South Fulton - GA Fire Rescue held its Promotional & Awards Ceremony at City of South Fulton, GA Fire Rescue Station 11. A total of seven members were promoted to Fire Captain and eleven members were promoted to Fire Lieutenant. There were also four Customer Service awards, a Merit award and a Firefighter & Fire Officer of the Quarter award given to deserving Fire personnel also. As so often before, as midnight struck and 2022 became 2023, many worldwide solemnly resolved to change their ways (in at least one respect) in the forthcoming year.
These promises can be vital work matters or simple domestic improvement. They can include quitting smoking, eating less, being punctual, helping neighbors or just keeping a tidy bedroom.
But one end-of-year resolution that should never be made by anyone in the maritime world - and in a great many others, too - is to behave safely.
That is because safety-consciousness, to a very high level, should be an existing state of affairs, routinely finding voice and seeing action both ashore and at sea, as for example with the highly successful initiative on the “PICO BASILE”.
We are delighted to say that this is an example of a great many such behaviours that must aggregate into a culture.

Residents and activists in the No CHOP Garage Coalition held a somber rally on June 9 near the site where one construction worker - a member of Iron Worker Local 401 - was killed, two others suffered injuries and two more workers remain unaccounted for after the partial collapse of a controversial parking garage at 30th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue in Philadelphia on June 8.
Gras Ferry Avenue was closed, as were all stores in the Grays Ferry Shopping Plaza across the street from the construction site out of fear that the whole 7-story structure could collapse.
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia owns the building and was adding the parking garage for employee use, much to the dismay of area residents who oppose the traffic, dust and noise the huge structure will create.
The structural collapse was contained to the 30th Street side of the stairwell, where all seven levels collapsed after a pre-cast concrete segment failed while being installed.
Twenty-four hours after the collapse, the bodies of two workers remain under the rubble until engineers figure out how to stabilize the building and first responders will be able to carry out a search and rescue operation.
No timeline for reopening the streets or shopping plaza is currently available but the No CHOP Garage Coalition plans a protest at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Main Building, 3401 Civic Center Blvd on April 24 at 4:30pm.
