty dollar :)
-
One of my better trips recently:
My 2 guest's experienced their first time Steelhead fishing. They came back amazed at the numbers of fish we played with but most importantly, the knowledge they gained. For them, the fish were second to achieving a rock solid Steelhead fishing foundation on which to build. That was their main goal, to which we succeeded! I think we played with about 10-11 Steelies for the day. Just icing on the cake. :)
-
My slowest trips recently:
My 2 guest's were VERY VERY experienced. We had three or four on and off reeeel quick. One that pulled hard and fast before breaking off. And landed One. Ouch! Never know :)
-
Hit Steelhead in 3 out of 5 spots today. Played with about 8 total for the day. The 2 spots we didn't hit any fish in were only fished for about 5-10 minutes.
Im sure there were fish there, and we would have found some if we had stayed longer, but we were only looking for some McDonald's fish. (Fast and easy:)
-
My guest's from yesterday decided to fish a 1/2 day instead of our full because of the impending sleet, snow, rain and lot's of freezing rain in the forecast. They got out of town before it really hit which made me feel better.
In our 1/2 days fishing we tangled with 5 Steelhead. Not bad! Yesterday we went on a Nantucket sleigh ride. We gave chase in the boat and were surrounded with a very narrow river, fast water, log jam's, fish running under the boat in about every direction, boulders, fish moving from one side of the boat to the other, my oar blades, rapids, tree's, you name it. We had to zig and zag our way through this obstacle course with a mad and dashing Steelhead on. Pheeew! Finally that steelhead had had enough and gave up. It was netted nicely off the side of the drift boat as we drifted down the river. Talk about a Chinese fire drill! It would have been a hilarious show to watch as I tried to run the oar's, anchor, missing all the obstacles and net while keeping everyone safe and upright in the boat all at once. :)
What a fight, what an adrenaline rush, DAM, I love this job!
-
Winter Steelhead Fishing Tip:
The fish today in one Winter holding pool did not want any natural looking aquatic insect flies and would ONLY hit glow bug's in pink and cream. (We did not try bait or any other egg colors) In a transitional holding spot they only wanted the aquatics.
After working the entire hole with aquatics with no bites? I tied on a glow bug in Pink and on the first cast, it was hammered "Fish On", Baby! The second rod doubled over in the hole within 5 minutes of changing to a cream glow bug. Boy, it sure pay's to have a pretty good understanding of entomology and baitology on this river. It also paid dividends to be able to listen to what the fish were telling us related to their eating habit's and adjust. I knew we had a minimum of 10-15 steelhead in this spot that wanted nothing to do with our insect fly offering. By paying close attention, we were able to fool a couple before pulling the anchor. 2 more fish came from the next transitional lye before calling it a day. :)
-
Slow day today - Played with a coupe of fish. Worked on presentation most of the day. Nobody on the river today due to the ice forecast last night and this morning. Not bad at all. Very comfortable and no ice to deal with.
-
Winter Steelhead Fishing Tip: Ice in your guides?
The best stuff to use is either silicone spray or Ice Off Paste, sold at most tackle shops. Whitakers has it. Works on both fly and spin rods. The paste works the best if you put it on the night before. Re-apply as needed while fishing.
-
My guest today had 4-5 goals that we wanted to achieve. A better, complete, expert analysis and understanding of flies, tying flies, reading water, presentation, Steelhead strategies, rigging, how does the lower and higher water effect the fish, were do the fish lay in all the holes, high water current breaks, where to stand in every hole, how to access each hole, advanced rigging and presentation, stream etiquette, where to cross the river safely, how to rig and present a fly-bait while sight fishing to the Bucks in the Spring, Spring strategies, Winter strategies, where to find the Bucks in the Spring and lastly and least important were to catch fish.
Ken only had 4-5 goals but I covered all of the above and much more. This is a normal day for me. We hit some fish while completely and thoroughly achieving all of Kens goals plus some! :)
We spent time in each and every hole over a 3 mile distance. Approx. 40 or more spot's. (Boy, my throat was sore at days end from all the talking, nice change from the usual :)
We saw fish with the help of todays sun. Saw a fair number of fish that were in a transitional state, moving up the river and briefly holding in the transitional lyes.

Salmon River NY Fishing Mail Bag: Guest Testimonial
Randy, Just a note of thanks for our day of fishing. I've returned several times since and have hooked a lot of steelhead each time out. I've been working on my fly patterns and have some I really like - I'm looking forward to having my son, Daniel, fish with you in a couple years. That will be a great day for me to take pictures. Hal Fuller.
-
Randy, Thanks for all the help yesterday and the sight fishing adventure. Went back to the hole you showed me and 3rd cast, landed a 7lb female. Got her on a fly that you showed me and that I changed a little. Overall an awesome day! Thanks again. Ken

Salmon River Pulaski NY Jan. 1 Steelhead Fishing Report:
Even though Im on vacation, I wanted to share with all of you what happened today in a 2 hour period while fishing the lower river. Looked over the short bridge for slush and was happy to see that it was clearing up. I met Ray at 10 A.M. in the D.S.R. parking lot and broke trail to the stairs. Noticed that a number of deer and turkey had already packed the snow down for us.
Went directly to some prime Chrome real estate and on my 3rd cast with an orange egg sack on 6lb. test tippet my line stopped in the middle of the drift and the rod began to shake. Hhhmmm- I wonder what this means. Turns out it was a very bright, fresh, Steelhead of about 8 lb's. Ray missed one and I hit nothing for the next half hour with eggs, noticed fish porpasing in the hole as will as fish rolling off our main line. We left for the --- hole.
-
As we walked across the river we noticed the water was a bit deeper and running a tad faster than a normal 285 cfs. Due to the shelf ice on the edges of the river and anchor ice on the bottom the water flow was actually being concentrated or compressed.( Please keep this in mind when wading the lower river) Another safety tip to remember is that beneath the shelf ice that you are standing on, it could be knee deep or deeper, so it pays to know your water. Ray who is pictured above is on shelf ice that is over thigh deep water.
At the edge of the ice it's over your waist. How do I know? ( We will save that story for another time!)
-
With-in a couple of the first few cast's I had another one on. This one again was so bright that I was glad I had my sunglasses on to keep the suns reflection off the silvery sides of the steelhead from blinding me. The biggest problem we had (if you can call it that) was how to land a fish when you were restricted from approaching the edge of the shelf ice. Nether of us carried a net so we finally broke away at the ice in the tail so that we might have a shot at landing one.
-
After a I hooked a couple more, Ray asked what pound test I was using. Turns out that Ray was fishing a little heavier than me and when he dropped down on his 3rd cast his rod went a shaking!
-
Ray lands an 8 lb. male with a nice hooked jaw. (Fish was released) Ray got his on a pink egg sack.
-
From the -- Hole down it's locked up tight with shelf ice and unfishable.
-
It always pays to experiment with all aspects of you rigging, egg sack colors, flies, etc. Orange and Pink were the productive colors of our egg sacks today. I could not get a touch on the normally productive blue goo.
-
By noon, the sun was out and it had warmed to what seemed to be the warmest it's been in a month. (30 degrees ?) We were both actually over dressed for these temp's, if you can believe that. It was interesting that as the temp's rose, so did the amount of anchor ice floating on the surface of the water. It made the fishing impossible so we both left after 2 hours of fishing and the knowledge we had gained. In 2 hours and 2 holes fished, I had 6 fish on and could of landed 4 with a net.. I'm not bragging, but this is what you can expect when you time it just right and the fish gods smile upon you.
Stay tuned,
Randy

