The State Coal Mine in Wonthaggi no longer operates as a mine but it is now open to the public, including underground tours that are well worth experiencing. The mine was used to supply coal for domestic use in Victoria, including steam trains and electricity to Melbourne - it closed in 1968 as it was uneconomic to operate.
