Designed at Ogle Design as the Ogle SX250 prototype and put into production by Reliant, the Scimitar was originally launched as the SE4 (A) in 1964, powered by a Ford S6 engine of 2553cc.

In late 1966 the SE4B was introduced, Ford dropped their 2.6 S6 engine, in favour of a new 3.0 V6 Essex engine, for its latest Zephyr and Zodiac.

This meant that Reliant had to do a good deal of development work to the existing Scimitar GT to enable the new more powerful engine to fit and obtain best performance and handling. As the Essex engine was shorter, it was mounted further back in the bulkhead to help improve weight distribution. The lower wishbones were re-positioned, the tower structures and cross members were reinforced and an anti-roll bar was fitted. Other modifications included replacing the wire wheels with wider steel wheels as standard, and the fitting of a higher-ratio rear axle. The interior was updated .

In 1967 Reliant introduced their third and final version of the V6 Scimitar GT, the SE4C, built alongside the 3 litre, it was introduced to widen the Scimitars appeal and marketed as a cheaper version of the SE4B. Cars were powered by Ford's 2.5-litre version of the V6 Essex engine, giving a top speed of 110mph and improved fuel economy. The SE4C was priced approx £ 120 less than its big brother, externally the only difference between the 3-litre and 2.5-litre versions was the small badge on the boot giving the engine size.

Ogle Design was established as a British design consultancy company in 1954 by David Ogle with headquarters in Letchworth, Herts. and produced many successful designs of industrial and household products.which include the Bush TR82 portable radio in 1959, the Chopper bicycle for Raliegh in 1970. Some of the companies most noteable designs were in the Automotive field with the BSA Rocket and Triumph Trident for British Small Arms-Triumph motorcycles. The Reliant Scinitar GTE, Bond Bug and Reliant Robin for Reliant. the Plaxton Panarama Elite, Duple Dominant and Plaxton Paramount coach bodies.Modular truck cab for Shelvoke and Drewry and Dennis refuse collection vehicles and fire appliances. The Leyland Roadtrain truck and LeylandAtlantean bus for Leyland trucks. The Turkish Anadol A1 and the Landspeeder for George Lucas, Star Wars films.

Between 1959-62 they also built a series of complete cars The first was the 1.5 based on an extended Riley 1.5 chassis with BMC B series 1500 cc engine. The two-door, four-seater coupé-styled body was built of glass fibre. It was capable of nearly 90 mph (140 km/h) and eight were made with a price tag of £1574.

But the best known of these vehicles was the Ogle SX1000 introduced in 1962 and Ogle design based on the running gear of the Mini. The conversion cost £550 plus the customer supplied base car. Later in 1962, complete cars became available with the 997 cc Cooper version costing £1176. Any of the Mini engines could be specified up to the Mini Cooper S unit which topped out at 110 mph (180 km/h). The cars were fully equipped and featured a padded dashboard for increased safety.[1] It is thought that 66 were made, with Jack Brabham buying one for his wife Betty for their first anniversary. Sadly David Ogle was killed at the wheel of his own SX1000 in 1962, when Tom Karen took over as managing director, and car production ceased. The final car was the SX250, an updated Daimler Dart built in 1962. Two were made but Daimler was not interested and the design was sold to Reliant where it became the basis of the Scimitar GT which was launched in 1964.

The company continued to thrive under Tom Karen and many of the above mentioned designs were formulated during his tenure. A separate divisions were formed for product and transport design in 1974 and in 1999 Ogle Models and Prototypes sold the design business to Ogle Noor

Based on a design by David Ogle as the Ogle SX250, which had originally been based on the Daimler Dart with Daimler Dart SP250 chassis and running gear. The car had been privately commissioned by Boris Forter, managing director of the Helena Rubenstein Company (UK), who later had another one built for his girlfriend.

Reliant approached Ogle and asked to buy the rights for it, after some changes to the bodyshell and modifications to fit a Reliant Sabre chassis and running gear the new Scimitar took shape. The Scimitar retained the Ford straight six engine from the Sabre, but with triple SU carburettors as standard it now produced 120 bhp and propelled the car to a top speed of 117 mph. It was launched at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1964; priced at £1,292