1/24 Salmon River Pulaski NY Steelhead Drift Boat Guide Fishing Report:
Our main goal today was to learn all the prime holding waters of the D.S.R. (Lower River). After we hit our 3rd fish in a row out of a small depression in the bottom of the river, I told Andy that since he wanted to learn all the holes we should leave this spot. He changed his mind real quick and decided a few more fish would be an O.K. exchange for learning a few more holes. So we stayed and hooked up another real quick. (He-he) and then it was off for more fun and excitement.
Today we fished hard, only hitting the most productive lies in 285 cfs.
Very light fishing pressure. Did notice a big lack of fish in this area compared to the month of Dec. Most fish have pushed out, up river with a few freshies trickling in daily.
Andy and I had a blast having almost the entire river to ourselves. Not only did Andy learn a lot, but also got into some reeeeeeel burners, too!
-
Andy works the lil -- hole down to -- and is 3 for 6 for the day. All dime bright freshies! ( All fish Released )

1/25 Salmon River NY Steelhead Drift Boat Guide Fishing Report:
Same ol same hole - nothing has changed from the last few post's. The fish ( Steelhead 8-12 lb's) are in and waiting for you. Middle to lower river holding the most. D.S.R. has cooled off.
Come on up and join us, wont you?

Guest Steelhead Fishing Testimonial:
Randy,
Thank you for a truly great outing. Basically, I knew nothing about the river - in previous trips would usually end up somewhere in Altmar, following other fishermen around like a sheep. Now, I feel confident that I can approach the river with a strategy and a technique that will at least afford me the opportunity to identify and access "fishy" water and present my fly to fish for as long and as naturally as possible. Additionally, we studied numerous slots and runs that I never would've even considered stumbling around on my own. As I learned, it really is as precise as fitting a key into a lock.
-
I cannot stress enough how invaluable this experience was, from the standpoint of a guy that lives a couple hours away, and simply cannot devote the time necessary to develop on my own a comfort level with such a complex fishery.
I hope you will be able to find some room for me in March...I promise it will take me less than half a day to figure out that "straight out in front of you" means straight out in front of me.
-
By the way, I think I pulled my hamstring sprinting after that last fish. Thanks again.
Andy (See 1/24 Report)

Salmon River Pulaski NY Steelhead Drift Boat Guide Spin Fly Fishing Report Update:
Every normal type of habitat for this time of year, fish's life cycle, water flow, current breaks, water temperature is with Steelhead and Brown Trout from the top of the Salmon River to the bottom. There literally there is no bad place to fish presently.
The simplest way to explain this is everyday of late, as I drift down the river in the boat, every single spot is producing fish, top to bottom of the river! Ye-Haa!!
My guest's were in the 10% of the anglers that catch 90% of the Steelhead twice last week, with the other two days being ok #'s. The 2 ok average #'s of steelhead were attributed to the fish being in a transitional stage and being more spread out from the heat to the deeper pools.

Rick (son of dad Dick K. photo'd below) w/ an exciting steelhead. Congrats!!

Guess we just got lucky this week ;)
Monday - Enjoyed my first scheduled day off in the last few month's.
-
Tuesday - 500 cfs - My 2 guest's landed 3 steelhead (6-8-12 lb'r) out of 9 total played with!
My new guest was visually shaking with excitement and adrenaline racing up his spine after fighting and landing his first ever steelhead. He said, Randy, this is the BEST fishing day of my life! I smiled in return and remembered fondly my first fish on the Salmon River and the excitement of it all.
We captured the entire fight and landing of this steelhead on video. It was fun to watch and listen to it in replay as we slowly drifted down the river in the drift boat on "The River, where Memories are Made."
-
Wed.
6 reeeeeeeeel scream'n drag's singing the fisherman's national anthem steelhead were played with today off the .com drift boat by my two guest's. Just another day at the office.
-
Thurs.
Had to work hard for every fish and we picked away at them. Noticed less fish in the heat then previous days, the fish are transitioning to the Winter lyes. Water temp. was approx. 40 degrees.
We tied into 4 steelhead today - Father and son sharing a qaulity day of fond fishing memories and fun.
Tyler took about 5-6 pictures of his dad's Trophy Steelhead that he kept for the dinner table. I suggested that w/ the holidays just around the corner he could make a photo colleague framed picture and make it into a holiday gift for his dad to hang on the wall.
-
Friday
Noticed MOST of the bank anglers having success in ALL the normal spots. Bent rods, scream'n reels, smiles and laughter abound! I'd recommend coming over, up or down to fish.
I'm seeing about 75% bright silver steelhead and approx. 25% darker steelhead. They darken a tad once they have been in the river 3-4 weeks. Thats how you can tell how fresh or old they are.
Changed fishing strategy today, listened to the fish and was rewarded w/ an amazing 14 steelhead tangled with for my first timers. They flew in from the West coast where they fish a lot. They had always heard story's about this place and decided to give a fishing try. They were not disappointed. I think we well be seeing them again.

