Waking the Witches_Kate Bush

Can you not see that little light up there?

Where?

There!

Where?

Over here

You still in bed?

Wake up, sleepy head!

We are of the going water and the gone

We are of water in the Holy Land of water

Don't you know you've kept him waiting

Look who's here to see you!

The memorial to Sarah Good is one of 20 benches that have been placed next to the old graveyard in Salem.

Salem village was where Danvers is today, and is where most of the trials were held. There is a separate memorial across the road from where the old meeting house was where many of the examinations took place.

This Salem witch trial series has been a bit morbid; however I feel like this one is hopeful in a dark way :). It is about rising above persecution and hate and living your life how you were meant to live it.

Today on June 10, 1692, Bridget Bishop was the first person executed for witchcraft during the Salem witch trials of 1692. She was a landowner and a woman who spoke her mind...yeah, she's a witch. Puritans!

I know one of her descendents. Rest well, Bridget.

Slaves, Puritans and Poisoned Wheat

Popular history has tried to find pat answers to the causes of the Massachusetts witch trials of 1692. Convenient myths point an accusing finger at the severe and unforgiving Puritans. Others point to a dark-skinned Caribbean slave who supposedly brought witchcraft to Massachusetts from Barbados, or hallucinogenic microbes in the wheat causing the girls of the village to convulse and appear bewitched. In fact, these explanations have little basis in reality. Tituba and her husband, John Indian, black slaves from the Caribbean had no central role in the trials. There is no mention in any of the historical records of Tituba dancing in the woods with the girls, or practicing witchcraft.

While the Puritan religion makes an easy target for blame, most of the ministers of the day signed petitions declaring the innocence of the accused. In general, they were against the tactics of the Salem Judges.

There was even a theory that blamed the seizures of the girls on a microbial infection of the local wheat. In fact, the erratic behavior and gyrations of the accusers was carefully choreographed. This was not random, pathological movement caused by infected food.

There is no easy, convenient and neat explanation. The tragic events in Essex County, Massachusetts were initiated by ill-behaved girls who accused for sport. The court made a tragic situation worse. The accused, presumed guilty by the judges, were tortured until they pleaded guilty, accused others and were set free. If they pleaded innocent, they were executed. One man refused to plead at all and was tortured to death over a three day period. With these judicial tactics it is easy to understand why the number of accused increased dramatically over a short period of time.

What makes tragedies like this all the more tragic is that we do not always learn by our mistakes. How many “witch trials” have there been since 1692 and who have been the accused?

October 1st 2016

In the kitchen of Salem's minister, Tituba--a Carribean slave--taught a group of young girls some fortune-telling tricks that she had learned as a young girl in Barbados. As they cracked eggs into a glass of water to "see" the occupations of their future husbands.

One of the young girls, perhaps with an overactive imagination or perhaps with overwhelming feelings of guilt because what she was doing would have been considered witchcraft (a crime punishable by death), saw the vision of a coffin.

And so began the hysteria that history knows as the Salem Witch Trials.

I love the history of this time period. Love reading the different historical accounts, the views of historians on why and how the trials happened.

Giles was one of the people accused in the Salem hysteria that resulted in trials and hangings in 1692. The superstition of the local community boiled over into cruel punishment and injustice when some young girls began to accuse people of being witches.

He refused to plead guilty or innocent in his trial and was subjected to a torture that was supposed to encourage a plea... he had a board placed on him and was pressed to death over a few days by having stones packed on the board. He died on September 19, 1692. He was over 80 years old. Aside from his contempt of the process, a motive for his refusal to plead was that his farm would go to the state if he was found guilty. He wanted his sons to inherited it. He is said to have called for more weight when he was asked to plea during his torture and those were his last words.

His third wife, Martha was hanged for witchcraft on the 22nd of September, 1692.

Legend has it that Giles Corey's ghost appears in Salem before a major catastrophe. A figure was seen walking in the graveyard before the Great Salem fire of 1914.

A Wikipedia article gives a good account of all of this.

There are several countries in the world where people are still being accused, persecuted and killed for being suspected witches. A newspaper article, as recently as 2008, reports of a witch killing in South Africa.

Assignment: PCA58 – Superstition

Deadline: March 15, 2009

“Superstition is foolish, childish, primitive and irrational - but how much does it cost you to knock on wood?” - Judith Viorst

Mission: As this week contains the second of three Friday the 13ths that occur this year (the next one is in November), I want to see how you capture the essence of superstitions (good, bad, preventative, other). Here is a great resource for ideas: Superstitions: old wives tales, folklore, bizarre beliefs, taboos, omens, lucky & unlucky things.

WIT

Well I guess I went dark on this one... I had originally intended to take a lighter view of this but other than photographing a Dreamcatcher I was left with little inspiration come the last day of the assignment.

