rpn,

After setting out a couple of coil cars, two Cleveland Works Railway switchers start to head off for their next job on a beautiful April afternoon. Cleveland Works Railway switches the Cleveland-Cliffs steel mills south of downtown Cleveland, along with a couple of other customers like the Zaclon plant to the left.

31 years ago VTR SW1500 501 is assigned to the Florence Switcher. The VTR had a pair of these, the 501 was lettered for the VTR and the 502 was lettered for the CLP. The job is seen crossing Vermont route 3.

A lone SW1500 leads "Run 8", KCS train Y-KC108-20", across the AS&B Bridge over the Missouri River with a transfer from NS's Avondale Yard to KCS's Knoche Yard.

Lately, KCS transfers can draw anything from road power to Geeps, but seeing a switcher being used is downright rare, as the few that remain in town are typically only used on industry and yard jobs in and around Knoche. 3/20/22.

IHB #4020, the Harbor's ex-CN widecab GP40-2, works the Blue Island hump as IHB #1505 pulls across CP Harvey after switching the transload off Halsted on a late February afternoon.

KCS SW1500 no. 4349 pulls down into the east end of Knoche Yard for a new cut of cars to sort, as the late afternoon sun lights the scene beautifully.

This was on the KCS' final day of operations, and this particular yard crew had just rolled by the business train, freshly polished GE's, and tents filled with local dignitaries that were being courted (flic.kr/p/2otb8iM), all while they just went about their jobs as usual, though with the added stress of having 300 bosses less than a mile away, along with all of the local news channels, and railfans like me hanging out to watch. I can only imagine what a weird day it must have been for all of these crews.

New England Southern's SW1500 has the first half of the loaded military train in hand as it heads south past Brochu Nursery in Concord on a beautiful morning. With the former B&M White Mountain Branch only seeing a few freight moves a year, typically just 2 cars at a time for 3M in Tilton, this move from Canterbury to Concord was quite a sight.

Metra SW1500's #8 and #9 lead retired highliners across the St. Charles Airline bridge in downtown Chicago Illinois

GMTX 129 (ex-SP 2551) - one of two SW1500s used by this operation - works storage tracks on the dry side of the flood wall near the Watco Sauget Cahokia Marine Terminal in Sauget, IL; across the Mississippi River from downtown St. Louis. I rarely see them moving or outside the fence here, so this was a nice find after an early release from work for the holidays. I believe this is ex-GM&O trackage.

Sadly, the Cahokia Power Plant on site here, long an iconic 6-stack coal-fired behemoth visible from miles around, has largely been dismantled and will soon be completely gone.

Former Frisco MP15 3704 and SW1500 3429 switch Jeff Foster's Duluth warehouse in sweet late afternoon light.

A solo Union Railroad SW1500 shoves a cut of loaded coke hoppers into the yard on the east end of the US Steel Clairton Mill Works in Clairton, Pennsylvania along the banks of the Monongahela River. The crew will break up this cut of cars as they sort the loads for NS from those for the Union Railroad.

After receiving track from CN RTC, the 114 job with IHB 1522 (SW1500) shoves across EJ&E Bridge 631 over the Indiana Harbor Canal, enroute for IHB Whiting Yard on the CN Whiting Branch in East Chicago, IN. Taken: 1-10-20. With IHB handling most of the traffic on this branch, CN RTC still controls the bridge after acquiring the EJ&E in 2009, even though CN runs a couple trains a week into Whiting Yard for interchange with IHB and the BP Refinery.

An SD70ACe is on the point of UP train UEOTT1-30 threading its way through the West Bottoms at Hickory St on the UP KC Metro Sub, coming off Main Track 1 onto Main Track 3 to head for North Cypress JCT via Big Mary. his engine began in October of 1968 as the SLSF No. 323. After the Burlington Northern absorbed the Frisco in 1980, it eventually became the BN No. 28 and wore Cascade Green, later being dressed in Heritage I paint when it became the BNSF No. 3408 after the merger with the Santa Fe. After BNSF retired it off the roster, ITS picked it up and painted it in the red paint scheme it wears today. For a time during its career on the ITS, it worked at IFG at Grandview, MO along the KCS main. 2/2/25.