Monster Salmon pulls angler into Salmon River!
Reprinted with permission - Syracuse Gazette, Chatham, N.Y. - Mike Cilly- Outdoors Writer
Guide Randy Jones risks his own safety by attempting to lasso a client with net to keep him from being dragged into river by monster fish.
Wayland is tied into a monster Salmon that by size more resembled the Loch Ness monster than the usual autumn King. Wayland yelled, "Help Randy, I've got a monster on here and its pulling me into the river." (best to imagine this panicked cry done in a Scottish brogue) "I canna' hold 'er much longer Cap'n. HELP!"
In my attempt to keep Wayland from being pulled into the river by this world record Salmon, with no thoughts for my own safety and well-being, I threw the net over his head. Unfortunately the fish was too strong and my guest too weak from the battle. Despite my best efforts to save him, all was lost when suddenly my net handle broke! In went Wayland into the deep, angry white water rapids. He did a perfect belly flop but still managed to hang onto the rod.
As one eyewitness reported later, "Between the strong deep currents and this beast of a fish, all we could see was his rod tip sticking out of the water by a foot as it started downstream." Witnesses fishing further down reported that Wayland was able to briefly gain his feet for a short time and ski behind the demonic salmon. However, it appeared that after skiing over several large boulders he lost his footing on an old roe sack discarded by a bait fisherman and resumed his submerged journey. Last sightings reported seeing his baseball cap surrounded by little tiny bubbles headed at a high-rate of speed towards the open water of Lake Ontario.
As a professional guide of the highest moral and ethical standards, I am extremely worried about this situation involving my former client.
Therefore, if anyone finds a old gaffer in a water-logged ball cap zipping around the river tight to a monster Salmon but still with his tip up, please email...I would like to get my net back.

Flattering Drift Boat Fishing Testimonial's for Steelhead and Salmon Guide Randy Jones on the Salmon River NY
-
To quote a Drift Boat Guide that I know, our trip yesterday was O U T S T A N D I N G, in every sense of the word. Although I live just an hour away from the Salmon River NY, I have only fished the Salmon River in Pulaski NY for four years. I feel very comfortable with my Salmon "catching" expertise, but the elusive Steelhead is a different story. I am still at the low end of the learning curve when it comes to chromers. Yesterday we made some major progress on the learning curve, correcting some things I was doing wrong, and fine tuned some other points. PLUS we hit ten Steelhead and landed two. When "out of staters" come to the Salmon River NY, they have to pack a whole season into two or three days---well, yesterday, I packed a whole season of experiences, thrills of victory and the agony of losing a 16# Steelhead at the net in one very enjoyable, eight hour Guide Drift Boat trip down the Salmon River Pulaski NY. I appreciate your patience, guidance, and sense of humor.
Thank you for an outstanding day.
-
Randy,
What a great day, just when I thought I knew a little something about steelhead fishing I had to fish with you. You really are a class act. I really appreciate you sharing your expertise and patience as well as some of your "honey" holes with me. I would encourage any steelhead fisherman, novice or expert, to fish with a guide even if it's just once, and if they can get Drift Boat Guide Randy Jones they're in for a great day. There is so much to learn about this sport and you can trim years off the "learning curve" by fishing with a real pro such as yourself. Thanks again for the fun and truly a learning fishing experience. And thanks for not mentioning that "hog" that snuck through the hole in your net.

Quality Fishing Testimonial for the Salmon River NY catching Steelhead or Salmon with Drift Boat Guide Randy Jones
-
It may be difficult to understand the term World Class Fishing until you have been there. But perhaps this will help!
-
Randy,
Thank you for several memorable trips this year on the Salmon River NY. The highlight of the year was definitely the outing on the Salmon River during September. Never have I experienced such numbers of large and aggressive Salmon in all my 45 years of fishing. I estimate we had over 60 hook-ups on King Salmon and caught and released 12, two of which were between 30 and 35 pounds. Close behind was the spring drift boat trip for Steelhead on the remote stretch of Pucker-brush Creek. Seeing over 2 dozen Steelhead off the drift boat in a one mile stretch, with no one else around, reminded me of Alaska. After those experiences, I decided traveling to the Northwest Territories for lake trout and grayling or to Labrador for brook trout are a thing of the past and I will concentrate on the quality of fishing available in New York State. If you ever need a recommendation, I would be pleased to provide one.

Randy,
Again both Rick and I thank you for another great trip. I continue to marvel at both your knowledge of the Salmon River and the patience exercised in providing instructions on the techniques necessary to successfully catch fish; with the bonus of enabling us to fish with the best Orvis equipment. There may have been a lot of fisherman in the Douglaston Run, but I seriously doubt anyone one was as successful as Rik and I in hooking-up on as many salmon. (And lucky Rik catches his first Steelhead of 20lbs on his first cast of the day.) When I recall us fishing a pool in the afternoon and hooking 18 to 20 salmon in a three hour period while an array of other fisherman fishing the same pool never got a strike, is a tribute to your superior abilities as a guide. I consider myself fortunate to be able to fish with you as many times as I have in such a short period of time (I believe it was my seventh trip in one and one half years.) There will hopefully be many more trips and all will be you if you continue to be available. Those three successful spring steelhead trips with you has me now hooked. As I have repeatedly stated to my many fishing friends, you can either go fishing or you can charter Drift Boat Guide Randy for "catching".

About Jeff Pierce
Jeff Pierce, AKA Dr. Fish, is the Sales Manager of Fly-Fishing Products for O. Mustad & Son (USA), Inc and Partridge of Redditch. He is the Captain of Team Mustad USA and is a diehard angler and fly tier. He has traveled from Buffalo to Borneo in search of finned quarry to grapple with. When not in the office, he can be found chasing fish wherever possible. Whether it's Sailfish off Borneo, Payara in Brazil or Brook Trout in the Adirondack Mountains, you can bet that Jeff is no doubt casting flies to something that will bend a rod. Jeff's alias is "Dr. Fish" because of his "insane" addiction to fishing and studying fish. Jeff always makes time to talk and or help with any and all of your fishing needs. The following are general and depend on temps and water levels:
June - August
Skamania (a summer run strain of Steelhead)
Atlantic Salmon in small numbers
Chinook also start to show as early as July on high water but number grow with good water conditions in late August.
-
September
Chinook and Coho start coming in in good numbers
Steelhead start coming in in decent numbers
A few Browns start showing
-
October
This is the prime month for Chinook. They come in in large numbers now.
Coho are also coming in in good numbers.
Steelhead really begin showing in good numbers now
Browns also start coming in in decent numbers but Nov. is peak for them.
-
November
Most of the Chinook are dead or near dead but a few fresh stragglers do come in. While the Coho run is over for the most part, they remain in decent shape and hold up longer than the Chinook. This is a great time for Steelheaders as the Salmon crowds are gone and the numbers of Steelhead are normally good.
The Brown fishing is also pretty good, although not as good as tribs more to the west.
-
Dec - Feb.
This is obviously the coldest period. The fishing can be great for Steelhead depending on water temps and levels. You are best off fishing from late morning through the afternoon at this time of year as the suns rays help to warm the water slightly, making the fish a bit more active. Browns are often caught this time of year as well.
-
March - April
The water starts warming and the Steelhead start coming in in greater numbers. The spawn begins as the temps rise and often a small run of Browns come in to feed on bait fish and Steelhead & Sucker eggs. Don't be surprised if you hook a Chrome freight train that takes you for a ride. There are SPRING run Chinook in small numbers that show up at this time. If only the State would process some of these fish to build the spring numbers.
-
May
This is a GREAT time to target drop-back Steelhead. These are spawned out Steelhead who are now eating everything in sight as they work their way back to the lake. The numbers of fish caught in a day at this time of year can be amazing. The first Skamania and Atlantic's can be caught at this time as well.
-
Hope this helps a bit . . .

