This week in 1991, space shuttle Atlantis, mission STS-43, landed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center following a successful eight-day mission. The primary payload, the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite-5, above, was attached to an Inertial Upper Stage and deployed about six hours into flight. The Inertial Upper Stage propelled the satellite into a geosynchronous orbit. The satellite became the fourth member of the orbiting Tracking and Data Relay Satellite series, which provides and maintains improved tracking and data acquisition services to spacecraft in low-Earth orbit. The Space Shuttle Atlantis streaks skyward as sunlight pierces through the gap between the orbiter and ET assembly. Atlantis lifted off on the 42nd space shuttle flight at 11:02 a.m. EDT on August 2, 1991 carrying a crew of five and TDRS-E. A remote camera at the 275-foot level of the Fixed Surface Structure took this picture.

Audley End reflects and illustrates aspects of major events in English history. It was built by one of the leading courtiers of James I’s reign, became one of Charles II’s palaces, and has been shaped by architects and designers of the first rank.
During the Second World War, in 1942–4, Audley End was the headquarters of the Polish Section of the Special Operations Executive. Soldiers who volunteered to join the Polish underground movement were trained here before being dropped into their occupied home country.
