Car 871 (SW6, 1941) at the Line 82 terminal, Leeds Street at Irving Street, Footscray.
This lively suburb (which is now part of Maribyrnong) is known for its diverse array of shopping, dining and nightlife.
Footscray is also known for an unusual development in Melbourne tramway history. No direct tramway was built between central Melbourne and Footscray, because the railway provided adequate service between the City and Footscray. However, the need for local transportation led to creation of the Footscray Tramways Trust. This became part of MMTB before opening - on 1921 September 6. The three lines in Footscray were not connected with the remainder of the MMTB system - until 1954, when a connection from Maribyrnong was built. The local lines were closed in 1962, but Line 82 continues to serve Footscray.