While they are not as numerous as the Salmon or the Steelhead, these are an optional trophy of a Fishing life time.
-
October 20 - May 1 - Steelhead 8-15 lbs. The Fall Steelhead is without a doubt, one of the hardest fighting Fish that swims in the Salmon River NY. They'll take you into your backing in seconds, then jump start your heart with tail walking antics that will live in your memory forever.
-
Winter - This is one of my favorite Drift Boat Guide Fishing times of the year. With colder temperatures the crowds disappear. Steelhead continue to come into the river from the lake. A winter Drift Boat trip aboard our heated Drift Boat is a great way to learn the river and experience it's beauty.
-
The end of February, March and April are great Steelhead Fishing days as new Fish move into and out of the river on a daily basis. As the river temperatures rise, so does the aggressiveness of the Steelhead. Often, sight fishing is possible as they move into the shallows.
We can Spin or Fly Fish for Salmon or Steelhead either by wading or using the Drift Boat..
-
I invite you to join me and enjoy what is an unquestionably one of the finest fresh water fisheries in the eastern United States.
Randy Jones Salmon River NY Guide
First Mate Matt, dad Capt. Jerry and myself out on my 16 foot heated drift boat, enjoying a Steelhead filled day during the Winter on the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY. 35 minutes drive North of Syracuse off the Interstate. Approx. 5-1/2 hour drive from the Boston area, approx. 4-1/2 hour's from N.Y. City. Steelhead average 8 to 12 lb's. We fish for them from Nov. all Winter into the first week of May approx. My personal favorite time to fish for them in order of preference, April, Dec. Jan. Feb. Mar. and Nov. I have a BIG propane heater on the drift boat that I use during the Winter to help take the chill off. :) Works great!
We also fish for (10-20 lb. average) King Salmon (8-12lb.average) Coho Salmon that run from Mid-Sept. until the end of Oct. Then we have Brown trout that average 3-5 lb's. with some reaching into the teens during Nov.
Very reasonable flight's into Syracuse, car rentals, very inexpensive lodging, food and guide rates. :)

Brown Trout Fishing Report
Wed. - My guest's from Tues. joined me again today for another incredible fishing experience. At times we had a dozen 2-4 lb. Browns within a 10 by 10 foot area of the water. Sighted over 75 - 85 Browns over the course of the day with not another sole around. LOADED!! :) Incredible opportunity ALL day.
I hope you all have the chance to some day experience this truly magnificent fishery! Today we felt as though we were in Alaska, and NOT around one of the most popular fishing area's in the country! The fish we played with and landed were WAY to many to try to keep track off. Don't ya just hate when THAT happens? :)
ALL of these fish are just waiting here for YOUR, perfectly cast bait or fly. :)

Holy Cow! - Ramblings from this Salmon River NY Steelhead Fishing Drift Boat Guide:
My guest's have been playing with lots of fish, everyday off the drift boat, in every spot, on the Slam'n Salmon River. Guide Tip - We have predominately been fishing Habitat that is a "Combination" of Prime Transitional Holding and Prime Non-Transitional Holding.
-
Lot's of folks out enjoying this great weather and fishing. Smiles abound! Local economy getting it's largest influence of business for the year. From the waitress's, bartenders, the guy who pumps your gas, the convenient store clerk's, tackle shops, lodges, guides, fish cleaners, etc...
We all thank you, for spending your valuable fishing $$ up here!!
Few anglers going for a swim while fighting there fish. Watched an excited youngster lose his fish on the bank and then dive into the shallow water. Wrapping his arms and legs around the fish as he rolled around in the water and happily giving it a bear hug :)
Lots of fish around! Thousand's of Salmon have entered the Salmon River NY over the last 2 month and are spread out from the top all the way to the bottom of the Slam'n Salmon River, Altmar - Pulaski NY.
Load's of fish in the Estuary, stacking up, entering, running and spreading out over the entire length of the Slam'n Salmon River. With many many more to come!
Everyday in the lower river anglers have had either a dead, slow, ok, not bad, steady, pretty good or reeeeeelly good # of Salmon (w/ a few Trout) entering the River. Everyday over the entire length of the Slam'n Salmon River these King Salmon, Coho Salmon, Steelhead and Brown Trout are in 3 specific places.
-
Lil Guide Tip: (specific places)
Approx. % of fish my guest's and I are visually seeing and counting in each type of Habitat, over most of the river, daily, off my drift boat.
Transitional Stage - Where the fish rest at temporarily while in a transitional mode (running the river). Lately, evening's have been more productive then morning's.
20% Prime Transitional Holding - Where the fish will hold for the entire day (usually mid-day) after they have stopped running that morning.
-
75% Prime Non-Transitional Holding - Where they will sit for an extended period of time (days and sometimes an entire month) before there biological clock tells them to find a mate and special rock.
5% on that special rock. Seeing a lil more activity everyday.
Salmon River NY Steelhead Fishing Report's, Forecast's, Tips, Ramblings, Articles, Enjoy!
Best fishing in many years and it's not over yet!
(I'll be guiding into May. Still have a couple of dates open, if intrested)
All of those fish that had to run by us this past Fall and Winter are all sitting above us. Some have already started to drop back down the river. Those Steelhead have to pass all of us once again, giving us all another opportunity to play with these magnificent memorable fish.
-
3/31 - A good percentage of the fish in the river are actively spawning. A lot are all finding mates or have found their mates and are now edging closer to their spawning grounds as we speak. These are still holding in the normal current breaks for this water flow. The balance of the fish in the river are the drop backs. We are starting to see these now. They will be in their normal current breaks for this flow of water. Eating everything in sight to rebuild their strength back.
-
Almost every piece of water running into the lake or the Salmon River is with fish, in our area. Ye-haa! This is a great time of the year to either walk all of the surrounding creeks, river or streams. Or, fish all of your normal spot's on the Salmon River. We all have SOOOOOOOO many incredible options to choose from presently. You could pretty much just flip a coin on where to fish. They are EVERYWHERE!
-
Presently, you pretty much have Steelhead that are in all stages (start to finish) of the spawn. (Entering the river, finding mates, pairing up, thinking about building a red, locating themselves to different area's, males fighting over the females, etc....) Each stage is unique. Each stage normally puts different requirements on the fish and causes the angler to adjust. (In my opinion, but what the heck do I know. :)
I heard a rumor that it might start to warm up in August? (he-he) Time to check the weather. I hope your enjoying the fishing as much as my guest's and myself have been and I hope to see you on the water with your rod doubled over!
-
Lot's of water saturated snow all around and especially up on the tug. Today, 3/31, we have a lot of rain, thunderstorms, very high and gusty winds and finally warmer air temp's forecast over the next several days.
-
Things can and often do change around here in a day. Expect a lot more water in the river and all of our local tribs with the balance of some fresh steelhead running in. With the ground being 100% saturated with water this will cause additional run-off. This is all very normal and to be expected. Not an issue related to the fishing. Once again, no matter the flow, ton's of options. As the water levels fluctuate, we simply adjust, just like the fish do. :)
-
The drift boat - wade fishing for steelhead continues to remain excellent for some, ok for others and slooooow for smoothers. This is normal and I dont foresee any changes. All fishing techniques are working, all with different success rates, which again is normal.

