An eastbound C&NW Bird headed for Canal Street Yard on the CJ waits at Ash Street, blocked by the IMX Yard switcher and ICG SW14 No. 1454 leading a westbound local freight, in April 1987.

An ICG local freight behind an SW14 has made its statutory stop at Brighton Park, in April 1987. Brighton Park was a non-interlocked crossing at-grade and trains in all directions had to stop and wait for a signal from the Conrail switchtender who operated the installation. Here, the switchtender has raised the semaphore signal to clear, allowing the train to cross the CJ, B&OCT and the former PRR Panhandle.

ETR 104 (ex IC/ICG SW14 1475) and ETR 102 SW8 work the yard in Ojibway.

In an absolute stroke of luck I ended up by the Red Wing depot just before ADM shoved a cut of cars passed.

Illinois Central Gulf Railroad SW14 1415 near Carol Stream, Illinois on an unknown day in April 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1415 was built in December 1950 as IC SW7 9422 (c/n 11670) on EMD Order 4054, was renumbered to 422, rebuilt in 1978 to SW14 1415.

ICG caboose 199116 was built in 1951 by the PRR as class N8 number 478071, became PC 23282, was purchased by the ICG in 1974, and resides in a city park in Martin, Tennessee.

The old KSW2 Whiting job had EJ&E SW1000 #446 today with an IC SW14 trailing.

Omnitrax's Brownsville & Rio Grande operates a maze of trackage around the Port of Brownsville, TX, where this former IC SW14 is far from home rails. The crew is about to put her in the shops, ending a long day of switching about. July 2022.

RMPX 1402 still showed it's main features of a NW2, rebuilt by ICG at their Paducah Shops, it was an early SW14 rebuild. Waycross, Georgia March 2004 (Slide Scan)

The 8th WGRF photo op that I set up was one of my long time favorites, Allied Tube & Conduit. Through the years, I have photographed their plant switchers including a 25tonGE, SW1, SW7 and the current one, an SW14. Photographing this unit is tough, since I am standing on the raised concrete platform of the security guard's office! Prearrangement with the plant manager got us permission of this former IC SW14 (of which the former number is not clear!)

If this photo had been taken a few years ago, ETR would have most likely been pulling salt loads in this scene. However, ETR no longer services Windsor Salt and instead uses the spur to stage cars for ADM.

The recession and EHH were in the midst of inflicting their wrath on the CN's motive power fleet as 2008 dawned. This string of retired and sold units contained such goodies as ex Wisconsin Central SD40-2s, ex DM&IR SDMs, CN SW1200RSs, and even an IC SW14.

Illinois Central Gulf SW14 1435 at Memphis, Tennessee on March 15, 1985, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built by Electro-Motive Corporation in December 1939 as IC NW2 9150 ( c/n 928 ) on Order E285, it was renumbered to 1000. During 1980 it was rebuilt to SW14 1435, sold to NRE on June 8, 1998.

CPH 191H was one of two AEC Reliance 6MU4R fitted with Plaxton 'Panorama Elite' coachwork which were new to Thomas, West Ewell in May 1970. Sold to Tourist Coaches, London SW14 in 1983 it was still in use when photographed at the coach park in Hastings, East Sussex on June 14th 1992. At that time it was owned by Marbett Ltd (trading as G.N. Coaches), Balham.

Built in 1951, as a SW9 numbered IC 9443, IC 1482 pushes the RJY21 train through the Riverport Road crossing in South Memphis.

Illinois Central Gulf Railroad SW14 1501 at Hawthorne Yard in Cicero, Illinois on October 15,1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Also seen are SW14's 1500 and 1401.

Two of ICG's rebuilt SW14's lead a string of empty pig flats south through Brighton Park. The railroad's heritage that they're on is given away by the B&O style CPL signal. Brighton Park was quite a bottleneck back then with all trains having to stop and contact the switch tender for a signal to get across. It's less interesting today but a lot more fluid. I worked the RB desk the day they made the cutover and smiled all day long...

IC SW14 No. 1511 works the west end of Crawford Avenue Yard (former Chicago & Illinois Western), in July 1992. The IC Bridgeport District is seen behind.

SW14 1491 goes about its chores on the south end of Glenn Yard. Built in November 1951, this is the former C&IW SW7 #104.

It's not unusual to find both the 0700 and 0900 ETR jobs working Ojibway Yard at the same time. It is kind of rare however, to be able to photograph their entire roster in one photo without access to their engine shed on Lincoln Road. In this photo, the 0900 crew (107 and 108) have parked their power on the ladder track for a lunch break while the 0700 crew (105 and 104) prepare to take 5 tanks out of a storage line then make a lift at ADM before heading to interchange with CN.

Trains: ETR 0700 job with ETL 105 (SW1500) and ETL 104 (SW14).

A pair of SW14 switchers cross over Broadway headed toward the Sugar Services Yard, in Memphis, as RJY25. Today's train has IC 1499 and IC 1498 (CN colors) for the power.

An ETR job works the CP interchange next to CP's Windsor Yard. The Detroit skyline fills the background as 104 starts pulling to head over to CN to interchange. CP's "T" train interchange power can be seen sitting on one of the power tracks in Windsor Yard as well. The Detroit skyline is a view I will never get tired of looking at.

As i sat at the via station waiting for the sun to come out to shoot the 911, i head a clickity, clack and looked back just in time to see the 104 rolling past the station to switch at the end of the line in a seldom photographed portion of the ETR. The tracks ended right where i was standing but used to continue downtown to the station down there and the ferry slips.
