En memoria de Syd Barrett 1946 - 2006.
Recuerda cuando eras joven
Brillabas como el sol
Brilla, loco diamante
Ahora hay una mirada en tus ojos
Como hoyos negros en el cielo
Brilla, loco diamante
Fuiste atrapado en el fuego cruzado
De la niñez y el estrellato
Soplado en la brisa de acero
Vamos, tú, objetivo de risas lejanas
Vamos, extraño, leyenda, mártir, ¡y brilla!
Alcanzaste el secreto muy pronto
Lloraste por la luna
Brilla, loco diamante
Amenazado por las sombras de noche
Y expuesto a la luz
Brilla, loco diamante
Bien usaste tu acogida
Con precisión al azar
Montaste en la brisa de acero
Vamos, alucinante, observador de visiones
Vamos, pintor, flautista, prisionero, y ¡brilla!
Nadie sabes donde estás
Cuán cerca o cuán lejos
Brilla, loco diamante
Apila muchas más capas
Y estaré reuniéndome contigo allá
Brilla, loco diamante
Y nos asolearemos en la sombras
De los triunfos del ayer
Y navegaremos en la brisa de acero
Vamos, niño
Ganador y perdedor
Vamos minero de la verdad y la decepción, y ¡brilla!
Pink Floyd – Shine on you crazy diamond
This serrated-edge glossy postcard of a splash-less diver in Mono Lake, California, was issued as an insert in Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here vinyl album released on the Harvest label in 1975. The record, comprising just five tracks, represented the rise and fall of Syd Barrett, the estranged former band member who suffered from severe mental illness. Its most famous track is ‘Shine on you crazy diamond’, a 14-minute nine-part composition written by David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Richard Wright.
The colour is deliberately dull, indicating the irony of the typical postcard message (“having a lovely time, wish you were here”).
Pink Floyd were one of the most commercially successful and influential rock groups in the history of popular music, selling more than 250 million albums worldwide. Talking of which, here's David Gilmour’s floating recording studio on the River Thames at Hampton.
Image featured in EXPLORE (though given this is merely a scan of an old postcard, I do wonder why!)

Echoes
Pink Floyd
Composição: Waters, Wright, Mason e Gilmour
Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no one show us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stares and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light
Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
And no one speaks
And no one tries
And no one flies around the sun
Cloudless every day you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall comes streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning
And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

Hard to believe, but today marks the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon album that was released on March 1, 1973 for the U.S., and later on March 16, 1973 for the U.K.
One of the best selling and iconic albums of all time, DSOTM sold estimated sales of 45-50 million album copies. It holds the records for both the consecutive and total weeks on Billboard's top 200 album sales chart. From its release in March of 1973 to 1988 it was on the Billboard's chart for 741 consecutive weeks, and as of today, March of 2023 on the charts for 972 weeks.
In 1973 I got my first Hi-Fi system from having two morning paper routes. I asked my friends what should be the first album to buy, and they definitely said Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon since it was fresh out on release. After getting the first U.S. pressing, I was so blown away by the great sound quality of the album, and also the outstanding job done on the production of the album. I went through three albums of DSOTM until I bought mt first CD in 1984. Personally, DSOTH is in my top three favorite albums, if not my favorite of all times.
Two years ago I was able to get a super clean 1979 MoFi (MFSL) original master recording from a person who only played it a couple of times, which the album cover is seen in the photo. Also in the photo is a 1978 Marantz 6370Q turntable, and 1978 Marantz 2500 stereo receiver.
"She took a long cold look at me
and smiled and gazed all over my arm
she loves to see me get down to ground
she hasn't time just to be with me
her face between all she means to be
to be extreme, just to be extreme
a broken pier on the wavy sea
she wonders why for all she wants to see...
But I got up and I stomped around
and hid the piece where the trees touch the ground...
The end of truth that lay out the time
spent lazing here on a painting dream
a mile or more in a foreign clime
to see farther inside of me.
And looking high up into the sky
I breathe as the water streams over me..."

I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like.
It's got a basket, a bell that rings
And things to make it look good.
I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.

Journey through time and space with Syd and friends:
* Interstellar Overdrive (1967)
Left: For hundreds of generations, the Tesla Brotherhood of Space Folders Unlimited had what they thought was an unbreakable monopoly on interstellar travel and commerce. Dreadfully expensive, as well as destructive to the very fabric of space-time, the company had long convinced the natural sapient, and even their own wealthy shareholders, that there was no alternative to their space folding technology. The company motto: "Expand or die! Have a nice day."
Center: "Let there be more light." It is now the year 10191 AD. From the depths of space came a brilliant flash of light, music and forbidden colors. Strangely, the electrifying music could travel in the vacuum of space. Even stranger was the sudden appearance of ancient and well-used Danelectro 3021 electric guitars in the hands of everyone. But no one but the Tesla shareholders had the zuleks for music lessons or even amplifiers. Lord Tesla itself dismissed it all as "so much cave gas."
Right: Years later, a strange mostly-human with terrible fingers from the planet Hammersmith IV, a doctor some say, demonstrated the true nature of the guitars. His motto: "Expand your mind and live! Now, fly!" The space folders were now obsolete.

Two songs, one vision:
* See Emily Play (promotional film; 1967)
* Julia Dream (1968)
Although "Jugband Blues" (1968) was the last Syd Barrett song published for a Pink Floyd album, I believe "See Emily Play" is the song that better represents the change that Syd's reliable and stable replacement, David Gilmour, would bring to the band, starting with "Julia Dream," written by Roger Waters.
"See Emily Play":
Put on a gown
That touches the ground (Ah-ooh)
Float on a river
Forever and ever, Emily (Emily)
"Julia Dream":
Every night I turn the light out
Waiting for the velvet bride
Will the scaly armadillo
Find me where I'm hiding?

The Floyd had just stepped out of Abbey Road Studios for some candy and currant buns when this happened:
* Pow R. Toc H. (1967)
It was Brother Gregory! And he was chasing them with a plate of English oysters. Nobody expects an English oyster inquisition!
After being chased off Earth and around the solar system by Gregory, Pink managed to evade the monk and land the band's battered starship on the outskirts of Poperinge, Belgium, for a much needed rest and repairs. Eventually, they made their way back to Abbey Road to record their experience, word for word.

Think Pink Floyd and think Syd Barrett. Think Syd Barrett and think Cambridge. Think Cambridge:-)
Syd Barrett was a founding member of Pink Floyd and the main man until 1968. He was a Cambridge lad. As were fellow Pink Floyd members David Gilmour and Roger Waters. Syd's impact on the band was massive. And that was even when he left due to mental illness. Many Pink Floyd tracks have references to Syd, including this well known track in Dark Side of the Moon (1973).
