After all the photographs from the landscapes around the island ile d'or I can't miss a closer shot. The island is in privat property and can't be visited. The tower is used as a lodging.

The massif de l'esterel are very nice uplands in a large part made of red porphyr, a vulcanic rock. It used to produce dyes out of it. And it was and is a very popular building material.

L’île d’or est l'un des plus beaux symboles de la destination Estérel Côte d'Azur. Visible depuis la plage du Dramont, elle intrigue avec sa haute tour. Elle a inspiré le monde de la BD et du cinéma.

BASILIQUE NOTRE DAME
L’église Notre Dame de la Victoire fut édifiée à la fin du XIXème siècle, quand le Maire Félix Martin entreprit de “transformer” Saint-Raphaël, non sans succès.
La croissance de la ville fut telle que la vieille église San Rafeu ne pouvait guère plus accueillir les nouveaux citoyens. L’Abbé Bernard, curé de 1882 à 1890, confia alors la construction d’un nouveau lieu de culte à l’architecte Pierre Aublé, camarade de promotion de Félix Martin. D’origine Lyonnaise, et grand amateur du style Byzantin - Mauresque, Pierre Aublé imagina la basilique de Saint-Raphaël selon cette inspiration. On retrouve d’ailleurs un dôme très caractéristique de ce type d’édifices, largement inspiré de celui de Sainte-Sophie à Istanbul.
On découvre également en façade une représentation de l’archange Raphaël, symbole de la commune (voir “la légende de Tobie”). Construite en majeure partie avec du grès rose de l’Estérel, elle occupe une surface totale de 850 m² pour une hauteur de 35m.
L’église Notre Dame fut inaugurée en 1887, et baptisée ainsi en hommage à une célèbre bataille maritime où les forces chrétiennes mirent en déroute la flotte ottomane, le 5 octobre 1571. Le Vatican l’a élevée à la dignité de Basilique en 2004, la deuxième que compte désormais le diocèse de Fréjus-Toulon avec celle de Saint-Maximin.
BASILICA NOTRE DAME
The Notre Dame de la Victoire church was built at the end of the 19th century, when Mayor Félix Martin undertook to “transform” Saint-Raphaël, not without success.
The growth of the city was such that the old church of San Rafeu could hardly accommodate the new citizens. Abbé Bernard, parish priest from 1882 to 1890, then entrusted the construction of a new place of worship to the architect Pierre Aublé, fellow student of Félix Martin. Of Lyonnaise origin, and a great lover of the Byzantine - Moorish style, Pierre Aublé imagined the basilica of Saint-Raphaël according to this inspiration. There is also a very characteristic dome of this type of building, largely inspired by that of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.
There is also a representation of the Archangel Raphael on the facade, symbol of the town (see “the legend of Tobias”). Built for the most part with pink sandstone from Estérel, it occupies a total area of 850 m² for a height of 35m.
The Church of Our Lady was inaugurated in 1887, and so named in homage to a famous maritime battle where Christian forces routed the Ottoman fleet on October 5, 1571. The Vatican elevated it to the dignity of Basilica in 2004, the second now in the diocese of Fréjus-Toulon with that of Saint-Maximin.
