Sheep are herd animals. They stand against each other because that is the safest way. Their head down is just a relaxed attitude. Usually a few are alert. A tree provides a little bit of shelter and security, at least one spot from which danger cannot come. (Google)

In Critter's eyes this is the safest possible place for a cat to sit whilst in a canoe!!!!....Cat Logic at its best.

(Taken on my Apple iphone, straight from phone cam, no computer enhancement, my Nikon D50 is broken. Location is Artesian Road in Rancho Santa fe; Highest position on explore was #2; this photo was also picked up by the front page of yahoo news which resulted in the 80,000 views)

We saw these horses standing here right in the middle of all the smoke and fires smoldering and the aftermath of the main fire that ran through here. I almost couldn't believe that about 25 horses were standing here and their fences had all melted or burned away.

Their owners had escaped but they were unable to evacuate the horses. The horse evacuation area at the Del Mar race track was already full with 1800+ horses, so they just left them in this large open space area which was the safest thing for the horses.

A neighbor had called the horse ranch owner Debbie, and told her that the worst of the fires had already passed, so they returned and I offered to help round up their horses.

It was extremely smokey, hot, windy. I could feel the radiant heat from glowing embers everywhere, there were flames all around and lots of smoke. All the surrounding hillsides had flames advancing. I am not much of a horse person but I figured I could handle it so i started grabbing the horses by the bridle, one or two at a time and leading them back to the safety of the barn, soon I got ahold of some lead ropes to clip to the horses which helped.

I was worried the the horses might freak because of all the surrounding flames and glowing embers but they seemed follow my lead ok. I wanted so bad to get better photos but I also wanted to help these people and horses so I had to make do with the situation.

After we got all the horses to the safety of the barn, we picked up shovels and started shoveling dirt on all the various burning flames and embers flying all around towards the barn. I didn't know these people or barely what I was doing but they were thankful for the extra help, so I kept working as long as I could.

It was just two ladies there to safeguard about 40 horses, they wanted one of us to stay but we couldn't. Getting in and out of this area was so difficult. The smoke was so thick I could barely breathe or see.

I told the ladies I would come back and I asked them what they needed, they said water and buckets to give water to the horses, (their water was not flowing). I was afraid the cops would not let me return to the area if I left, then I found a working hose and many buckets at a neighbors ranch. So I filled a bunch of buckets with water, put them in my jeep and returned back to the horses and ladies. They said I was like an angel and thanked me for the help.

There were a number of cops around questioning my movements but I had to just confidently act my part, like I belonged there, if I was to get through and continue to help these horses and ladies. At one point I asked why there were so many cops suddenly out on the street and he said to protect homes from the looters who were out doing their thing.

The neighbor from where I borrowed the water and buckets was also frantic and asking for help. One of her hoses had sprung a major leak and she asked if I could do something about that. I said I had duct tape in my jeep that could probably fix it. So with my flashlight I searched for and found the duct tape and I wrapped it in tight layers across the hose.

Some cops came down the long driveway and were announcing that we had to leave because of the mandatory evacuation. The lady told me they could go to hell because her life was tied up in this multi-million $$ home / horse ranch property, she had just acquired the whole thing in her recent divorce, and there was no way she was going to leave. So she asked me to drive down the hill to avoid the cops and to check on a major finger of the fire advancing up the hill in her direction.

When we got down the hill we could see huge flames and widespread fire working its way up the canyon. There were people there with hoses fighting the fire back from their home also. They wanted to know if there were more threatening flames on the other side of the hill where we had come from. I told them that the worst of it was right where they were.

All I can say is that this was the most intense part of this entire firestorm for me, helping to save these horses and the ranches. I was especially glad I could do something worthwhile to help, rather than just look around and take photos.

This photo was picked up by Yahoo News, so the views are skyrocketing. Also it is moving up

in Explore. It's from my iphone cam and I'm thrilled because this is the proof I was looking for to help people understand (including me) it is the photographer, not the camera that counts.

