Florida has both Red & Carolina saddlebags, while we have Carolina up here. This guy - looks like Tramea carolina - was especially vivid red! @ Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida on 9-13-22
Hello everyone,
Check out the size of this bee's saddlebag. It's really quite amazing how much pollen that they can carry around.
Thank you for taking the time to look and to leave me a comment. I do love hearing from you!
Have a fantastic day!

I stood in the yard watching this dragonfly go back and forth over and over and almost landing. I was lucky that he finally found a limb close to me and landed. I believe he is a red saddlebag dragonfly skimmer. Feel free to correct me. I loved how the light was shining on his wings!

Monochrome image of a discarded saddlebag propped against a tree in an old forest. Morning mist can be seen in the background.
This is a photograph that I took of a Black Saddlebag Skimmer in 2018 but never published the image. I've seen dozens of these in the refuge and not been able to get a good closeup shot as of yet. I went digging back into my files and located this one.
I don't see many of this species of dragonfly, so I was very happy when this guy posed for me on a dead tree branch higher than my head. I really like the wing pattern details here.
Carolina saddlebags glistening in the sun at the wetlands - from the archives. Colder here but sun is out - great day to get some shots! Happy Hug-a-bug Tuesday!
p.s. thanks to Sunshine this morning - everything looks good
the scientific name is in the tags, but "Black Saddlebags" is a whole lot more fun. a foreleg appears to be broken and wrapped around the neck, or it could be just an itch.......
I am seeing more dragonflies everyday. Lots of the early fliers, such as Eastern Pondhawks, Eastern Amberwings, Blue Dashers and plenty of bluet damselflies. Now the saddlebags are emerging too.

We had a fun visit to the wetlands on Sunday - and that evening we got some rain. Both Black and Carolina saddlebags were flying and perching. Got fairly close to this female w/golden spots. North Georgia
Perhaps resting up overnight while on migration. Photographed in the La Crosse Blufflands Conservancy.
A nice 10,000-foot lake just east of Yosemite National Park. It's always great to find a place like this with spectacular scenery but a tiny fraction of the crowds of the famous park. There is a 3.9 mile loop trail around the lake.

I was lucky to find this fairly lethargic female. The temperatures were in the mid sixties yesterday and made many of the dragons I was able to find much more cooperative. I worked her over with my macro rig pretty well.
