Battersea is situated in the London Borough of Wandsworth, on the south bank of the River Thames opposite Chelsea. It was opened in 1858.

Battersea Park is an 200 acre (83-hectare) green space: by comparison Hyde Park covers 142 hectares (350 acres) and Kensington Gardens covers 111 hectares (275 acres),giving an overall area of 253 hectares (625 acres), making the combined area larger than the Principality of Monaco (196 ha/484 acres) but smaller than New York's Central Park (341 ha/843 acres)..

The park occupies what used to be a mix of marshland reclaimed from the Thames, and land formerly used for market gardens that served London.

Formerly known as "Battersea Fields", it was once a popular spot for duelling. On March 21, 1829, the Duke of Wellington and the Earl of Winchilsea met on Battersea fields to settle a matter of honour.

The original designs for the park were laid out between 1846 and 1864.

Battersea Park hosted the first football game played under the rules of the recently formed Football Association on 9 January 1864

Roger Hiorns was awarded the Turner Prize 2009.

In his encouragement of the viewing public to share the same subjective encounter, he created an installation in South London where he materially claimed an entire ex-council flat, growing within it an industrialized scale of copper sulphate crystals. 75,000 litres of solution were pumped into the social housing council flat to create a crystalline growth on the walls, floor, ceiling and bath of this abandoned dwelling. The project was called 'Seizure' and was produced by Artangel. In his passing of the object through inventive conditioning impulse and experience, in embodying the uncertainty of new life-politics.

Chelsea Physic Garden having a micro climate, close to the Thames river, as well as being protected by high walls and buildings around its perimeter: these conditions favour the blooming of certain plants earlier than elsewhere in London.

How lovely: in the 'decommisssioned" cemetery of St Luke's Chelsea the old denizens put to rest in the 19th c have great fun: - here their bodies are constantly watered by the visiting canine population of Chelsea - elsewhere they are lulled in the constant hum of vehicles accessing the tarmac leading to the parish church. Nearby the same graveyard is turned into a football pitch for the benefit of entertaining the "dearly departed". Equal fun must have the Cadogan family Patrons of this parish church, as they were put to rest in the church vault: this was transformed into a club for the deprived youngsters who can play pool in good company! Who said that the CoE is not a progressive religion and a great leveler? The Earls Cadogan have never had it so good!

If Roman Catholic is a good religion to die in, then certainly the CoE beats it by far in offering unlimited fun in after life! Take your pick!