A Sampling of Fishing Reports from some of March's Steelhead Trip's on the Salmon River NY:
Where the land ends LIFE begins
May devoted anglers read these words and relive the simple pleasures of finding - and landing - the big one.(The fisherman's book of wisdom )
-
My 1 guest and I had a great day! He played with over 8 Steelhead by himself! Ye-haa. Beautiful day and hardly a sole on the water?
-
Just when I thought yesterday would be a hard day to match, todays guest's did. My 2 guest's pounded out about 14-15 Steelhead. Carl had never landed a steelhead before. Today he lost his cherry by landing one.
He also played with more Steelhead in a day than ever before. He was ecstatic along with myself!
We had a number of highlight's for the day.
On almost the first cast into the hole and almost at the exact same time both of my guest's hooked up. Doubles! Talk about a Chinese fire drill with lines crossing, up - down. Exciting to say the least!
T.M. could not believe what happened in the next pool. On 3 cast's, he hooked up on all in a row. One after the other.
We batted 100% on spot's and played with fish in all. A grand day all around. Succeeding in all aspect's of my guest's goals. Dam, I love this job! :)
-
Today we hit 5 Steelhead with 2 new Salmon River anglers while landing 1 of them. Great day all around.
Randy
-
My one angler who was brand new to the river used a fly rod and got to tangle with an amazing 10 Steelhead for the day! Wow.
-
Another amazing day with 9-10 Steelies. Hit them in 4 out of 6 places. Dont gwet much but'a!
-
Sounds like a broken record but another 9-10 Steelies with my two anglers.
-
In another days fishing we tangled with 5-6 Steelies in under 4 hours fishing time. Im finding fish in every spot! Ye-haa! Come get'm. Fishing has been hot and looks to continue. Still a few open dates for April - May. :)
Some anglers having a slow time of it while others doing ok to great! Very normal. All the creeks are with fish. (Hint:) Such a nice guide to share. Hope it helps you to hook-up.
-
Another fun day with my 2 guest's playing with 7-8 Steelies! Everything working. Have fun, Randy
-
By reading the above sampling of March's Fishing Reports. You can see why I'm recommending you make the trip up here. Also, you can tell that the fish are pretty much spread out evenly in just about every single current break that fish's at its optimum with the correct water level.
No matter whether it's 400 cfs or 3,000cfs. (Please see the below article on Habitat and Reading the Water if you want to learn more about this.)
-
Another way to say it and or report what Im seeing:
I have sooooo many fishing options presently. Im not sure whether Ill fish the UDL, Norwell, Snout, Salmon River, diversions, branch's of some of these trib's., Candies, Lil, Pucker Brush, wade, drift boat, fly-spin, etc, etc...or a lil of all.
The life of a guide. he-he
There are soooo many good options presently, I may just flip a coin in the morning.
Im finding fish in almost every hole on the Salmon River. Also, we still have fresh fish coming into the river and also starting to see drop backs. On top of this we have fish in all the normal places that have not gone to the gravel yet.
**** So, if they are running in fresh, been in the river for awhile and have not gone to the gravel yet, are spawning and seeking shelter during the day in the closest deep water or are dropping back, this puts them all in the normal places you would fish the Salmon River in this flow. (Heads, seams, tails and sometimes the gut or hole within the hole - just another name or example of a current break)
I hope this makes it all a lil easier to understand. :)
Best Fish's,
Randy

Countless people have been guided by me and most have gone on to live normal lives :)

April and May will be some great fishing if you have the time. Lot's of fish around. I'd recommend coming up.

