On the left are pieces of reused concrete we used to protect the outflow pipe from erosion and to establish a new orifice size. This orifice size set the outflow rate for the whole system allowing all four basins to fill up and sediments to start settling from the still waters. On the right is one of the logs that were replaced in the new basins after clearing, grading and planting. During one of the storm events the log floated 100 yds to the outflow pipe. It floated over all of the young willows that were submerged in the water as none of them were damaged by this log float.

This was one of the re-placement logs that we reserved from clearing and put back into the basins for habitat. No evidence of plant material disturbance was found - this log floated from where it was placed to the outflow culvert. The culvert works just fine with the log there, water finds its way around and over it. The log may even encourage ponding and slow release, the design goal of the weirs and the culvert.

Willow shoots are shown in the foreground. These will grow vigorously producing many very straight branches ideal for basket or fence weaving. Willow can also be used as a biomass fuel - it is a carbon neutral fuel, meaning that the amount of CO2 that the plant absorbs during its growing life is equal to the amount of CO2 released by its harvest, transport and incineration.
