Salmon net poles on the River Cree estuary

Salmon fishing along the Maitland River.

Canada.

A lone angler tries his luck in Alaska's Kenai river. The Kenai is arguably Alaska's most famous fishing river and best known for its runs of giant King Salmon (Chinook).

I didn't take time to fish. I fish for image opportunities nowadays.

The Kenai and Kasilof rivers have the richest teal waters from glacial silt I've seen. As I preferably seek out glaciers and high mountains I've seen many gorgeous teal blue rivers. I could only imagine how beautiful it would have been if enhanced by a bright sunny day, as it was always cloudy during my time here. I do plan on returning some year. Alaska is addictive!

Thanks for your visit. Always appreciated!

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is a National Historic Site of Canada located in Steveston village in Richmond, British Columbia.

Gulf of Georgia Cannery

Built in 1894, the cannery echoes the days when it was the leading producer of canned salmon in British Columbia. Today it is a museum with interactive exhibits, film, and tours that demonstrate the Cannery's important role in the history of Canada's West Coast fishing industry.

History

Early years

The cannery opened in 1894, in the boomtown of Steveston on the lower Fraser River. It was the largest cannery in British Columbia until 1902. It was known as the "Monster Cannery" - packing more than 2.5 million cans of salmon in 1897. Each canning season attracted a workforce of hundreds of workers, usually of First Nations, Chinese, Japanese, and European descent. At the time, fish canning was one of British Columbia's largest employers, and produced one of its principal export commodities.

Advancing technology

Over the years, the hordes of people manually canning salmon gave way to rows of high-speed machinery. For the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, the price to pay for these advancements would be a diminished role in the canning of salmon, as the last can of sockeye rolled off the production line in 1930. Then, the British Columbia Fishing and Packing Company and Gosse Packing Company Limited merged, forming British Columbia Packers Limited, an amalgamation of the other canneries in the community.

World War 2

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery remained quiet during the 1930s, but with the outbreak of the Second World War in Europe, the Cannery was revitalized by an onslaught of new capital and expansion in anticipation of a new enterprise, namely herring. New machinery and an army of workers produced case after case of canned herring in tomato sauce, the major source of protein for Allied soldiers and civilians struggling overseas during the war. Herring canning became an industry-wide endeavour and alongside it grew the business of herring reduction, that is, the transformation of herring into protein-rich oil and meal for animal feeding purposes.

Post war

The end of the war meant the end of a market and the end of herring canning in British Columbia. For the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, herring reduction would become the predominant activity by the late 1940s. The rise of this industry is reflected by the growth of the Cannery complex which saw three successive waves of expansion before the herring reduction industry was crippled by overfishing and government closure in the late 1960s. By the 1970s, a new market emerged in Japan for British Columbia herring roe and this ensured that the reduction operation at the Cannery would run once more. However, the new roe industry generated only a small amount of raw material for reduction, as catches formerly in the hundreds of thousands of tonnes were limited by regulation to the low tens of thousands.

Closure

By 1979, the cost of operating the Cannery's aging reduction equipment became too much and the reduction plant was closed. The buildings would serve as a net loft and storage for the Canadian Fishing Company's boat fleet and the era of transforming the Cannery into a museum would begin in earnest.

National Historic Site

During the 1970s and early 1980s the local community lobbied various levels of government to save the Cannery. In 1979 the Federal government purchased the property and in 1984 it was transferred to Parks Canada. The building was first open to the public in 1994 in celebration of the centennial of the building. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, a local not-for-profit organization, was formed in 1986 to work together with Parks Canada to develop and operate the site. Today, the Cannery is one of the very few federally owned National Historic Sites operated by a third party.

Chronology

1894 - Construction of the original L-shaped building; one manual canning line.

1897 - East Wing built to provide additional packing and seasonal living area. Two additional canning lines added.

1906 - Arrival of the mechanical butchering machine; West wing (butchering shed) converted to net loft/storage. East wing shortened by 50 feet (15 m) in 1906 due to new dyke and railway tracks along the waterfront.

1932 - Remains of the West wing demolished by a windstorm.

1940 - Roofline raised to accommodate additional boiler (boiler house).

1943 - Ice house built (in order to store fish for a longer amount of time).

1940-48 - Various structural modifications and additions related to the herring reduction process: Vitamin oil shed and dryer shed.

1956 - East wing of original building raised to accommodate evaporator. Separator room constructed next to evaporator room.

1964 - Addition of grinding and bagging room off drying shed.

1979 - Gulf of Georgia reduction plant closed, building is used as a net loft.

I truly appreciate your kind words and would like to thank-you all, for your overwhelming support.

this is Iceland's best salmon river as its name promises. A beautifully wild stream carrying salmon on their way up to spawn. It is such a great moment to witness.

Here's a scene I photographed a while ago for the Mendocino Traveler's Guide, a local magazine. In summer, salmon season is open for a few weeks and one sees these brave little fishing boats out at sea, with their extended lines sticking out from both sides. Seagulls come around for any bits of salmon that may be left at the cleaning station.

The day I was there the fishermen were already finishing up after a successful day -- busy at the docks loading their fish onto trucks, having already moored their boats. They were getting ready to have a beer at the local watering hole, while their boats were bobbing up and down on the gentle waves by the Pt. Arena pier, a few hours north of San Francisco.