Fish Fighting Guide Techniques for Steelhead:
(This one may surprise you)
Yes, that's me with the stupid looking hat and the spinning rod.
The first thing I did upon hooking up was to immediately get even or below the fish. This tires the fish out sooner by knocking it off balance and causing it to work harder to stay upright. (An exception to this would be if there was very fast water (drop in the river), deep hole that you can not get around, snags or anything below you that might cause the fish to break you off. Then I would stay a little above the fish)
-
I see 95% of the angler's on this river never really load their rod properly when fighting a fish. This is totally understandable (as with everything else :) because if you've never been told or learned much of this, then it's all new. I certainly didn't know much of this when I was new and I still don't know it all. Most angler's only pull back 1/4 to 1/2 way back. In the above photo I am about 1/2 of the way back with the rod. Before I stop pulling back, the rod is pointed directly behind me with the rod horizontal and next to my ear. The butt (very bottom) of the rod is pointed at the far bank. It's hammer time!
-
By holding your rod upside down with rod tip in the water the fish will normally, slowly and quietly come in without much fuss. By keeping it's head under the water the fish feel's much more comfortable and tends not to freak out. This at times can also be used as a stalling tactic. You will notice some of the more experienced Salmon River anglers inverting their rod shortly after the hook up. This greatly increases the odds for the fish to remain in the hole-pool and not speed off down river. It also helps by hopefully controlling the fish's attitude. Keeping it from thrashing around and breaking off.
-
The above is an example on how many Steelhead are lost with the rod tip up. (If snag's or strong current's are around you then this would be the correct way) Notice the splash? Miss Steelhead did not like it when I pulled her head out of the water. Many fish are lost-broken off at this point.
-
If you listen to the fish it will pretty much tell you at what angle to hold your rod. If the fish is on the other side of the river I always hold my tip high. If I held it low then the full amount of the rivers current would put an awful lot of additional pressure on my line and tippet as it bow's. Many times resulting in breaking the fish off. If the fish is approx. from the middle of the river towards me then I always hold my rod tip just off the surface of the water down low or IN the water. (Providing I dont have any real fast currents or snags.)
-
The funniest thing about this picture and the above photo was as I was playing the fish. Anytime I had my rod tip up I lost total control over the fish. It pretty much went anywhere it wanted to. It also took much longer to tire it out. But, as soon as I put the tip low (down and dirty) or in the water. It came straight in at me. This lower rod position combined with standing below the fish will put approx. 3 times more pressure on the fish when it is within 60 feet or so. Tiring it out sooner and gaining much more control over the fish.
-
When reeling in the fish with the tip up:
There are 2 things wrong with the previous sentence.
#1. I will sometimes hold my rod upside down with tip in water when bringing in a steelhead. Fish don't breath air and with tip up it feel's as if (which you are) trying to pull it's head out of the water. This creates a havoc, wrecking ball of nerves that sometimes ends with fish off. I breathe air, so if you put my head under the water you can be assured I would not be happy. (Same with the fish) By holding your rod upside down with rod tip in the water the fish normally will slowly and quietly (within reason) come in without much fuss.
-
#2 Whenever targeting large species of fish the rod becomes a flexible lever. We never reel the fish in; we PULL the fish in. The reel is only used to recover slack line. Pull-up, reel-down. Now combine #1 with #2 and by George, you've got it!
-

Hi Dave, Yes, we did fish behind the ol'Ames today, loaded!!. Randy
-
Randy, I'm just curious about what you posted a couple days ago. You mentioned the location of one of your secret creeks. Is there truly a creek behind ames or are you just screwing with your fans?? Please keep up the the good job you do with your web site, it truly keeps the salmon river close at hand when I read your reports even when i'm 300 miles away. Thanks for the reports! Eric
-
Hi Eric, Yes, just having fun. (no creek behind Ames). Was that you I saw walking around aimlessly behind Ames the other day with a fish'n pole in one hand and a typo map in the other? ;) Did I hear you yelling something about that DARN Jones guy! Best, Randy Jones

Randy,
Thank you for several memorable trips this year on the Salmon River NY. The highlight of the year was definitely the outing on the Salmon River during SeptemberFishing the Salmon River NY with a salmon or steelhead driftboat guide with my son for salmon.
Dick Koelling
Note: If you don't recognize "Pucker-Brush Creek", that is one of my secret creeks where Steelhead abound in a beautiful , pristine environment without many or even any other anglers.

Hello Guys!
A few years ago I was fly-fishing the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY with Geir Sivertzen and Bob Funk. We had a tremendous day catching 50 of the 85 salmon and trout that we hooked. It was truly the fishing outing of a lifetime. The river was filled with fresh lake-run Chinook and Coho salmon, brown trout and steelhead.
-
I was fishing with 8 pound tippet when I hooked into the Coho salmon of a life time. After a 25 minute battle, I managed to grab its tail as our guide Randy Jones, was busy chasing fish that Bob and Geir were fighting. My Coho salmon measured 35 inches (88.9 cm) and weighed 22 pounds (9.98 kg). After weighing and measuring it, I quickly released it back into the river. It was by far the largest Coho Salmon I had ever landed in nearly 20 years of fishing for them. The next day, I looked at the International Game Fish Association, IGFA, Record Book and saw that the 8 pound tippet class Fly Rod record was 19lb 9oz. My fish beat the World Record by well over 2 pounds. I felt sick, because I did not go through all the necessary steps to register the fish as a record. So, the old record stands, but we all know that I beat it.
The fish was caught on one of my special flies I came up with, called Jeff's Coho Candy. It is tied on a Mustad 80500BL size 10. Recently I have started tying the same fly on a Partridge SINGLE SALMON SALAR BLACK in size 9 as well. On the left, you can see me holding the "would-have-been-a-record" Coho. From now on I'll carry a copy of the IGFA Record Book in the back of my fishing vest.

Best Steelhead and Salmon Fish's,
Salmon River NY Guide - Randy Jones
November 2 is a day I will remember for the rest of my life . It started out crisp and clear in the morning as we started our Drift Boat Trip down the river . My companions were Drift Boat Guide Randy Jones of Yankee Angler , and my best friend Jim Ciantar.
We stopped at a couple of holes to fish but with little success , and I mean little . The second place we stopped Jim and I teamed up to take six fish ranging from 3-6 inches long . We all got a pretty good chuckle out of that . However it gave Randy an opportunity to work on our techniques . The proper cast and drift is crucial when fishing the Salmon River . Randy is one of the finest teachers I have come across . He has an uncommon blend of humor , patience , and knowledge which is rare . He explained his tactics and why he uses them . Steelhead location and why they are there . Also seasonal changes regarding Steelhead location , all invaluable fishing information.
The third spot we hit was awesome . Which by the way , Randy was rushing to because he knew some Steelhead were there . Within a couple of minutes after dropping the Drift Boat anchor I hooked up with a real burner Steelhead, but lost him . The Fishing had been slow up to that point but Jim and I managed to hook up five more Steelhead in the next couple of hours . We worked the hole from both sides in and out of the Drift Boat . All the while Fishing Guide Randy was coaching us on how to properly fish the hole and where the Steelhead lay up . Before we left that hole I managed to hook and land the below 17.5 pound beautiful male steelie . (Who will spend the rest of his days on my wall . ) It has taken me nine years and a lot of time and money to get that fish . My first good steelhead . Truly a fish of a lifetime . Jim also hooked a nice silver bullet Steelhead about 12 pounds but lost him at the net.
I have been fishing for a long time , and for many different species , from marlin to pan fish . In those years I have had some really great days . This certainly was one of the best . The combination of beautiful weather , great people , cooperative fish on a scenic river , well that is pretty hard to beat.
For those of you just getting started in salmon and steelhead fishing , do yourself a favor . Hire a Guide . It does not have to take nine years like it took me . I highly recommend Randy he is a true professional and a real good guy .

