SUMMARY photos on Flickr

This pretty cosmic cloud lies some 1,500 light-years away, nested securely within the boundaries of the southern constellation Fornax. Recognized as a planetary nebula, it spans about 3 light-years with its shape and colour being reminiscent of a blue robin's egg. NGC 1360 doesn't represent a beginning though. Instead it corresponds to a brief and final phase in the evolution of an aging star. In fact, visible in this image is the central star of NGC 1360 is known to be a binary star system likely consisting of two evolved white dwarf stars, less massive but much hotter than the Sun. Their intense and otherwise invisible ultraviolet radiation has stripped away electrons from the atoms in the surrounding gaseous shroud. The predominant blue-green hue of NGC 1360 seen here is the strong emission produced as electrons recombine with doubly ionized oxygen atoms.

Polaris and IFN Space Dust by Eric Smith

Polaris is a star in the northern circumpolar constellation of Ursa Minor and is commonly called the North Star or Pole Star.

With an apparent magnitude of around 2, it is the brightest star in the constellation and is readily visible to the naked eye at night.

The position of the star lies less than 1° away from the north celestial pole, making it the current northern pole star.

The stable position of the star in the Northern Sky makes it useful for astrophotographer in the Northern hemisphere to align our telescopes with the central axis of the Earth. [Wiki]

Imaged over 11 nights in June and July 2024 while waiting for my main target to reach altitude.

I have always wanted to capture the IFN (Integrated Flux Nebula) around our pole star in the Northern hemisphere.

I thought that while I am waiting for my main target to rise in altitude, just sitting on Polaris would be a cool idea.

The main problem is guiding your telescope at the pole. In the end none of the frames were guided, Plate solving was interesting too. I attempted to centre the star but the mount would never end up plate solved and locked on. The solution was to place Polaris off centre. The result was that I obtained a better view of the IFN surrounding the star.

735 x 2 minute images were originally taken without a filter and reduced down to the best 349. This left me with over 11 hours of the best frames to process.

I am very pleased with my first attempt. I must look at either making a mosaic or using a wider FOV telescope to feature more of the surrounding space dust.

In my prior post I featured a view of the Fort Smith Trolley. In addition to housing the streetcars the museum is also home to some standard gauge steam road equipment of which this is the standout. Frisco 4003 is a USRA light Mikado (2-8-2) built by Alco in 1919 originally intended for the Pennsylvania Railroad. However, for unknown reasons, the PRR rejected 33 of 38 locomotives in the order and the United States Railroad Administration reassigned 23 of them to the SLSF.

The locomotive regularly worked through Fort Smith during her career with the Frisco until being retired in 1952 and donated to the city two years later. For nearly a half century it was displayed in a city park until it was relocated to the museum. Despite missing its main rods it still looks good in fresh paint and was another pleasant surprise in this great little city.

The Frisco was much like the Santa Fe in that it was quite generous in offering steam engines for display vs. summarily scrapping them when the age of steam ended and thankfully more than two dozen survive in communities along the road's former territory.

It's that time again! by Elisafox22 off and on a bit!

Yes, we say goodbye to October today, and welcome in November 2021 tomorrow!

Here in Scotland we have 2 weeks ahead of COP26 in Glasgow, amid storms and flooding, hardly a welcoming start to either the month or the event!

October has been wet and windy too, with the winds blowing the leaves off the trees before any wonderful autumn colours can delight us. So my usual mix of landscape and still life contains quite a few outdoor shots from my archives! But I've enjoyed looking through the archives ... and finding plenty of shots I had forgotten about! And there are always plenty of home and garden subjects to inspire me. 😊

In Covid terms Scotland has emerged from 2 months of sky-high infection figures, and we are all praying that COP26 will not prove to be yet another 'super-spreader' event! Quite frankly we need a rest!! Personally we have just had our booster shots, which helps with the constant background anxiety level. But the prospect of another pandemic winter looms. I think that it will be another time when Flickr comes to the rescue and gives me something to look forward to ... challenges and fun ideas to keep me thinking and experimenting!

Once again, thanks to everyone who has visited my photostream and for the comments and faves. I hope the collage gives an enjoyable look back through October.

2021 Mileage Summary by Chris Lewis

Took this photo one year ago today. 2021 totals; December with 203 miles and a total of 3,121 miles for year. Not as many miles as last year (3,692).

667 of those miles were ridden on a Saris trainer, about 21% of total and at an average of 19.6 miles per one hour session. Not at all enjoyable but was a good excuse to listen to Acid Rock at high volume (ipod with ear buds).....Trying to remember the shape of my name and swallowing the colors of the sounds I hear!
