On the evening of December 1, the moon, Venus, and Jupiter all appeared close together in the sky. I was looking forward to seeing this planetary conjunction, as it was not to happen again for 44 years.
Unfortunately, it was cloudy along the coast.
Fortunately, I was wandering about the evening before, trying to compose an interesting juxtaposition of land and celestial objects. I took this photo on November 30, near the Pacifica Pier. The 90 second exposure clearly shows the movement of the turning earth in relation to the planets and moon.
I thought about blending in a shorter exposure to make the planets and moon appear more like they did to the naked eye, but then the smoothness of the water (that's the rough Pacific Ocean) would not make sense. It's a nice play on what's really moving here.
Although not as visually exciting as a bunch of surfers , the concept here is certainly more cosmic.

I had assumed that I would need to purchase a replacement video card, but the more I thought about it I figured this was a software problem, not a hardware failure. I posted the question on the Apple support forum.

and some very generous souls led me down this path:
Apple > System Preferences > Universal Access > Display: Enhance Contrast
The slider was about 20% to the right. Doh!
I must have typed some strange keyboard combination while using some other program.
I loved the cost of this fix. Now I have to go back and fix a few of my photos. And, all your photos are looking much better! Sorry if I told you your pictures stink! It was my monitor settings! :)
Maybe this note can save someone else some trouble.
