Dolgwm Stores (old hardware shop) in Llanybydder. Sadly a Grade II Listed Building, due to it being a "former C19 market building, retaining definite architectural character in a prominent position near the centre of the town." A little history below taken from the british listed building website.

Built in the third quarter of the C19 as a market hall and shown on the 1891 Ordnance Survey. It was originally open-fronted in the lower storey. In the late C19 it was converted to shops when a bay window was added to the L side, probably for a grocery. The R-hand bay at some time became a butcher''s shop, as it has a typical sash window and marble sill of the late C19. The rear was said to have housed a cobbler''s shop. The second edition of the Ordnance Survey, of 1905, describes the building as the Town Hall, which probably refers to the use of the upper storey. This is said to have subsequently contained snooker tables, when it was used as a workmen''s institute.

For around one hundred and fifty years Long Eaton, Derbyshire was a major lace manufacturing centre and Harrington Mill was the largest of the lace mills in the town. It is still standing and now used by other businesses and is seen here on the 12th February 2019.

In 1885 local building contractor Poxon and Rice won the tender for the building of the first phase of the Harrington Mills in Leopold Street, Long Eaton. It opened for business in January 1887 with the second phase of the building completed by Wheatley and Maule in 1888. The large mill was 550 feet long and four stores high, containing over one million bricks. The semi circular turrets along one side housed the staircases to the landings of the various lace manufacturers who occupied the building. At its peak Harrington Mill contained standings for 255 lace machines and was the largest of all the tenement mills in Long Eaton. The standings were rented out, allowing smaller enterprises to flourish and at one point Harrington Mill housed 26 separate lace manufacturing companies.

Sally's Cove is believed to be named after Sally Short who along with her children, were shipwrecked here while leaving her husband and took shelter in the cove.

One of the area's first settlers was Richard Gilley. Most settlers came from Woody Point and probably fished in the area for years before deciding to stay. The first census was taken in 1884, with a population of 9. By 1891, it had grown to 30 and by 1901; ten years later it was 59. In 1954 a road was built to the community.

When Gros Morne National Park was established, Sally's Cove was designated by Parks Canada to be resettled. By 1976, the population had declined from 430 to 188 and by 1981 to 100. Some residents refused to move, even though there were official restrictions on building and selling and inheriting homes. By the late 1980's these restrictions were removed and Sally's Cove became a park enclave community.

Community and business services in Sally's Cove are extremely limited. These businesses provide food and adventure tourism services. A number of fishing enterprises work out of Sally's Cove and their fishing stores/sheds are located along the community's shoreline/beach.

Sally's Cove is an enclave situated in the center of Gros Morne National Park. Tourist and residents can enjoy a large number of park recreational activities and programs. It is a community well known for its lobster and cod fishing. While residents depend on the nearby towns of Rocky Harbour and Norris Point for education, recreation, and social facilities, there is a community center where local socials can be held.

The beaches of Sally's Cove are very popular with tourists, especially those interested in photography. The community is just a ten minute drive from the scenic Western Brook Fjords, hiking trails, boat tour and rest area.

The Kent block is attached to its companion apartment building on Court St. by walkways with metal railings. Records indicate that this apartment building may have been built several years later than the actual Kent Block, although not later

than 1900. Although the front facade of the apartment block is faced with red brick like that of the Kent Block, the side walls are constructed of cream brick. There is a pressed metal cornice at the top of the building that features brackets, modillions, dentils, and swags. A brick corbelled frieze runs under the cornice. Two sets of two-story oriel bays decorate the upper stories. They are covered by pressed metal in a manner similar to those of the Kent Block. Windows are single light double hung sashes except for those between the bays. There are two round arched windows there that are decorated with segmentally arched lintels and stone sills. A stone belt course runs across the front facade of the building separating the first and upper floors. The first floor features simple entrances and windows.

Both the Kent Block and its companion apartment building housed many flats. The flats of the commercial block were called the LaVista Flats, while those on Court St. were known as the Court Street Flats. The businesses housed in first floor of the Kent Block itself included grocery stores until 1911 and the Janesville Floral Company until 1924 when they presumably moved to their new quarters south of this building. The building currently houses apartments and an office supply store.

Not a beautiful or scenic shot this time - just a little personal family history and a look at the changing face of small business.

The corner store on the right once bore the name "Harry's Deli" way back in 1981. I was a young 21 year old and had just found myself in a little bother with employment, and so the family came over from interstate and bought this corner store and named it in my honour! It was called a deli here in South Australia, which is another term for the more widely used "milk bar" around the rest of the country. We sold a wide range of the usual suspects like fresh bread and milk, cool drinks, bakery items, cigarettes (big seller in those days) sweets or lollies, chocolate, ice-creams, newspapers and a small range of basic grocery items. We did a roaring trade!

The corner shop on the left of image was an identical deli! If anything, they were busier than us as they also had a lotto agency. These two business thrived, largely due to a great position at the end of a suburban railway line (literally across the road from us) and being just one block back from the Grange jetty and beach. We both traded 365 days a year and were open from 6-30am right through until 10pm.

This shot was taken 11 years ago, some 30 years after we sold and shows how the corner store style deli or milk bar has become a thing of the past. The left one is now a hair salon (still is as far as I know) and Harry's Deli is now a good little cafe / bakery. It still operates as a bakery under a new name now. But the traditional corner store / milk bar / deli is long gone. I think the change started with the gradual increase in the number of service stations or petrol stations slowly adding convenience stores to their businesses which gradually took business away from the little milk bars and delis.

It was great to be a part of it though. It was fun working in that little business. It was also bad for the waistline though. The mixed lolly section was within easy reach and far too many were sampled under the guise of quality control.

Sadly the long hours took a toll on us and the family sold after a busy 18 months, and all moved on to other busy pursuits, with my good self becoming a long distance bus driver for Greyhound here in Australia.

Thanks for reading my little story about a busy little part of my early adult life.