Gray and green woodpeckers are often confused. Both are indistinguishable from the color of their plumage.

The safest distinguishing feature is the black stripe, which in the gray woodpecker only extends from the beak to the eye. In the green woodpecker, it is wider and protrudes beyond the eye.

In the male gray woodpecker, only the front part is red up to the middle of the head. In the male green woodpecker, the entire top of the head up to the neck is red as well as a narrow strip below the eye.

The green woodpecker has been increasing continuously for 20 years, while the much rarer gray woodpecker population is declining.

Thank you very much for all your visits, faves and

kind comments! Much appreciated!

For me, the safest place is out on a limb.

I have not always chosen the safest path. I've made my mistakes, plenty of them. I sometimes jump too soon and fail to appreciate the consequences. But I've learned something important along the way: I've learned to heed the call of my heart. I've learned that the safest path is not always the best path and I've learned that the voice of fear is not always to be trusted.

The unprecedented cold spell we're experiencing is causing birds to seek shelter in the safest sanctuaries they can find. This morning dove arrived today and immediately moved into a dense spruce tree. These terribly cold conditions really can kill birds like this mourning dove that typically migrate south for the winter.

I miss the look of surrender in your eyes

The way your soft brown hair would fall

I miss the power of your kiss when we made love

Oh, but baby most of all

I miss my friend

The one my heart and soul confided in

The one I felt the safest with

The one who knew just what to say

To make me laugh again

Let the light back in

I miss my friend

I miss the colors that you brought into my life

Your golden smile with those blue-green eyes

And I miss your gentle voice

In lonely times like now

Sayin' it'll be alright

I miss my friend

The one my heart and soul confided in

The one I felt the safest with

The one who knew just what to say

To make me laugh again

Let the light back in

I miss my friend

I miss those times

I miss those nights

I even miss our silly fights

The makin' up, the mornin' talks

And those late afternoon walks

I miss my friend

The one my heart and soul confided in

The one I felt the safest with

The one who knew just what to say

To make me laugh again

Let the light back in

I miss my friend

I miss my friend

I miss my friend

Mmmm...

I miss my friend

The wooded mountain ranges of the Hunsrück are also known as "high forest".

At least in December 2022 there was something like winter here for a few days, as is so often the safest place at heights such as the Erbeskopf at over 800 m.

Where you’re safest and warm

Bring all that you are

You will always belong in my arms

Pillar Point Harbor is a protected harbor of refuge along the San Mateo County California Coast in the San Francisco area. Pillar Point Harbor is home port to a vital commercial fishing industry, to sport fishermen, and to pleasure boaters seeking the amenities this modern coastal harbor facility provides. The Harbor has 369 berths and an inner and outer breakwater, making it one of the safest harbors in the United States.

It doesn't seem like I will be going on holiday this year. Home just feels the safest place for me to be. So I will just have to make do with editing shots from my archives.

This photo was taken at the Kabuki-chou crossing on the Yasukuni Doori avenue. It is a classic location to take photos of Shinjuku.

Kabuki-chou was so named as there was a plan to relocate the Kabuki Theatre from Ginza. The plan did not realise but the name remained. A theatre was constructed instead by the Touhou movie company, which was rebuilt recently as the Godzilla building as you see today.

From the late 16th to early 17th century, there were groups of people who wore outlandish clothes with odd hairstyles, involved in crimes and violence, and violated public morals and government orders. Kabuki originally meant such conducts. They may be a root of Yakuza gangs.

Izumono Okuni (出雲阿国), the founder of Kabuki, invented a dance performance influenced by their fashion and unusual aesthetic sense. Although Kabuki as a theatre-play is gentrified by now, actors' costumes, make-ups and conducts retain the original identity.

Kabuki-cho is said to be the safest gangtown in the world. It is safe as far as you behave properly, but it is a fact that there are offices of Yakuza here and there. Kabuki-cho sounds like a suitable name for the original meaning of Kabuki.

