I always feel blessed to be raised in Sai Kung. My parents used to live in Mei Fu area. Because of my asthma, my parents decided to move to Sai Kung where the environment is much better than in urban areas.

Sai Kung is often called Back Garden of Hong Kong; it certain lived up the hype where you can see a different side of Hong Kong. You can do many outdoor activities and as well as enjoying delicious seafood.

Every time I come back to Hong Kong, I will always miss this view. I cannot wait for my next time to arrive soon, early or mid September.

The SAI Shahak (שחק/Sky) was a tactical bomber developed at the end of the 1940s, that entered service in 1950. After two prototypes crashed due to buffeting and stability issues, a redesigned aerofoil was used that solved the problems. Power comes from two engines in the wings, and top speed is 923 km/h /580 mph, and range is 1900 km/1180 mi. Crew consists of three, two of which are housed in a spacious bubble canopy, allowing for great all-round visibility and comfort. The bomb aimer lies in the front. The pilots like flying their Shahaks, due to their reasonable agility and comfort. However, the engines are a bit underwhelming, and top speed is only reached on the long stretch or during a steep dive.

A payload of 4,700 kg/ 10,362 lbs can be carried, but never in combat.

A typical full bomb load consists of eighteen 227 kg/500 lb GP bombs, 12 in the bomb bay, and six on wing-mounted pylons. This can be switched for three 1,050 kg/2,315 lb laser-guided bombs, a jamming pod and a targeting pod, or a rotary launcher, limiting the bombs carried internally to 8. Other combinations can also be carried. Two 231 kg/ 508 lb torpedoes can be carried by the B-model.

After nine prototypes, the A-model was accepted into service. This is the basic bomber model, virtually identical to the last prototypes. The A* is an updated model, with provisions for a jamming pod and a Gomorra missile for self-defence. The engines produce more thrust, but the added weight means the performance is identical to the previous model.

The Shahak B is the version for coastal defence, and is basically an A* with equipment that allows for navigation over the ocean and provisions for two torpedoes and specialized equipment for anti-ship and -submarine warfare.

The Shahak D is a ground-attacker/ medium- to low-altitude bomber. The bombardier was replaced with an armour plate, and the pilot was given a fancy sight to aim the four 20mm cannons in the wings, each holding 230 rounds.

When reports from Operation Scherzo for Violin and Door Gunner (from the Kami Kitsune Konflict) appeared on the desk of SAI’s head of design, Yohanan Shimmel, he could not believe what he was reading. A simple helicopter had been able to take down a MeMe-21, which was unheard of. An effective, rugged, and fast aircraft such as the MeMe-21 should have been able to wipe out an entire fleet of helicopters without even getting a scratch on its glossy paint. Fearing that this would result in massive use of air-to-air missile-carrying helicopters, he began his research on how to effectively counter these tactics. He decided that a small, very manoeuvrable fighter would be able to take on a helicopter in one-on-one engagements.

Because this was a private project, and military funding was limited, a proven design was selected to be adapted for the new role. The Me-610 was chosen, and received a complete overhaul. The canopy was replaced with one that offered superior visibility, and the complex inverted V-12 was ditched in favour of a rugged turboprop. Other changes include more modern construction materials, new contra-rotating props (4-bladed to 3-bladed), new wings, tail, and landing gear. Armament now consists of four hardpoints for missiles, both air-to-air and anti-tank, and a pair of 30 mm high-velocity autocannons, used for both engaging air and ground targets.

The resulting design was christened Baz (בז/Kestrel), and underwent flight tests without any mayor inconveniences. Recycling the older design meant that known flaws were taken into consideration by the test pilots when flying. The Baz is very manoeuvrable, to the point of being almost dangerously unstable, and thus requires a pilot that knows what he is doing. Take-offs and landings are scary, because the propellers have little ground clearance, and require a very shallow angle to keep them from hitting the tarmac, therefore resulting in a long take-off run and high-speed landing approach. The armour around the cockpit, combined with the electronics and small posture of the aircraft make the cockpit very cramped. An ejection seat is included, but poses a danger to the pilot, as their legs tend to snag on the cramped cockpit, resulting in severe leg injuries. Pilots are advised to bail out in the old fashioned way, but they need to be wary of being chopped into bits by the mixer spinning behind them.

The combination of high speed (682 km/h /423 mph), compact size, and manoeuvrability make the Baz a considerable threat to any helicopter, and any fighter that tries to engage it at low altitude.