So this afternoon I took a drive to Salem - the weather has perked up a little and it was a balmy 60F here.

There were a fair number of people at the old graveyard in Salem. My image of the Suzannah Martin memorial is the most viewed in my stream and I have wanted for some time to put a set together of other images from the memorial.

My Salem Witches set is here if you are interested - along with some more commentary on some of the stones.

The Salem Witch hysteria a fascinating subject and is it a testament to superstition and cruelty.

The light was very harsh and this is probably not the best of the series that I took this afternoon, but the story is very strong. It makes you wonder how far you would be prepared to go for your convictions.

The stones are grey but I wanted to strengthen the contrast between the stone and the flowers (this memorial is often decorated in memory of the victims) which have withered since being left there.

I used Photoshop elements to do some levels adjustments and added a grayscale layer and selectively erased the grayscale over the stem and flower to restore the color. I then increased the saturation a little to bring out the red and yellow a little more.

Then I spent a couple of hours reading and writing about each of the stones I included in my set.

Bridget Bishop (ca. 1632, England – 10 June 1692 Salem, Massachusetts) was the first person executed for witchcraft during the Salem witch trials of 1692. I know one of her descendents. Rest well, Bridget.

Martha Corey: I, sir, am innocent to a witch. I know not what a witch is.

Judge Hathorne: If you know not what a witch is, how do you know you are not one?

Arthur Miller - The Crucible

"The Jonathan Corwin House, known locally as The Witch House, is a historic house museum at 310 Essex Street in Salem, Massachusetts. It was the home of Judge Jonathan Corwin (1640–1718), and is the only structure still standing in Salem with direct ties to the Salem witch trials of 1692. Corwin bought the house in 1675 when he was 35, and lived there for more than 40 years; the house remained in the Corwin family until the mid-19th century.

Corwin was called upon to investigate the claims of diabolical activity when a surge of witchcraft accusations arose in Salem Village (now Danvers) and neighboring communities. He took the place of Judge Nathaniel Saltonstall, who resigned after the execution of Bridget Bishop. Corwin served on the Court of Oyer and Terminer, which ultimately sent 19 people to the gallows.

The house is an excellent example of 17th-century New England architecture, although historians are unsure of the date when it was built. Corwin family lore maintains that it was built in 1642, but some scholars claim that it was built in the 1620s or 1630s and that Roger Williams lived in it in the before he founded Providence Plantations.

The house was moved about 35 feet (11 m) to its current location in the 1940s when the adjacent street was widened. It was restored to look as it would have in the 17th century and the gambrel roof was altered. It is now a museum operated by the City of Salem and is open seasonally. In 2011, the Ghost Adventures crew featured it during season 4.

Salem (/ˈseɪləm/ SAY-ləm) is a historic coastal city in Essex County, Massachusetts, located on the North Shore of Greater Boston. Continuous settlement by Europeans began in 1626 with English colonists. Salem would become one of the most significant seaports trading commodities in early American history.

Today Salem is a residential and tourist area that is home to the House of Seven Gables, Salem State University, Pioneer Village, the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, Salem Willows Park, and the Peabody Essex Museum. It features historic residential neighborhoods in the Federal Street District and the Charter Street Historic District. The city's population was 44,480 at the 2020 census.

Salem is widely noted for the infamous Salem witch trials of 1692. Some of Salem's police cars are adorned with witch logos, a public elementary school is known as Witchcraft Heights, and the Salem High School athletic teams are named the Witches. Gallows Hill is believed to have once been the site of many public hangings, including of persons convicted as witches. It is now a park and used as a playing field for various sports." - info from Wikipedia.

The fall of 2022 I did my 3rd major cycling tour. I began my adventure in Montreal, Canada and finished in Savannah, GA. This tour took me through the oldest parts of Quebec and the 13 original US states. During this adventure I cycled 7,126 km over the course of 2.5 months and took more than 68,000 photos. As with my previous tours, a major focus was to photograph historic architecture.

Wadsworth Cemetery. This is the grave of Elizabeth Parris. She was the wife of Rev. Samuel Parris. Who is Samuel Parris? A bad, bad man with a Napoleon complex. He basically fueled the entire witch trials of 1692. Go to Wikipedia to read about him…seriously, he’s a sick, sick man and the history is fascinating. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Parris

Anyhoo…this is his wife. Poor lady. Remember his name, it will come up again in my Danvers travels.

Her epitaph reads “Sleep precious Dust no Stranger now to Rest. / Thou hast thy longed wish in Abrahams Brest. / Farewell best Wife, choice Mother, Neighbor, Friend. / Weel wail the less for hopes of Thee i th End.”

Written by Rev. Parris. I still hate him.

