Virga - where an observable shaft of precipitation falling from a cloud evaporates or sublimates before reaching the ground. Photo taken June 21, 2020
Pays de Saint-Flour.
Au petit matin, les cristaux de glace de la gelée blanche qui s'est formée par sublimation de la vapeur d'eau contenue dans l'air froid, fondent progressivement aux premiers rayons du soleil.
18-march-2021: Trieste Gulf, FVG, Italia.
The snow Virga, descending, on the whole shot, from the cloud above, in random order, tormented, curled, weakened, up to about 500m of altitude, sublimates for the whole path and totally at that altitude.
The central one, on the contrary, more dense and lower, manages to sublimate only partly, while the other part liquefies in rain (which has a completely different density, clearly highlighting the passage in which the water lets the sunlight pass almost completely), however weakened by the continuation of factors (attenuated by Sea humidity!) that led to sublimation in the form, now, of evaporation, but the space between the entrainment of the large virga (which appears as an elongation of the cloud, but is not) and the sea surface is too short, thanks also to the absence of winds and, in fact, to a greater humidity in the air.
EN: Well, i think i'm back? I lost my hand to make picture but, not too bad!
FR: Eh bien, je crois que je suis de retour? J'ai perdu la main pour faire des photos mais, c'est pas mal!
Another from the day out on Helvellyn, taken as the sun dropped below the ridge line of the Central Fells and shone through the mist in the valley and trees of the Swirls plantation. Cropped from the original in an attempt to simplify and distil the image.

simple sublimated circle
golden, molten ring,
spread across black satin,
across the limitless dome of the night.
the moon sang,
the stars twinkled,
the darkness embraced them,
lingering, still.

"...La sublimation n'est pas toujours la négation d'un désir ; elle ne se présente pas toujours comme une sublimation contre des instincts. Elle peut être une sublimation pour un idéal."

Ice fog doesn't happen very often around here anymore, because we don't often get cold enough (-40 or colder) for it to form.
Ice fog is different from freezing fog, in that freezing fog is made of supercooled liquid droplets, that freeze on contact with surfaces. Often this makes for very beautifully frost-gilded trees and bushes.
Ice fog's droplets are already frozen, moisture sublimating directly in the air, in very cold air, and generally happens only in the Arctic and other very cold regions.

A movie crew was cleaning up in the park as I was walking by one of the ponds in Central Park. I noticed something odd, it was pure white and looked like a fungi or slime mould. I took a few pictures and then picked up a leaf to touch it. I realized it was in fact dry ice, so with the leaf I picked up a few pieces and placed them in the pond.