Fueled by the failure of the prototype, the engineers at SAI went to work on redesigning the Nammer (נמר/Leopard) into a more capable fighter-bomber.

The unfavourable stalling conditions were partially solved by the simple addition of a wing fence. The compressor stall was attributed to disturbed airflow, and the intake duct was redesigned to help smooth the incoming air, making compressor stalls a rare occurrence. The rear seat was reinstalled for the Weapon Systems Officer, and the canopy received a different tint, as the previous one hampered vision in darker circumstances. The weapon system was overhauled as well, with the addition of two extra hardpoints and a ventral-mounted 20 mm rotary cannon. A total of six Gommora missiles can be carried, or a variety of bombs and unguided missiles.

The new Nammer had a top speed of Mach 1.72 (1,825 km/h / 1,134 mph), and a range of 2, 460 km/1528 mi, enhanced by the capability of aerial refuelling. Pilots refer to the Nammer as an “honest aircraft”. Flown well, it will do exactly as requested, but it has the tendency to bite back if pilots don’t give it their full attention. Adverse yaw still is an issue, and poor low-speed handling as well. The T-tail meant that the aircraft was very vulnerable to a deep stall, and several were lost when a bad mistake was made with too little airspeed and altitude. It is well liked by the ones who fly it, but the pilots undergo intense training, and fly the aircraft very cautiously.

Despite its flying characteristics, the Nammer is a very successful fighter-bomber, proving to be a stable platform, both for air-to-air and air-to-ground engagements.

An Aryeh on the taxiway after a sortie, without ordnance and with airbrakes deployed.

The Samarian Aircraft Industries (SAI) Aryeh or אַריֵה (Meaning “Lion”) is a single-seat fighter for the Samarian Air Defence Force. It has a top speed of 1123kph/698mph and a range of 1012km/629mi, without drop tanks. Its armament consists of four 20mm cannons in a ventral pack, and provision for two 454 kg/1,000 lbs bombs, drop tanks or two Sodom (סְדוֹם) missiles. It is really well-liked by the ones who fly it, as it is a pretty nimble platform, and easy to control.

However, it is severely hampered in combat by some drawbacks. The bad radar is only barely capable of distinguishing between birds and enemies, which has led to a drop in bird population in the testing areas. That is, if the Sodom decides to work. These missiles are plagued by malfunctioning guidance systems and faulty fuses, but they are cheap. This means the Aryeh is practically a gunfighter, and requires a very experienced (or very lucky) pilot to be effective in combat.

These drawbacks only show on the front line, so the Aryeh was quickly pulled back for second-line duties. Its favourable flying characteristics still make it a joy to fly, and it remains a popular flyer for the reservists and for combat training.

An old picture of a SAI testbed, taken by an insider working on the project. Little is known of project Shachaf (שַׁחַף), only that it seems to be derived from the Aryeh, and, as we can see on the picture, that it has a tailhook.

The SAI Nesher ( נשר/Vulture) is a single-engined, all-weather interceptor built by Samarian Aircraft Industries. It is a pure interceptor, and thus boasts an impressive climb rate and top speed. Top speed is Mach 2.3 (2,455 km/h - 1,525 mph) at 12,200m (40,000ft), and service ceiling is 17,600m (57 742 ft). However, this comes at the cost of range, which is only 960 km (597 mi). The engine guzzles fuel, and on intercepting missions, range is shortened even further. Drop tanks can be carried for ferry flights, at the cost of two missiles. A total of five missiles can be carried, two on underwing pylons and three on semi-recessed hardpoints under the belly.

After the disappointing reliability of the Sodom missile, the Gomorra was developed as a replacement. Believing in the superiority of the Gomorra, any form of gun was omitted in the design of the Nesher, that was the primary user of the Gomorra. Recent development resulted in the advanced Raam (רעם/Thunder) missile, equipped with cutting-edge electronics, making it the most reliable missile in service with the Samarian Air Defence Force. The fleet of Neshers underwent a modernization program to be able to mount the Raam, which also updated the avionics, thus extending their service life.

In the sky, the Nesher proves itself to be a rather difficult bird. Manoeuvrability is mediocre at combat speeds, and it has the tendency to bite back if the pilot is not paying enough attention. Despite the two airbrakes, the landing speeds are high and the angle of approach rather steep, because of the limited visibility over the nose. A brake chute is included in the tail, but it has the tendency to snap off before having any effect. The few pilots qualified enough to fly the Nesher accept these drawbacks, simply because of their raw speed.
