My last morning in Jackson Hole that I could spend photographing the landmarks from my September trip. I almost didn't get up until I looked out my window and saw these clouds. I could only hope for them to move towards the barns and they did.

Here is the morning light hitting the barn. I was really hoping for a little mountain blue bird to fly into that window, but alas, none did!

As suggested by it’s Latin name the Jack Snipe is smaller than the Common Snipe and much more scarce. They are winter visitors to the UK but not often seen because they frequent marshland habitats.

They hide in the deep vegetation and often feed at night. I photographed this one feeding, moving slowly probing the wet ground for invertebrates. They have a curious slow bobbing motion as they search for food and rely on their amazing camouflage to remain undetected by predators.

It was a rare treat that I will always remember.

As its English names suggest, the Gatekeeper (also known as the Hedge Brown) is often encountered where clumps of flowers grow in gateways and along hedgerows and field edges. It is often seen together with the Meadow Brown and Ringlet. This Gatekeeper was seen on heathland in the New Forest, Hampshire.

If crowds and tourists are not your thing than I would suggest a visit to Schwäbisch Hall if you are near the area it makes for a peaceful yet interesting stop over. I would have loved to stayed longer or even overnight but unfortunately I cant stay everywhere, this is the last picture I am posting for Hall.

Pictured here is the left channel of the Kocher river and the old covered bridge that crosses from the lower town to the parks area. I hope you enjoyed my little tour of Hall and follow me on to see Bad Wimpfen an old spa town and the start of my drive up the Neckar River heading to Heidelberg. Below this paragraph is the driving route you to can use if interested on google maps.

The Carolina chickadee is a small passerine bird in the tit family Paridae. It is often placed in the genus Parus with most other tits, but mtDNA cytochrome b sequence data and morphology suggest that separating Poecile more adequately expresses these birds' relationships.(Wiki)

Due to its diet the golden monkey prefers a habitat with abundant fruit and bamboo. The golden monkey moves in between areas depending on the season. During the season where ripe fruit is available they remain in those areas. With the beginning of the rainy season, bamboo is shooting and the golden monkeys move to such habitats. Results of studies indicate that if there is an area consisting of mixed fruit and bamboo, the golden monkeys tend to frequent that area more than areas consisting of only bamboo. Authors of one study reported that golden monkeys are most frequently seen in bamboo forests, suggesting that the species prefers this habitat.

The golden monkey can travel in various group sizes, and have been seen in small groups of three up to large groups of 62 monkeys. The groups that are found at higher elevations tend to be smaller. The golden monkey will often return to one of several different sleeping areas after a day of feeding. The monkeys often sleep in small subgroups of four, at the top of bamboo plants. They will often use a dense bamboo plant, or a combination of several bamboo plants that weave together to make a sufficient foundation for sleep. The golden monkey will often feed near the sleeping area and return to this same sleeping location day after day.

Even though the name suggests a dark beach, you won’t see much in the way of blackness. Black Rock Sands is an open, wide beach with fine sands. The name comes from the area to the west of the beach dominated by a large, multi-coloured headland rock, low-tide caves and rock pools, an area rich in marine life. Natural history is also a feature of the local sand dunes, which have been declared a ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’. Unusually, you can drive onto the beach here – so it’s a popular spot not just for picnickers and sandcastle builders, but also for motor boats and water bikes which have a special zone designated for their use. There are also dog restrictions on the beach.

- www.portogallo.info/porto-norte/valle-del-douro/In Explore

The Golden Tanager (Tangara arthus) is endemic to South America. As the name suggests, it is a brilliant golden yellow color. The details of the coloration vary geographically, and no fewer than nine subspecies are recognized. On the throat and underparts, the coloration ranges from chestnut to golden yellow. The Golden Tanager eats a combination of fruit and insects, and hops along mossy branches in search of the latter. They travel in mixed species flocks, usually accompanied by up several other individuals. The Golden Tanager occurs in humid montane forests from Venezuela south to Bolivia. It also occurs at forest borders, but is a predominantly forest dwelling bird. The IUCN assesses the conservation status of the Golden Tanager as of Least Concern. doi.org/10.2173/bow.goltan1.01

As the sun moves across the autumn sky the flowering maple also known around here as Chinese Lantern or Chinese Hat is full of beautiful flowers. As suggested, my hummingbird visitors seem to really enjoying the nectar. That is as long as my camera is in the house. When the camera is with me the maple might get a butterfly to visit but the hummers stay out of image range, high in the oak trees while they wait for me to put the camera down.

I caratteristici retoni da pesca che si trovano sulla foce del fiume Arno creano un suggestivo spettacolo, specialmente nei freddi tramonti d'inverno. The characteristic huge fishing nets (the so-called "retoni") that can be found at the mouth of the Arno river create a suggestive scenario, especially in the cold winter months. There are times when things just work together even when circumstances doesn't suggest it when you first start out. I decided to visit Furresø north of Copenhagen to try and capture water/landscape shots although the light was flat as a pancake when I left home. When I got there I found out that there was a light mist over the water and the sun was slowly making its way through the clouds. There was very little wind so the water on the lake was relatively calm which created a very serene feeling, which I have tried my best to grab.

