Sir Kenneth MacMillan 1929-1992 Choreographer lived here

There used to be a kennel out the back. When I was very small I was a pageboy at my Auntie's wedding, and there's a photo of me in this kennel.

Wandsworth/Southfields

The Postcard

A postcard bearing no publisher's name. The image is a glossy real photograph. The card was posted in Bournemouth using stamps to the value of 2d. on Thursday the 3rd. August 1950. It was sent to:

Mrs. Bishop,

24, Clonmore Street,

Southfields,

London SW18.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"Having a nice holiday

at Chandler's Ford,

although the weather

could be nicer.

Going to Bournemouth

tomorrow, will think of

you going through the

forest.

Hope you are both well,

see you soon,

Much love,

Dora."

Winchester Cathedral

Winchester Cathedral is the longest intact medieval cathedral in the world, stretching an immense 558 feet (170m) through the heart of England's ancient capital.

Begun in 1079 under William the Conqueror, this architectural masterpiece spans Norman and Perpendicular Gothic styles, and serves as a physical timeline of English history.

-- Key Highlights

-- Jane Austen’s Grave: The celebrated novelist is buried in the north aisle of the nave; she spent her final weeks in Winchester before passing away in 1817.

-- The Atmospheric Crypt: A 900-year-old Norman crypt that frequently floods during wet seasons, beautifully mirroring Sound II, a famous standalone silhouette sculpture by Antony Gormley. To see Sound II, please search for the tag 23WCC24

-- Royal Mortuary Chests: The cathedral holds the remains of early Saxon kings (including King Canute) and ancient monarchs, though their bones were heavily mixed by Roundheads during the English Civil War.

-- The Winchester Bible: Housed inside the permanent Kings & Scribes exhibition, this magnificent 12th.-century book is one of the finest surviving examples of Romanesque illumination.

-- Visitor Information

-- Opening Hours: Open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Sundays from 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM.

-- Admission & Passes: General admission (2026) is £14 (children 11 and under enter free). Tickets act as an Annual Pass, granting unlimited returns for 12 months.

Winchester Cathedral in the Charts

Winchester Cathedral has even had a song written about it.

"Winchester Cathedral" became a hit record in late 1966, reaching number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on the 3rd. December, and peaking at number four on the UK Singles Chart.

It was recorded by The New Vaudeville Band and released on the 26th. August 1966. It sold over 3 million copies worldwide, and was later covered by Frank Sinatra, Lulu, and Peggy Lee. Here are the lyrics:

{Whistling opening}

Winchester Cathedral

You're bringing me down

You stood and you watched as

My baby left town

You could have done something

But you didn't try

You didn't do nothing

You let her walk by

Now everyone knows just how much

I needed that gal

She wouldn't have gone far away

If only you'd started ringing your bell

Winchester Cathedral

You're bringing me down

You stood and you watched as

My baby left town

Oh-bo-de-oh-do, oh-bo-de-oh-do

Oh-bo-de-oh-do, do-do-duh.

The King's Royal Rifle Corps War Memorial

The King's Royal Rifle Corps War Memorial can be seen between the trees in the Cathedral Close.

Unveiled on the 26th. May 1922, it honours the fallen soldiers of the regiment from the First and Second World Wars.

The Grade II* listed monument features a realistic bronze sculpture of a rifleman created by notable sculptor John Tweed.

The statue depicts a rifleman in full service dress holding a Lee-Enfield rifle.

Inscriptions include the regimental badge, the Corps' motto Celer et Audax (Swift and Bold), and dedications for both world wars.

The Start of American Involvement in Vietnam

So what else happened on the day that Dora posted the card?

Well, on the 3rd. August 1950, thirty-five men from the U.S. Army arrived in Saigon as part of the American Military Assistance Advisory Group.

Sent to assist the French government in the training of the new Army of the Republic of Vietnam, the group began a nearly 25 year American involvement in South Vietnam.

Exactly two weeks later, on the 17th. August 1950, in what would later be called the "Hill 303 massacre", 39 captured American soldiers were executed after being taken as prisoners of war by North Korea.

Kim Qwong Toaek, the North Korean officer who had ordered the killing of the captives, was himself taken prisoner during a counterattack by U.S. soldiers.

-- 'But You Didn't'

'But You Didn't' is a poem by Merrill Glass. Here it is:

'Remember the time you lent

me your car and I dented it?

I thought you'd kill me...

But you didn't.

Remember the time I forgot to

tell you the dance was formal,

and you came in jeans?

I thought you'd hate me...

But you didn't.

Remember the times I'd flirt with

other boys just to make you jealous,

and you were?

I thought you'd drop me...

But you didn't.

There were plenty of things you did

to put up with me, to keep me happy,

to love me, and there are so many

things I wanted to tell you when you

returned from Vietnam...

But you didn't'.

A Refusal by the United Nations

Also on that day, the UN Security Council voted 8–1 against a new Soviet proposal to admit the People's Republic of China to the United Nations.