The Moon lit our travels to the hopeful honey hole under the cover of dark. The sun rose to an inspiring orange and pink sky with an encore of Geese trumpeting over head. The thunder shouted, fish on! A rainbow the color of our quarry, shown majestically over the meadow. The pouring rain, sleet, hail, sun, snow and a bone chilling west wind off the lake were are travel companions today.

Brown Trout Guided Fishing Report
Wed. - My guest's from Tues. joined me again today for another incredible guided fishing experience.

Just wanted to let you know that we all had a good time Fishing and being Guided by you. We learned alot too. I re-rigged my reel that night with a Cortland shooting line and hooked a lot of fish on Thursday. I hooked a bunch of kings (over 10) and I landed two steelhead, one of which was 30 inches and perfectly silver! Thanks for all your help!
Steve Saliga
It was truly the fishing outing of a lifetime. The river was filled with fresh lake-run Chinook and Coho salmon, Brown Trout and Steelhead.

The fishing has never been so good! I can't remember when its ever been better for myself and guest's. Come on up. All of the normal Winter lyes are loaded up from one end to the other.
My last trip before my holiday vacation produced 20 powerful and incredible Steelhead that my clients enjoyed playing with. Speeding bullet runs, somersaulting jump's and the words we all love to yell out, FISH ON! :) were the norm for today. The adrenaline was flowing at warp speed. :)
I'll be back from vacation and start guiding again on Jan. 3. Nothing on the river concerning the quality of the fishing will change between now and then. All of these fish are here to stay for the rest of the Winter into the Spring. These fish are all waiting for your perfectly (ahemmm :) cast fly or bait. :) Lot's of open dates. For some more Outstanding fishing report's, articles, tips, photo's, etc... please read below. If you'd like to book a trip with me (email best), please leave me an email or phone message (315)-963-2065 and Ill return all messages around the new year. Happy Hook'n, Randy

Wed.
14 approx. Steelhead with my one guest. Ye-haa!

Fri.
2 guest's - Another 20 Steelhead day. Wow!! It was loaded in the few places that we fished today. My guest's had a lot of past Salmon River fishing experience (presentation) and it showed by today's numbers. Even with all of their past experience, I was easily able to impart a lot of new and exciting knowledge covering all aspect's of this amazing fishery. To continue to help them on their quest for these magic bullet's and to remain in that elite and not easily achieved, 10% that catch's 90% of the fish :) What a blast!
I'd enjoy guiding you, your friends and even your business associates for a corporate outing. Please give me a ring if your up for some exciting adrenaline filled fun! :)

Drift Boat Guide Steelhead Fishing Report
We continue to see reeeeel good Steelhead fishing on the Salmon River, NY. This past week we averaged between 12 and 16 Steelhead per day off the guided drift boat. Ye-haa! I'd obviously recommend coming up! Besides anglers with drift boat guides, Im also seeing plenty of shore angler's finding a good number of fish also. That's always nice to see! Every spot that myself and other's are fishing, are with Steelhead. We still have Steelhead in transition, so those spots are still producing nicely.

Mail Bag:
Hey Randy, what's your favorite month or time of year for Steelhead? Ben
-
Hi Ben. most anglers like Nov. the most for steelhead. Thats when they are the most visually stimulating, etc.... But its also when the river is the most crowded w/anglers, which offers you less fishing opportunity. I like Dec., Jan., Feb and March for your greatest steelhead fishing opportunities.
WHY?
We lose some of the fishing pressure with some anglers that are hunting, fair weather anglers are wearing their skirts-yukyuk, December holiday family obligations, Dec. business holiday obligations and only a few of us "Full - Time" guides will be working.
All of above affords you greater opportunity as a steelhead angler. And thats why I like the middle of the Winter the most for steelhead. The next period I like is April. Lil warmer and sight fishing is an optional treat.
-
Just want to say Randy, I like your posts. They do become very helpful. Keep them coming. I live in NJ and come up one time a yr. I like Nov best. But I do have trouble catching fish when the water goes up. I guess like you said. TOW. LOL!!! But its kind of hard when you live 5 hrs away. When the water goes up can you give me an Idea where these fish will set up on the holes. Like Nov and Dec time. Cause I noticed I have been up there when the river is at 335 and did ok fishing holes. But also went up when the river was 750. And did not catch any steel at all with 750. But I was fishing the holes like I did when it was 335. I know the fish are there but just don't know how they stage when the water goes up. Can you give me some points on how to adapt when this happens. Thanks. Rich W
-
HI Rich, I'm happy you enjoy the reports! Great Q!!
Steelhead in Nov.
2-6 feet of rippled water or the heat (rapids) combined w/ a current break.
Steelhead in Dec., Jan. and Feb.
Sloooow deep stuff, holes or pools. Prime non-transitional holding
-
Since your Q was on holes when the water goes up. Everything is current break related.
Prime non-transitional holding - Where they will sit for an extended period of time (days and sometimes an entire month or Winter for Steelhead) before there biological clock tells them to find a mate and special rock.
One of the main things I see when the steelhead are holding in the faster water, like now. Anglers do poorly fishing in the deep slow water pools. (Winter lyes) They don't move into that water until the water gets colder. They do this to conserve energy.
If its the Winter time and they are in the deep sloooow water, then anytime their is a higher flow of water they normally will move deeper into the hole. This could be the tail of the hole, the hole within the hole or just far enouph back to where they feel comfortable without having to exert to much energy.
-
An example of this would be a big hole that in 335 cfs, they sit more from the middle to the head. In 750 cfs, they sit more in the middle, the deepest part of the tail or the hole within the hole. In a much higher flow, they will sit in the tail, seams, hole within the hole and sometimes along the bank where there is lil to no current. Sooooo, depending on the water flow (cfs) during the Winter time determines where most of them will be and where I will target. Much of this comes with studying the fish and T.O.W. As we all know, there is a lot of empty water out there.
-
A hole is comprised of numerous current breaks:
1. The head of the hole at the drop.
2. The hole within the hole (this is like a magnet and also where many fish will hold thru out the Winter, hint-hint)
3. The tail of the hole where the water moves slower.
4. Any boulder's in the hole that break the current flow.
5. The seam's of the hole. (Where the fast water meets the slow water)
6. Sometimes a current break is in the flow - speed of the water. From fast to slow.
-
Sooooo, in closing Rich. Everything is current break related. Depending on the water levels determines how each individual current break will effect where the fish will hold. By this determination tells me where I will have the best chance for my clients to get into the most steelhead. I hope this helps in your steelhead quest's! Best Fish's, Randy
-
Thanks Randy, I am going up the 1st week in Dec this year. My 1st for Dec. I will do my best on what you said. You could not have explained yourself any better. I really do understand what you are talking about. And yes (TOW) is very important. LOL!!! Be safe out there and save some fish for me. LOL!!! Maybe I will see you drift by and say Hello to you. And again, Thank you for you helpful hints. Catch and Release is where its at for me. For the future of our kids. Happy fishing yourself Randy. Thanks, Rich W.

