Wryneck - Jynx Torquilla

The wrynecks (genus Jynx) are a small but distinctive group of small Old World woodpeckers. Jynx is from the Ancient Greek iunx, the Eurasian wryneck.
Like the true woodpeckers, wrynecks have large heads, long tongues which they use to extract their insect prey and zygodactyl feet, with two toes pointing forward, and two backwards. However, they lack the stiff tail feathers that the true woodpeckers use when climbing trees, so they are more likely than their relatives to perch on a branch rather than an upright trunk.
Their bills are shorter and less dagger-like than in the true woodpeckers, but their chief prey are ants and other insects, which they find in decaying wood or almost bare soil. They re-use woodpecker holes for nesting, rather than making their own holes. The eggs are white, as with many hole nesters.
The two species have cryptic plumage, with intricate patterning of greys and browns. The adult moults rapidly between July and September, although some moult continues in its winter quarters. The voice is a nasal woodpecker-like call.
These birds get their English name from their ability to turn their heads almost 180 degrees. When disturbed at the nest, they use this snake-like head twisting and hissing as a threat display.

Worth the early start and the stiff climb up the hill. Good to see many familiar faces today.

La statua è stata posizionata in modo che lo sguardo di Garibaldi sia rivolto verso sua città natale, Nizza, ed è stata inaugurata nel 1927 dal nipote del grande condottiero. Questa posizione è una particolarità perchè la quasi totalità delle statue raffiguranti Garibaldi ho lo sguardo puntato verso la città di Roma, alla cui liberazione il condottiero ha dedicato la sua vita.

Le premier phare construit sur l'île...Un des plus vieux phares en France encore en fonctionnement, le phare du Stiff a été construit sur le point culminant de l’île (60 m). Suite à une visite en août 1685, Vauban propose la construction d’une tour défensive qui signalerait les dangers dans le Nord-Ouest de Brest.
Construit en 1695 et allumé en 1700, il a d’abord fonctionné au charbon, puis en 1889 au pétrole. Au début du XXème siècle, il est doté d’un nouvel appareil optique.
Sa hauteur est de 33 m environ (90 m par rapport au niveau de la mer). Aujourd’hui, il est automatisé et télécontrôlé à partir du Créac’h. Il se symbolise par 2 éclats rouges toutes les 20 secondes. Sa portée est de 24 milles.

For most of the day before my backlit contrast shot coming into Duluth the 409 was lit exceedingly well. Steaming ore mixed with cold temps and a stiff breeze has the train creating it's own snow as it wheels through Saginaw
60087 at Gowdall on 6M36, the 09.54 Drax - Liverpool. Not what I went for as unfortunately the stiff breeze prevented a vertical pile of clag from Drax. 17 January 2022.
I'm no Ornithologist (far from it) but I thought a Fulmer was a variation of Gull
Go to the bottom of the class., wrong!
With their stiff wings and that amazing 'tube' like nose they are in fact related to the Albatross!
That's the really enormous (sometime bigger than an eagle) seabird but are not now found in the Northern Atlantic
Apparently fossil remains indicate Albatrosses were once up 'our way' (the Northern Atlantic) but all that remains today are their 'off-shoots' like this beautiful Fulmar
So I suppose you could call him our 'mini Albatross'
That's what I'd have if lived in that house below Blaven. I find that hill irresistible, I'd be looking up at it all day ;)