Gary thank you for inspiration.

The flat-topped mountain on the right is called the "Hoher Ifen". It is 2230 metres high and best known for a part that is called "the Gottesacker Plateau", meaning something like "God's field", because it is full of caves and crevasses. This is because it consists of karst stone, which is easily eroded by water.

Well, we didn't walk there since it is safest only to do so when accompanied by a guide, but it seems many rare plants grow there. If you'd like to know more about Karst landscapes, read under my next photo [Explored on 28/08/2022, #94].

Not the safest image I have ever taken, wiring the steel mesh as the 220 volt neutral and a wire soldered onto the base contact of the bulb for the live.

The mesh was backed with tracing paper, and lit through with a circular gobo attached to a single strobe..

I Love the look of days gone by .. and having said that I wish to address all the "days that have gone by" recently for me since I have posted or fav'd. I've received many emails asking about access to the Great Salt Lake. For as massive as the lake is, access points are minimal and most primitive.

This is a typical shoreline view; if you get stuck out here, a tow will cost $550+. Just to the right of the sand tire tracks, that area is mud soft. Hiking/walking is a much safer option.

The easiest and safest lake access points are Antelope Island, The Great Saltair, and the Great Salt Lake State Park. This spot is none of those :-)

The Great Salt Lake - GPS is not the exact spot of the photo.

And a dream would be the safest place,

In a dream would be the best of place,

Even if it is only within a dream space.

I wish you would come and meet me..

Yes, I miss you today more than yesterday..

In fact, I miss you every other days too..

Sometimes the urge to turn back the clock;

Becomes unbearably strong and painful..

To hear your voice, or not at all..

But to see you again and see you smile..

What I would give up to feel you again..

Even if it is only within a dream space..

I wish you would come and meet me..

So much to tell and so much to share..

I wish you would come and meet me..

For I miss you....so much

The impala is one of the most common and graceful of all Africa’s antelopes. The name ‘Impala’ come from the Zulu language meaning ‘gazelle’. Most young impala are born around mid-day as this is the safest time to give birth since most of their enemies are resting. Half of newborn are killed by predators within the first few weeks of life. Impalas decrease their chances of attack when living in herds, they leap and scatter in all directions when being attacked to confuse the predator.

Alice pressed against the wall

So she can see the door

In case the laughing strangers crawl and

Crush the petals on the floor

Alice in her party dress

She thanks you kindly

So serene

To promise her a definition

Tell her where the rain will fall

Tell her where the sun shines bright

And tell her she can have it all

To promise her a definition

On Tuesday I had my first photo trip out since before lockdown. I decided that sunrise would probably be the safest and I was right, I had the whole place to myself. Not quite the sunrise I'd hoped for but I took this shortly afterwards. This is the newly renovated Halnaker windmill in Sussex. I found a tramline in the field to stand in and decided to go for a shallow depth of field with the crop blowing in the wind.

Thanks for viewing :-)

The Cold River is another nearby river with beautiful gorges and waterfalls. I probably shouldn't be here, not only because it's not the safest place for an old guy, but because it's posted. :-)

The bears moving over to the ninth hole to watch our finish and to get a better view of my drive. Taking the kids to their first golf tournament is exciting for these youngsters. I expect i will be asked to sign their golf hats when i finish.

Safest place on this course for bears is on the green. The sand traps on the other hand have a lot of activity.

For this week's challenge in 52WeeksforDogs group, it's reflections/mirrors.

After mucking around this morning with an indoor shoot, dabbing yummy gook on a mirror, hoping to get her to lick it ..

augh, she was just too quick for me - yes all that sorta stuff - decided to go with something I see Pips do every day..

So this arvie, off we went up the road from home, and hoped no oncoming drivers would spot me doing this !

Decided the safest way was full attention at the wheel, while snapping madly away blind, and hope for one in focus..
