Brotherswater at the foot of the Kirkstone Pass as the A592 winds its way to Windermere between Hartsop Dodd & Stony Cove Pike/Caudale Moor on the left and Red Screes on the right.
Another shot from a brilliant, frosty weekend (plus some recent snow) spent with my daughter and son & girlfriend of the time.

Description
The scientific name for the Ruffed Grouse is Bonasa umbellus. Both terms are from the Latin: Bonasa means good when roasted and umbellus, a sunshade. This refers to the ruff or dark-coloured neck feathers that are particularly large in the male. When he is in display before the female, these are erected and surround his head almost like an umbrella. By nodding his head and ruffs, and spreading his tail and strutting, the male identifies himself to the female and encourages her advances.
The male Ruffed Grouse is about the size of a bantam chicken and weighs about 500 g. The females are smaller. Unlike the chicken, the grouse has a broad flat tail that is usually held down but that may be erected and spread into a half circle.
The dappled and barred plumage ranges in colour from pale grey through sombre red to rich mahogany. In the east, most grouse are predominantly grey, although some are red. Greys are in the majority in the central parts of the continent, and on the west coast most grouse are reddish brown.
The colours worn by the grouse are related to their habitat: the dark-coloured grouse inhabit dark forest, as on the coast; grey grouse live in lighter bush. This camouflage helps protect the grouse from their predators.
Males are hard to tell from females at a distance, but they are larger with larger ruffs and a longer tail. In the male the broad band of dark colour in the tail is usually unbroken.
The Ruffed Grouse is frequently called the “partridge.” This leads to confusion with the Gray, or Hungarian, Partridge, which was introduced to Canada from Europe. The Ruffed Grouse is only distantly related to the Gray Partridge, which is a bird of open areas, not woodlands.

Here is a collection of flowers for the Smile in Saturday theme "Flowers in vertical photo". Apart from the dahlias the flowers are from my garden. The dahlias come from a cut flower field in my neighbourhood where I often go to take photos but I only rarely buy flowers there. :) HSoS !

This will be my last post till July 9th because we are leaving for Connecticut this afternoon to hit the beaches and visit my family and friends being that I couldn't fit everyone in my suitcase when I made my life changing move to the middle of nowhere...I mean beautiful Indiana!! ;)) See everyone when I get back and hope i don't get withdrawal symptoms from Flickr on the beach!
Being away from city lights and closer to nature enables us to witness simple fascinations. The birds in the yard and trees and the squirrels scurrying around for their food supplies is what I watch instead of morning T.V. A wonderful sunrise or sunset here gives us the warmth of knowing there’s a “Power” here much greater than our own at work here. That power gives us the creek out back giving life to the fish the frogs and whatever they require to live on. The deer here are plentiful and watching them scurry around the property leaves us again feeling a part of Nature not separate from it. Truly, we feel that “Beauty Surrounds Us.” The pandemic forces us to be at home more than ever. We are fortunate to be in such a beautiful and peaceful area and for that we are very grateful. Shwedagon stupa is surrounded by Buddhist shrines that are installed with Nat statues and Manussihas (man-lions) at four corners.
Nats are spirits worshipped in Myanmar closely associated with Buddhism. There are 37 Nats of human figure; they were deified after their unfortunate deaths. There are Nats that do not have human figures as well.
Nat worship is probably a syncretism of Buddhism and autochthonous animistic religions like those found in other Asian countries like Thailand and Japan.
People in Myanmar prefer jade colour or pale green. Combination of gold and jade is typically Myanmar.

This week's them of the Smile on Saturday group is "Iridescent". The only object with iridescent colours I could think of was this peacock feather which is actually a toy and belongs to my cats. I added the teddy bear for a certain cuteness factor and some other colours for additional interest. :) HSoS !