It was a bright June afternoon, with the sun sparkling on the water. One could see a layer of fog building along the horizon. This fog - called the marine layer - is typical for the U.S. West coast. It forms as cool moist air off the ocean is drawn in by the hot high pressure systems inland, where it can be in the 90's and 100's Fahrenheit. Along the coast however, the marine layer acts as 'natural air conditioning' and keeps the temperatures in the 60's and 70's.

The salmons jumped and jumped and we caught them over and over again.

We got way more fish than the guys that tried to fish them 😁😁

The River Farrar in Autumn. Glen Strahtfarrar in the Highlands of Scotland

Back from a trip to Alaska, followed by family visits, now finally back to normal. This was taken in Katmai National Park and Preserve on the Alagnak River. The river was very high and fast moving so it wasn't safe to set up a tripod and stand in the river like is usually done, so we were shooting out of 3 or 4 person johnboats trying to keep level with the bears, handholding our cameras, haha. It was interesting to watch the different fishing styles of the bears here (and there were lots). Some walked quickly along the river and only jumped when sighting a large group of salmon, others sat in one spot and did the same, some were snorkelers who stood in the river with their heads underwater. This one was a prolific jumper who would dive in and immediately go back and dive in again. Even lacking finesse, we did see him catch a few.

• A picnic place to relax. The Ægissíðufoss is not as spectacular as other Icelandic waterfalls, but idyllically located in untouched nature. Ytri-Rangá is a river in Iceland popular for salmon fishing.

Fishing for Salmon along the coast of Sitka, Alaska.

Well, Happy New Year everyone!!! To say that I've taken a bit of a break from Flickr is an understatement! I don't believe that I've posted for almost 8 months .... that's crazy! I think that I just needed to take a creative break in my routine ... and I did put Flickr back on my radar for 2020 ... but I had company in town which prevented me from posting until now. So, without further adieu, I hope to get back to posting regularly. Fingers crossed anyways. :-)

I thought I would start out with my absolute favorite subject ... brown bears ... especially those in hot pursuit of salmon. This particular one just came up for air, shaking off the excess water in the process. To me, no subject is more exhilarating than this. To witness their power, skill, and survival instincts, is eye-opening indeed. Anyone else out there agree?

Thanks so much for being quite patient with me ... and I'll be around to checking out everyone's photo streams as well. I have missed my Flickr family for sure. Many of you have become my shooting buddies and tour guides when passing through your areas, a nd most importantly, my source of inspiration. Thanks and Happy New Year!!!

As the years pass by, my son's Grandfather continues teaching him more and more advanced Salmon Fishing skills.

My annual shot of fishermen standing in the Credit River trying to land a salmon

The trip to Alaska was a great success. I promise I won't bore you with all the details, just most of them.....

FYI - first day out I caught 3 coho salmon, 2 weighed in at 15 lbs. and one at 12 lbs.

The Topsham News Mural was painted by Kathryn Wragg & commissioned by Sue & Roger Bendall. It depicts the River Exe Salmon Fishing which was a thriving industry from the historic port of Topsham, Exeter, Devon - alas no more.

It was based on old photographs of local salmon fishers taken by Sidney Brown, when he was Chief Photographer for the Express and Echo.

Evening light on the Vedder River reflects a sunset glow while fishers cast for salmon. Inside the city boundaries of Chilliwack, great fishing can be found on the Vedder/Chilliwack River. This popular area features a superb public trail built by the Chilliwack Rotary Club, called the Rotary Trail, that allows access points to some of the most popular fishing holes and scenery too beautiful to describe.

Chilliwack/Vedder River Report: www.fredscustomtackle.com/fishing-report:

September 14, 2022

"The white springs are now rolling in, and in reasonable numbers too. You can drift pretty much anything in front of these aggressive fish to entice a strike. Roe, soft beads, jigs, gooey bobs, blades, intruders (don't laugh), and wool are all effective lures."

I came across some old pics I took of my Dad's salmon fishing flies.

This is a combination of the two images in the first comments box ... after a lot of messing around!

Loch Maree, Wester Ross in the Scottish Northwest Highlands:

www.philipcoppens.com/lochmaree.html

"Loch Maree was a sacred loch, with the island, “Isle Maree”, dedicated to the moon goddess. Possibly, Slioch, the dominating mountain along the lake was once held to be sacred; its name means “Spear” and provides a veritable spectacle of stone rising towards the skies."

by Philip Coppens

Reefnetting allows for much needed introspection and reflection. Yesterday, while not catching fish for eight hours, I had time to ruminate on the beautiful symmetry of this unique pastime. Two boats, two stands, two buoy lines, two head cans, and sometimes too much time between hauls. I wouldn't trade this experience for the world.

An opportunity of a lifetime for me to get to watch bears snatching salmon out of the air at the top of a waterfall.

If I never make it back to Alaska I really can't complain.

It would be very hard to match the amazing time we had.

Thanks for stopping by.

They are buddies as long as they don't encroach on each other's designated spot. That's when things get a little sketchy.

What is interesting to me is that they each seem to have their own style of fishing that they repeat over and over. Great fun to watch.

Thanks for stopping by.
