This hummingbird has the longest bill in relation to its body size of any bird in the world. They specialize in feeding on long tubular flowers where other hummingbirds can’t reach the nectar. They are found in elevation ranging from 2,500-3,500m (8,240-11,550ft)

At a wedding I shot ages ago, the kids changed into street clothes and played with fun toys at the reception. I snagged this pic of this kid with his lightsaber.
It is a long exposure with a bit of fill flash at the end.

The Sword-billed Hummingbird is a species from South America and has the longest bill of any Trochilidae species, I almost forgot to press the shutter on the camera when I first saw it.. Usually found in forests at high elevations, I believe this one to be a female.
the only bird with a bill longer than its body! Very challenging to photograph mid-air, it does not visit feeders.

Located between the Perseus and Sagittarius arms of our galaxy, is the Orion spur . This minor arm is home to our solar system, and named for its most prominent constellation, Orion. Although the sword asterism appears as a line of 3 stars, below Orion's belt, it actually contains a massive molecular cloud where new stars are being born. At approx. 30-40 light years in diameter, its far from being the largest in our galaxy; however, it's close proximity (1.3k ly) makes it the brightest in the northern hemisphere.

Unmistakable. This ridiculous hummingbird has the longest bill in relation to its body size of any bird in the world. In addition to the striking bill, look for the overall muted green body color with a bronzy head. Found in the temperate zone of the Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia, from around 2,500m to 3,500m. Occurs in montane forest and edges, where it uses its bill to feed from long tubular flowers. Visits feeders.

Sword-billed hummingbird, Quito, Ecuador, March 16, 2016.

Ensifera ensifera
This is the only bird species with a bill length that exceeds the body length.
I returned yesterday from an 8 day trip to Ecuador. This trip concentrated on the Northwestern part of the country.
This is one of the coolest hummingbirds, imo.
Sword-billed Hummingbird
The sword-billed hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera), also known as the swordbill, is a neotropical species of hummingbird from the Andean regions of South America. It is the only member in the genus Ensifera. Among the largest species of hummingbird, it is characterized by its unusually long bill, being the only bird to have a beak longer than the rest of its body, excluding the tail. It uses its bill to drink nectar from flowers with long corollas and has coevolved with the species Passiflora mixta. While most hummingbirds preen using their bills, the sword-billed hummingbird uses its feet to scratch and preen due to its bill being so long.

I seem to be unable to stay in my usual groove here for MELO... so here's a fun 1:1 sword that's way unlike anything I've ever done before!
I was hoping to finish this in time for Summer Joust, but although I did finish a prelim version of the sword, there was no way I was getting photos edited in time--and if you're not going to do it right, no sense in doing it at all! So, I built myself some spikes and borrowed my brother's epic cape ;)
As for the sword itself, it's not exactly swooshable, but it's sturdy and moves well through the air if you're careful. And it is super fun!
I also got to integrate some brand new constraction pieces I picked up just last Friday, so that was cool!

An adaptation of evolution to feed in deeper trumpeter flowers and have exclusivity to different nectar sources has led way to the guys bill/Sword being as long as his body. Very sought after species in Ecuador and plentiful at Guango Lodge
Make it a great week..ya have a choice ya know.
Thanks for the interest in my work and leaving a comment is always appreciated.