Soooo, the lesson for today is there are 3 "basic" ways to locate and target these fish. (1 thru 3, in my opionion. 4-7 is advanced )
1. When the Steelhead are running, fish there transitional resting points as they make there way up the river. Otherwise, you are fishing to fish that are not stopping, decreasing your odds greatly, in my opionion.
2. Once they stop to hold for the remainder of the day, fish these prime transitional holding waters.
3. Find these prime non-transitional holding places in the river all Winter, and just fish those. After all, they aren't going anywhere soon.
4. Find a spot that is a combination of all 1-3. (Or, a spot that has all 3 in close proximity, so you can jump around according to what the fish are telling you to do)
5. Combine 1-4 and find a place above a looong stretch of rapids. The fish get tired after running these rapids. These fish will be in this spot for the longest period of time, offering you the greatest opportunity, all day!
6. Combine 1-5 and make sure that your spot has 98% of the fish in a transitional stage, move into it. This will offer you the greatest opportunity!
7. Combine 1-6 and pick a spot that compresses and or concentrates them. On a dime, like a sardine can, trash can lid or the size of a Volkswagen beetle or bus. This cuts down on all the guess work and allows to to present your offering to all the fish on every drift.
-
By utilizing the above, you will have the most fish in front of you for the greatest period of time in a concentrated area offering you the greatest opportunity to present your offering to ALL of them. Fish ON - Baby!!
Now you know what I look for normally.....................
I hope you found "Todays Guide Tip" entertainingly informative or mildly educational.

Salmon River NY Guide and Author Randy Jones
Another Steelhead Fishing Report that came from last years Nov. Archives, I thought you all might enjoy:
-
We continue to see reeeeel good Steelhead fishing top to bottom of the Salmon River, Pulaski NY. Fresh Steelhead entering daily and running up the river, spreading out. Starting to see some resident's holding with a continuation of freshies moving thru daily. Water level is a nice pleasant 335 cfs. All spots producing!
Heard its been hit or miss in the lower end. A guide friend hit 2 Steelhead and 1 Brown down low, while guiding. He ended up fishing the middle river later that day, with great result's. Another guide friend did reel well in the middle section of the river. There really is no bad place to fish presently, providing you have the correct Habitat - (there is a lot of empty water out there), Rigging and Presentation.
-
Monday:
Got out early to get the spot. We were rewarded w/ numerous fish! Lots of jump's, somersaults and silver bullet torpedo runs.
My 2 brand new, inexperienced guest's played with over 10 steelhead while useing a combination of fly rod's and spin.
I even "accidentally" (hehe) hooked up 3 while demonstrating. All anglers I spoke with over a 3 mile stretch (that had experience). Had early success in the morning, then it slowed to a crawl by mid-day. We experienced the same.
-
A guide friend w/ 1 client hit approx. 8 Steelhead useing Eggs. My other guide friends 2 clients played w/ approx. 10 Steelhead useing fly rods. I also noticed Steelhead being played with above and below where we were. I'd guess approx. 50 or more Steelhead in our general area. Also saw numerous Steelhead in certain high viz. transitional resting area's mid-afternoon as we slowly drifted by them in the drift boat.
-
Tues.:
Scheduled day off the water to work in the office.
-
Wed:
Over 20 Steelhead played with! Ye-Haaa! I can count on 1 hand how many of these days with these incredible #'s my guest's have thru out our 6 month Steelhead season each year. It's HAMMER TIME!
Thursday:
Slooowed down. Only a dozen hook'd up thru out the day - yukyuk
Hit'm in all Prime Fall Steelhead Holding and Transitional spot's.
Myself and other guides noticed a decrease in the number of fresh Chrome today. Almost all the fish played with were what I call the resident's. They were darker in color and had been in the river a short while. Takes them a couple - few weeks to get a lil dark'r. The males have rosy checks and the females will be a silvery grayish. They have taken up residence in the prime holding water. I call these "happy fish". They have all 3 things they need to be happy and survive. Just like us!
1. Protection from predator's.
2. A food source
3. Comfort equals current breaks. This conserves there energy for the long Winter.
-
Friday:
Only a dozen or so played with ;), thru out the day. Hit'm in all spot's. Every single Fall Steelhead holding and transitional holding Habitat are with Steelhead.
-
All presentational techniques are producing. Some better than other's.
Egg's and egg imitations. Aquatics and bait fish imitations are all producing.
We used a combination of fly rods and spinning rods with incredible results.
-
From the Mail Bag:
This email was sent by one of my good friends and clients for a clarification on the 1/8 ounce added weight regulation in the fly zones.
-
Recently (November 2nd) I fished the LFZ and would appreciate clarification regarding the regulations for this water as well as the UFZ; specifically in relation to what does DEC consider the "1/8 ounce supplemental weight" restriction to represent; a #7, #5, or #4 lead weight or Tin split shot? From my experience Friday, I as well as many other anglers seem unaware of the 1/8 ounce restriction. Thanks Joe.
-
The 1/8th ounce rule has been around for a while, it isn't new for this year and is described on page 34 of the regulations guide. The size split shot isn't the only issue, it is the total added weight to your fly and or line. So if you decide to fish a bead head nymph and use a swivel, the bead head and swivel cannot exceed 1/8th ounce. Or if you just want to use split shot on an un-weighted fly and no swivel then the split shot cannot be over 1/8th ounce. The best way to gauge the split shot sizes would be to get an 1/8th ounce jighead and compare the size of the added weight on it to the split shot you are considering.
Hope this answers you questions,

Randy,
This response does little to answer my question regarding the size split shot that would comply with "1/8 ounce restriction" if fishing with an un-weighted fly. Thus I will use the website information that identifies a #4 split shot as weighing 1/8 ounce. In reality, a #4 or #5 split shot is generally all that is needed.
Thanks Joe