*******************************************************************************************************************

Wadsworth Cemetery, Danvers, Massachusetts.

Dating from the 17th century, this cemetery formerly the old Putnam Burying Ground, was purchased in 1826 by Dr. Benjamin Wadsworth in the last days of his fifty-three year pastorate "in consideration of the love and affection I bear to the inhabitants of the North Parish."

Herein lie the remains of the first four ministers' wives-

Bayley, Burroughs, Lawson and Parris, former ministers

Joseph Green, Peter Clark, Dr. Benjamin Wadsworth, Dr.

Charles Rice, and Hiram Hook are buried here. At least

one negro slave, Phebe Lewis, who lived with the Wadsworth

family, also lies here. Indians, veterans from wars

dating back to the Revolution, and most prominent names

in the early church history are also found here.

Some more info!

Wadsworth Cemetery is one of the oldest existing cemeteries in the country. Hundreds of settlers are buried here in unmarked graves, including early ministers and their families, as well as some people with connections to the witch trials including Elizabeth Parris, the wife of Rev. Samuel Parris, a very, very bad man who was a key figure in the witch hysteria. Oh and the two unmarked graves of the wives of Rev. George Burroughs who were thought to haunt two young girls in Salem Village and told the girls that the good Rev. had murdered them. Rev. Burroughs was hung for witchcraft in the summer of 1692.

I was recently contacted by someone who saw the picture that I have posted of the memorial to Elizabeth Howe, one of the people put to death during the Salem Witch hysteria of 1692.

I live about 20min drive from Salem and have been interested in the stories surrounding these events since I read about them long before I moved here.

The person asked me if I knew where Elizabeth was buried. This took me on an excursion to this place after reading an article about the real Gallows Hill.

This small outcrop of rock is behind a Walgreens on the outskirts of Salem (the GPS coordinates are available in an article linked from the page above) and I stood there for a while this morning picturing the scene and wondering about the horror of being dragged out of your home and finding yourself in a cart at the top of these boulders with a noose around your neck some months later.

I drove from this somber site listening to Jethro Trull singing "My God", behind a car plastered with "Jesus Loves You" stickers and wondering at the irony. How these acts too were carried out in the name of Jesus' love.

Elizabeth was one of the victims of the Salem Witch hysteria in 1692. She was accused and examined on May 31 by John Hawthorne and two other judges, tried and condemned a month later and hanged with four other women on July 19 of that year.

She said "If it was the last moment I was to live, God knows I am innocent of anything of this nature" in response to the accusations against her.

Her trial and accusation is an interesting example of how far afield the rumors went. She lived in Topsfield and was accused by a family who lived in Ipswich. These towns are a fair distance from one another - back in those days probably half a day's ride on horseback (although Topsfield is a lot closer to where Salem village was than Ipswich is.).

May 8th 2015

Memorial stone at the Salem Witch Trials Memorial in Salem, Massachusetts, to Giles Corey.

Corey was a Puritan who emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony some time before 1664. Already in his 50s, Corey was somewhat wealthy and owned a farm in the southwest corner of Salem Village (now the town of Peabody). He had two natural daughters with his first wife, Margaret. His second marriage, to Mary, ended with her death and no offspring. His third marriage to a "Lady Perkins" also ended with her death and no children. He married a fourth time to Martha, who had son, Thomas. Thomas became Corey's heir. Martha was pious and a dedicated church-goer.

The Salem witch trials began on February 29, 1692, when three young girls (aged, 9, 11, 13, and 17) who had been faking epileptic fits for a month accused Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne, and a black servant named Tituba of witchcraft. Three other teenage girls soon also begin "having fits" and declare they are being tormented by witches, too.

Martha Corey was outspoken in her belief that the girls were lying, and that a good thrashing would cure their fits. On March 12, the girls accused Martha Corey of being a witch. She was interrogated on March 21. Giles defended his wife's innocence vigorously. On April 13, one of the girls declared that Giles Corey was a warlock; he was arrested on April 18. He was interrogated the following day. Giles plead not guilty. But he refused to acknowledge he court's ability to try him -- which was required of defendants. Nonetheless, he was tossed in jail along with his wife.

Salem's jail cells were barely three feet on a side, and underground. An iron door with a barred window about five feet off the ground was the only view. The accused could sit on a bare wooden bench, and that was all. Defendants had to pay for their own food, water, medical care, and clothing. The Coreys, being wealthy, could afford to do so. Others were not so lucky...

The Coreys lingered in prison until September 1692. In May, a "Court Oyer and Terminer" began sitting in Salem Town, hearing the cases. No one who came before it was found not-guilty. On June 8, it sentenced accused witch Bridget Bishop to death. She hanged two days later. Ten more people were hanged between June and September.

