The stocks were probably erected by the local Barmote Court, which ruled the lead mining industry, for the punishment of offending miners who committed relatively minor offences. They were restored in 1951 to mark the Festival of Britain.

Stocks
Another beautiful, bright, winter's morning and another visit to Berkswell village stores. Today I took the opportunity to photograph the village stocks on the green. It was a bit muddy underfoot, but worth it to get the shot. I love the shadows cast by the tree and the posts, but I wouldn't fancy being locked up in the stocks much. It's a good job I've lead such a blameless life!

The Stocks Café next to the old stocks in Chapel en le Frith, has this piece of sculpture above the window. It is a market scene, relating specifically to the locality and I assume that P Pheasey and C A Wilford were the artists involved in making it but have been unable to learn anything about them. It is dated 1980. If someone can enlighten me further I would be very pleased.