The trees just stood there in some sort of majesty next to the lake and I had to get that on camera.

Because of the little wind and the comfortable temperature I had a really nice day out, helping me to unwind. I learned a lot about landscape photography as well, trying to remember and use the knowledge gained from the lessons from my recent masterclass from the Raw Room over at firstmanphotography.com. Excellent stuff!

I decided to publish both a colour and a black and white version of the shot because I couldn't decide which one I liked the most. There's a little more to come from this session but I haven't had time to post process it yet.

As its name suggests, Yellow star-of-Bethlehem is a golden-yellow, star-like flower that can be found growing in woodland on basic soils. Although it is rare, it can be very abundant where it does occur. It grows from a bulb, which waits dormant underground until spring.

Captured in the mountains of Costa Rica in 2016. These birds literally (as suggested by their common name) pierce the base of flowers with their hooked beaks and suck the nectar out for nourishment. I can imagine the hummingbirds saying to each other "We have to instigate a distraction and then swoop in to get the nectar first:"!

ABOUT THE HISTORY OF VENICE CARNIVAL:

It is said that the Carnival of Venice was started from a victory of the "Serenissima Repubblica" against the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrico di Treven in the year 1162. In the honor of this victory, the people started to dance and make reunions in San Marco Square. Apparently, this festival started on that period and became official in the Renaissance. In the seventeenth century, the baroque carnival was a way to save the prestigious image of Venice in the world. It was very famous during the eighteenth century. It encouraged licence and pleasure, but it was also used to protect Venetians against the anguish for present time and future. However, under the rule of the King of Austria, the festival was outlawed entirely in 1797 and the use of masks became strictly forbidden. It reappeared gradually in the nineteenth century, but only for short periods and above all for private feasts, where it became an occasion for artistic creations.

After a long absence, the Carnival returned to operate in 1979. The Italian government decided to bring back the history and culture of Venice, and sought to use the traditional Carnival as the centerpiece of its efforts. The redevelopment of the masks began as the pursuit of some Venetian college students for the tourist trade. Today, approximately 3 million visitors come to Venice every year for Carnival. One of the most important events is the contest for la maschera più bella ("the most beautiful mask") placed at the last weekend of the Carnival and juried by a panel of international costume and fashion designers.

Ortalis columbiana (Colombian Chacalaca / Guacharaca)

Endemic to Colombia, as its name would suggest, and the only chachalaca within its now relatively limited range in the central (Cauca and Magdalena) valleys of the country. It is found in both humid and deciduous forests, but the species’ range and population are both almost certainly declining, and it survives only in pockets.

As the name suggests, the Marsh Harrier lives in wetland habitats. They are a success story now after being extinct in Britain in the 19th Century. Since the first pairs bred in 1971 in Suffolk they have increased very well indeed, as has the wetland management on which they depend. It is now a regular sight to see these wonderful large harriers hunting over our marshes. I photographed this one locally, something that I would not have thought possible only 30 years ago.

Mount Santubong's name may have been derived from the Iban word for coffin, but various Chinese derivations have also been suggested (San approximating the word for mountain in many dialects), as well Bidayuh, in whose lands the names of many hills start with S. Investigators have made ascents of the steep mountain to find places of archaeological interest. Around its foot are signs of Hindu occupation which are hundreds of years old which have been investigated by the Sarawak Museum. It was also the home of the early Sarawak Malays until they were driven up to Kuching in about the 1850s owing to continual attacks from the powerful Saribas Dayaks.[citation needed]

The mountain is made of sandstone, although it has been confused by many with limestone tower karst, or a volcanic plug: smaller versions of both appear not far inland. For a long time it interested those in search of gold but without success. There used to be an old theory that all the gold in the First Division of Sarawak lies in a straight line between Bau and Santubong which has some support in that there is a certain amount of gold in the mountain since fishermen in the past used to depend for their livelihood during the monsoon seasons, when the sea was too rough for fishing, by panning gold in the small mountain streams from which they could expect to gain an average of twenty dollars a month.

In this picture you get to see all the "4 iconic Santubongs" of Sarawak.

1. The mountain - Mt Santubong

2. The village - Santubong by the mountain.

3. The river - Santubong River @ Sungai Santubong

4. The famous Santubong Bridge.

If you are driving into Tarragona its always worth stopping to look at this most beautiful piece of historical architecture. The Pont de les Ferreres also known as Pont del Diable (Devil’s Bridge) is a Roman bridge, on the outskirts of Tarragona , in Catalonia, Spain. The aqueduct was added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 2000.

Description from Wiki

The Tárraco aqueduct took water from the Francolí river, 15 kilometers north of Tarragona. It probably dates from the time of Augustus. The Pont de les Ferreres is composed of two levels of arches: the upper section has 25 arches, and the lower one has 11. All arches have the same diameter of 20 Roman feet. It has a maximum height of 89 ft and a length of 817 ft, including the ends where the specus (water channel) runs atop a wall.