Both Coreys were finally indicted in mid-September. Martha was tried and found guilty.

British law did not allow Giles Corey to get off scot-free. The remedy for refusing to acknowledge the court's jurisdiction was "peine forte et dure". The prisoner was stripped naked and laid face-up in a shallow, narrow trench. A heavy board was laid on his body. A boulder was then laid on the plank of wood. If he did not confess, another rock was added. And another, and another, and another...

This was known as "pressing".

On September 17, Sheriff George Corwin led Giles Corey to a pit in the open field beside the jail. Each of the stones placed on the board required six men to lift it. Not once did Corey cry out, admit jurisdiction, or plead for mercy. On the first day, Corey was permitted to eat three small chunks of bread and no water. On the second day, Corey was permitted three gulps of water, but no bread. Giles was asked three times that day to plead. Each time, Corey replied, "More weight."

More rocks were piled atop him. Corey's eyes bulged from his skull. Sheriff Corwin stood on the pile of rocks several times to look down at Corey, who gasped for breath. When Corey's tongue bulged out of his mouth, Sheriff Corwin stuffed it back in with his cane.

Giles Corey died at noon on Monday, September 19, 1692. His final words were: "More weight."

Since Corey refused to acknowledge the jurisdiction of the court, no indictment could be formally entered against him. Furthermore, the government could not seize his lands and estate. In accordance with his will, all his lands passed into the hands of his loving sons-in-law.

Martha Corey was hanged on September 22.

Martha's death, along with sevenothers on September 22, ended the Salem witchcraft trials. On October 3, Reverend Increase Mather (president of Harvard College) denounced the use of "spectral evidence" in the trials. Nine days later, the Governor of Massachusetts stopped the proceedings. The governor prohibited further arrests on October 29, freed several of the accused, and dissolved the Court of Oyer and Terminer.

In January 1693, a newly constitued Superior Court frees 49 of the remaining accused for lack of evidence. (One would die in jail, unable to pay her fees for her own care.) Five people indicted in September are found guilty and sentenced to death. Three others are indicted, tried, and condemned as well. The governor pardons all of them. Another of the accused was cleared in April, and in May another 11 had charges against them dismissed. Five remained in jail, indicated but untried. They were pardoned by the governor in May.

The Salem witchcraft trials had ended.

What of the many young girls (and boys) who had accused others of witchcraft? Most of them slunk away, never speaking of their role in destroying the lives of countless people. They tried to disappear... Several were known later in life as vicious gossips, cruel slanderers, and all-around nasty people.

Only one confessed her sin. In 1706, Ann Putnam, Jr. stood up in church and confessed deep regret for lying about being tormented by "witches". She asked for the forgiveness of God and her church.

Martha's son, Thomas, sued the colony of Massachusetts -- arguing that his mother had been hanged illegally. He asked for damages, and was awarded £50 on June 29, 1723.

The Burying Point is the oldest cemetery in Salem. Among its esteemed occupants are a Mayflower pilgrim, a judge, and one of Reverend Cotton Mather's children.

Among those not laid to rest here? Anyone found guilty of witchcraft in 1692-1693. Those found guilty were not allowed to be buried on hallowed ground.

I have to do some research to see if any of the accused have known gravesites. In some cases, family members collected the bodies and buried them on home plots, but I don't know that any would have been marked...

A street performer in Derby Square, Downtown Salem. Probably one of the cuter costumes I saw that afternoon.

The first time I saw the memorial to the people who were persecuted as witches in the 1690s in old Salem I cried. History was personal. I couldn't imagine the conditions they were kept in during their trials. The indignity. The filth. The humiliation. The pain. The torture. For what? Religio-political crap.

Seeing this memorial brought up the same emotions but it also brought up anger that people were stupid enough for fall for the hysteria brought on by those who wanted more power over other people's lives.

The shackles are strong symbols. Have we learned the lesson?

Night-time in Salem cemetery

Since 1729, when it was built as a Puritan meeting house, Old South Meeting House has played an important role in American history. It was on this site that the Judge Samuel Sewall publically apologized for his role in the Salem Witch Trials. It was on this site that Benjamin Franklin was baptized. It was on this site that slave and poet Phillis Wheatley explored the meaning of liberty.

In the years leading to the American Revolution, thousands of colonists gathered at Old South Meeting House to challenge British rule, most famously to protest the Boston Massacre and the tea tax. The largest building in colonial Boston, Old South Meeting House was the stage for an overflow meeting on December 16, 1773, which adjourned to Griffin’s Wharf for the infamous event that would become known as the Boston Tea Party.

Today Old South Meeting House is open daily as a museum and treasured landmark and keeps its revolutionary heritage alive as an active gathering place and a haven for free speech in the heart of downtown Boston.
